To reiterate: I apologize if the video is not to your tastes, but I found it personally delightful. It is also connected to the world of Bond.

That's because, @Richardo, we don't want to learn about you touching yourself or whatever.
Excuse me? My comment said nothing of the sort.

You're right. I apologise. It was this:

I think you forgot that the mod team got rid of "Mr. Divinyls" :))

Whether or not Richardo becomes a rare Octopussy-like species appears to be very much up in the air.

That is common parlance. What of posts such as these that commit the same offense?

    Common Parlance? Moron.

He has a fair point. Just ask Alan Pardew.

It seems Richardo might be a slightly more intelligent class of troll to what we are used to.

Perhaps we could veer the discussion towards Calvin and stop the trolling AND insulting? Take it to another thread or, much preferrably, PMs, please.

I prefer Calvin over Haphazard. Calvin's Fleming knowledge might not be as vast but he doesn't turn into a snarky film snob.

One of my favourite reviews of his is the one for the 1967 Casino Royale

Love it. This has been the basis of the "too hysterical" argument from many people but I couldn't help but find myself loving every second of it. Perhaps it's because this was actually the review of his that I watched last overall, so I was used to him in much, much less potent doses by that point?

The "hysterical" aspect is most appropriate for an insane film like this.

OMG He's shirtless! and a nose like George Lazenby in 69. Count me up as a fan now.

Just a notice that Calvin has put up a new vid. His "Worst Bond Moments".

The choice for number 1 may surprise you.

I just watched it, I was also surprised but he explained very well his choice for number 1.

I wasn't surprised by his number 1. For the same reasons, I hate that scene too.

He does blame John Barry though for the lyrics to TMWTGG when of course they were written by Don Black.

I just watched it this morning, so it is great to see you guys and gals discussing it here already. I agreed with a lot of his choices; more than I thought I would.

@WillyGalore, I think he blamed Barry for the inclusion of the slide whistle in that scene, and not the actual lyrics to the opening song of the film, but I could have interpreted his words incorrectly.

My main issues with the films lay in sections of the franchse and not particular moments per se. I think DAF is a big slap in the face to fans after the landmark events of OHMSS that are left completely unfulfilled, and I have never been one for the Moore era's brand of camp, where the tension is often ruined by a badly timed one-liner or scene included for comedic affect that ruins any sense of danger present up to that point. In addition, Bond is also a celebrity figure, seemingly known by everyone and their proverbial dog, and goes about his missions a bit too overtly for a secret agent conducting clandestine business. While I find the films enjoyable to an extent, their departure from the great mood of the early 60s films and that of OHMSS are a bit disappointing, and I can therefore never hold them to the level of films like DN, FRWL, TB, TLD, LTK, CR, QoS, or Skyfall which all grasped the true essence of Bond as a character, and made him interesting to study like never before.
  • I just watched a whole bunch of videos thanks to that, good work @MrBond. His Nightfire review was great; I can't wait until he does EoN.

He says "This must have been a very lazy time for John Barry. The lyrics to the title song aren't oozing with intelligence"

I've just watched his review for Nightfire. For some reason, I didn't think he'd be a such a fan of it. I can't disagree with anything he says, despite the similarities to Moonraker, Nightfire is my favourite Bond as well.

It's odd that, despite being incredibly over the top by film standards, the video games are so beloved. I guess it's just that different rules apply when you have to constantly be shooting things.

Well when it comes to the games I think they need to be over the top to increase the wow and fun factor. I don't think a game where Bond goes around playing detective would work too well. It would be like a point and click adventure game like the New Back To The Future game.

  • Mr Dyson is a shy chap, not posting here.

Anyway, I'm sure he reads this thread so I'll point out something I've been meaning to, his crits of the score of GF which he says can be a bit wearing. Just point out, this is probably a digital thing, where the sound looses texture and feeling. It may actually be better to watch GF on tape, would you believe, to avoid that and get the full oompf of it. All that DVD/Blu-Ray remastering only goes so far when the sound suffers (and on the pts of TSWLM, the Bond 77 theme has the hi-hat too loud, it's annoying and distracting). Same with the Beatles' stuff, really original vinyl makes it sound great esp The White Album, before you even get to the whole mono v stereo argument.

It seems Calvin is becoming famous. According to his Facebook he was recognised on the tube by a fellow fan who shook his hand.

Hate him. His opinions on certain films are laughable and his hysterical, OTT style is incredibly annoying.

"Hate" is a rather strong word.
