I remember on the old forum, someone (maybe it was @Nid?) drafted a set of fascinating guidelines for this. I cannot remember all of them, but here's an example or the sort of rule he suggested:

Due to legal difficulties, you may not release an adaptation of Thunderball before 1964. You must work with Kevin McClory. If you do not work with Kevin McClory to adapt Thunderball by 1969, he will create his own version starring Lawrence Harvey as 007. Whether you work with him or not, he will make Never Say Never Again, a remake of Thunderball, in 1983 starring whomever you cast as your first James Bond (assuming he is not still in the role).

Nobody has to play by these rules, of course, but I thought @Nid—or the person I might be confusing him with—had a brilliant idea; guidelines (admittedly simplified from reality) to really put you in EON's shoes. The author had written some rules regarding Casino Royale, as well, but I can't recall them just now. Anyone want to scour their copy of The Battle For Bond and posit some? Or am I just raining on the fantasy Bond franchise parade?
  • I remember I once came up with something like this (not too many changes):

    Connery era:
    1962 - Dr. No (Young)
1963 - From Russia with Love (Young)
    1964 - Goldfinger (Hamilton)
    1965 - Thunderball (Young)
1967 - On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Young)
1969 - You Only Live Twice (Hunt)
1971 - The Man with the Golden Gun (Hunt)

    Moore era:
1973 - Live and Let Die (Hamilton)
1974 - Diamonds are Forever (Hamilton)
1977 - The Spy Who Loved Me (Gilbert)
    1979 - Moonraker (Gilbert)
1981 - For Your Eyes Only (Glen)
    1983 - Octopussy (Glen)

    Dalton era:
    1985 - A View to a Kill (Glen)
1987 - The Living Daylights (Glen)
1990 - Licence to Kill (Glen)
    1994 - GoldenEye (Campbell)
1997 - Tomorrow Never Dies (Spotiswoode)
1999 - The World is Not Enough (?)
    2002 - Die Another Day (?)

    Craig era:
    2005 - Casino Royale (Campbell)
2007 - Quantum of Solace (Forster)
    2009 - Risico (Campbell)
    2012 - Property of a Lady (Mendes)
    ...

Well, mine is at least possible, uninspired though it may be. All this above me, as nice as it sounds, it a total pipe dream. You people are smoking crack... X_X

So, everything the same except Laz does DAF, Dalton does his '91/'92 proposed film, whatever it was going to be called and that's it. One more for Laz and one more for Dalts. Simple and possible.
  • Just a simple list, no details.

    Sean Connery

1963 - From Russia With Love

    Sean Connery: 1962 - 1967

    1962: Dr. No
    1963: From Russia with Love
    1964: Goldfinger
1965: Moonraker - with being faithful to the novel.
    1967: Thunderball

    George Lazenby: 1969 - 1973

1969: On Her Majesty's Secret Service
1971: You Only Live Twice - with being faithful to the novel.
1973: The Man with the Golden Gun - with being faithful to the novel.

    Roger Moore: 1975 - 1979

    Timothy Dalton: 1981 - 1989

    1981: For Your Eyes Only
1983: The Property of a Lady - Since Octopussy is pretty much an adaptation of this short story.
1985: Diamonds are Forever - with being faithful to the novel.
    1987: The Living Daylights
1989: A View to a Kill - This film would be a combination of The Hildebrand Rarity and From a View to a Kill short stories. Bond investigating the murder of a motorcycle dispatch-rider, and the theft of his top-secret documents which Milton Krest is behind.

    Pierce Brosnan: 1995 - 2002

I will just post the ones that are different from what we actually got- just to keep my post relatively short :)
There are 3 scenarios I’d be interested in seeing…

    My favorite- Scenario 1
    1. Diamonds Are Forever (1971-George Lazenby) - Well, duh. I hate having the movies go from Connery to Lazenby to Connery again (and Connery ‘going through the motions’ against his wife’s killer adds fuel to the fire of that infamous BS theory that James Bond is a ‘code name’- and is a different actual person)

    2. A View to a Kill (1985- Timothy Dalton) – I feel the series would have been better if Moore quit after FYEO like he intended- only to be lured back for the Battle of the Bonds in 1983- THEN quit for real! lol

    3. GoldenEye (1995- Timothy Dalton)- This movie was MADE for him. Just look at how different GoldenEye is from Tomorrow Never Dies (TND even perfectly sets up a ‘new Bond’ in the PTS- i.e. not showing his face right away)

    4. Never Say Never Again (1983-George Lazenby)- I heard they had actually asked him before Connery expressed interest- damnit, this would have been much better- Lazenby was only 44 years old in 1983- as opposed to Connery at 53 (and somehow looked much older than Moore)

    Scenario 2
But if I could see it both ways, here’s my other idea…
Lazenby signs the Contract and becomes the Best Bond ever as the producers predicted!

    1. Diamonds Are Forever (1971-George Lazenby)

    2. Live and Let Die (1973-George Lazenby)

    3. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974-George Lazenby)- just think about how cool that martial arts school scene COULD have been…

    4. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977-George Lazenby)

    5. Moonraker (1979-George Lazenby)

    6. For Your Eyes Only (1981-George Lazenby)

    7. Octopussy (1983- Timothy Dalton) Seven films is a lot for ANY actor- time to welcome a younger fresh Timothy Dalton!

    8. A View to a Kill (1985- Timothy Dalton)

    9. GoldenEye (1995- Timothy Dalton) (I always prefer this- in any scenario)

Or on the other hand- Keep Lazenby for Octopussy to go up against Connery’s Never Say Never Again! How cool would THAT have been???

    Scenario 3
Finally- perhaps the most unpopular opinion…. but if done right…
    1. The Living Daylights (1987-Roger Moore)- Sure, he would have been pushing 59 by this point, but if he ‘played his age’, like Connery did in NSNA, it could have worked- and Roger Moore facing off against Gogol instead Gen. Pushkin (since they had so much history in the older films) would have been great to see

Quoting JobeGDG: Due to legal difficulties, you may not release an adaptation of Thunderball before 1964. You must work with Kevin McClory. If you do not work with Kevin McClory to adapt Thunderball by 1969, he will create his own version starring Lawrence Harvey as 007. Whether you work him or not, he will make Never Say Never Again, a remake of Thunderball, in 1983 starring whomever you cast as your first James Bond (assuming he is not still in the role).

The author had written some regarding Casino Royale, as well, but I can't recall them just now.
I think it was something along the lines that you can opt to film CR as your first movie, or agree to co-produce it in 1967. If not you'll face a rival production of CR starring Richard Burton sometime around 1965-67 and won't have the rights to it until 2000.

I was thinking of this the other day - my Connery era matches royale65's. It's a travesty that Moonraker wasn't given a faithful adaptation in the 60s. Still to work out the rest though...

Second post in a row in this thread, but I thought I'd have a bit of fun. This is an alternate timeline using the actual chronology of the films, but without using any of the actors who have actually played Bond. Of course, a few of the films would be re-written to better suit the actors and change the bits we all know need changing; i.e. DAD after the scene with Raoul in Cuba...

Maintain the series as is with these exceptions. This is only my major differences.

DAF – Completely different plot based on revenge for Tracy. Make it much darker and have Bond kill Bloefeld once and for all. Also replace Connery with Lazenby.

TMWTTG – Once again make it a darker film with less campiness and more focus on plot.

MR – Give me something more grounded and original.

AVTAK – Dalton takes over with a completely different plot.

These are my few main differences I would make, the biggest of which would be DAF.

    Fassbender 1 - 2014
    Fassbender 2 - 2016
    Fassbender 3 - 2018
    Fassbender 4 - 2020

    7 actors, 32 films, 60 years.
  • While not my own ultimate timeline, an attempt at what might be a Fleming purist's ultimate timeline, with an effort to get in maximum films. Given, such a scenario could have resulted in the loss of certain, widely recognized aspects of the films as we know them (hollowed-out volcanoes, space battles, etc.), and I honestly don't think the series could have survived the way it has without the drastic changes in tone/attitude/character that it's seen, but here goes. (And just for the record, more than a small portion of this was inspired by some of what I read on the old MI6 thread (e.g., dark, 50s/60s-era Bond films and "a-Bond-a-decade"). Also, apologies: it's long, detailed, and more like an alternate history than an alternate timeline (if that makes sense), but hopefully it shows a halfway-decent alternate take on things.)

    James Mason:
    Casino Royale (1954)
    Live and Let Die (1955)
    Moonraker (1956)
    Diamonds Are Forever (1957)
    From Russia, with Love (1959)

Unlikely a full-blown series would've kicked off this early, but CR DID get adapted that year in real life, so what the heck. Gritty, realistic, and filmed as closely to the novels as possible (making obvious, slight exceptions for "carpet-beating" and racism so as not to tick off the censors). Unlike in real life, SMERSH can be used in the films. The series is greeted well, but comes to a cliff-hanger at the end of the decade as a kick from a shoe leaves Bond's life hanging in the balance....

    Sean Connery:
    Dr. No (1962)
    Goldfinger (1963)
    Thunderball (1964)
The Spy Who Loved Me (1965)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1965)
    You Only Live Twice (1967)
The Man with the Golden Gun (1969)

After a three-year break, Connery takes the wheel in a debut similar to the one we know today. Fleming-faithful yet cinematic versions of the next two adventures are produced in the next couple of years. TSWLM is put into theaters with reminders to "See On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the groundbreaking new film in the epic James Bond series, this Christmas!" (In spite of Fleming's apprehensions, an agreement has been struck that TSWLM can be filmed if only as a practical "extended advertisement". A small group of EON members (VivMic, Inc.) is assembled to film the picture, with Connery only requiring a brief time to film his parts, not including a possible SPECTRE-hunting scene.) Connery shows Bond's human side and remains sufficiently fit and un-bored-looking for the next two films to round out Fleming's story line, punctuating the end of the era, the decade, and adaptations of the novels with a seemingly unbeatably high point.

Roger Moore (or, if you prefer, George Lazenby):
    From a View to a Kill (1971) (TSWLM 77's girl/AVTAK's villain)
For Your Eyes Only (1973) (chase/survival picture between Bond and Judy Havelock)
Quantum of Solace (1975) (villain's plot being a crime of passion)
    Risico (1977) (mostly FYEO '81)
The Hildebrand Rarity (1979) (large-scale finale for the era)

Rip-roaring blockbusters while Moore is still young. The source material is clung to, even for QOS. These aren't as dark as earlier entries, but nor are they as goofy as some of the real 70s outings. Moore/Lazenby ends on a high.

    Timothy Dalton:
    Octopussy (1981) (detective Bond)
The Property of a Lady (1983) (OP '83, less slapstick)
The Living Daylights (1985) (essentially TLD '87)
007 in New York (1986) (short budget, short timetable, rave reviews)
The Enemy of My Enemy (1987) (based on unused Fleming ideas and a saying he liked)
Licence to Kill (1989) (mostly the same)

Fresh blood, new adventures. A bit more serious than the '70s.

    Jason Isaacs:
Shamelady (1991) (Bond 17, no robots (as has been said))
Goldeneye (1993) (the best of the original script)
For Special Services (1995) (not the novel, but TMWTGG '74)
Tomorrow Never Lies (1997) (the best of the original script)
The World Is Not Enough (1999) (same, minus any unnecessary melodrama)

    Overall, stronger than Brosnan's films.

    James Purefoy:
Die Another Day (2002) (minus groan-worthiness and sci-fi aspects)
Final Assignment (2004) (based on the purported script)

Alas, he only gets two, but leaves on the thirtieth film and the fiftieth anniversary. While not everyone's favorite Bond, he does well.

    Michael Fassbender:
    The Secret Agent (2006)

Essentially, how Bond became an agent. But Fassbender shan't be forgotten....

    Daniel Craig:
Casino Royale (with a different name) (2007)
Quantum of Solace (with a different name) (2008)
    Bond 33 (2010)
    Bond 34 (2012)
    Bond 35 (2014)

Mostly the same as what we really got, with more continuity and more pacing/plot development in the latter (with no shaky-cam). His era goes on for three more films.

    Michael Fassbender:
    Bond 36 (2016)
    ...

    And all goes well, hopefully.

Again, it's one very unbelievable timeline (and one very drawn-out post), but with constant talk of "going back to the books," I figured I'd explore it.

Here is one of the timelines I've made. It's not the most realistic, or the best one I've done, but I like it. I would be interesting to see the movies in this timeline. I've added the directors to give an understanding of what each film would be like.

Sean Connery (First four are exactly like their real-life counterparts, the rest are very faithful adaptations as well.)
Dr. No (1962) Director: Terence Young
From Russia With Love (1963) Director: Terence Young
    Goldfinger (1964) Director: Guy Hamilton
    Thunderball (1965) Director: Terence Young
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1967) Director: Lewis Gilbert (No hollowed out mountain in the Swiss Alps. A well done adaptation.)
You Only Live Twice (1969) Director: Peter R. Hunt
The Man with the Golden Gun (1971) Director: Peter R. Hunt

George Lazenby (LALD, MR, DAF, CS all well done adaptations. FYEO, OP, AVTAK are basically the same, but much more serious, and no goofy humor.)
Live and Let Die (1973) Director: Peter R. Hunt
Moonraker (1975) Director: Peter R. Hunt
Diamonds Are Forever (1977) Director: Peter R. Hunt
Colonel Sun (1979) Director: Lewis Gilbert
For Your Eyes Only (1981) Director: John Glen
    Octopussy (1983) Director: John Glen
A View to a Kill (1985) Director: John Glen

Timothy Dalton (Continues the seriousness, but the Dalton era is more dark than the previous ones.)
The Living Daylights (1987) Director: John Glen (Basically the same as real life TLD)
License Revoked (1989) Director: John Glen (Exactly the same as LTK, but Leiter is not the reason for revenge.)
Icebreaker (1991) Director: Ted Kotcheff (Kotcheff was rumored for Bond 17, so why not?)
    GoldenEye (1995) Director: Martin Campbell
Tomorrow Never Lies (1997) Director: Michael Caton-Jones (Same reason as for Kotcheff. At least Caton-Jones didn't direct Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.)
For Special Services (1999) Director: Michael Apted (I like the idea of Bond fighting SPECTRE again before the final Bond film.)
Casino Royale (2002) Director: Martin Campbell

And the series ends with the first Bond novel. It seems fitting. Also the Bond actors all get long, healthy terms, allowing them to fully develop their interpretation of James Bond (I mean this mainly for Lazenby and Dalton, as they didn't exactly get the longest of terms in real life).

    Sean Connery:
    Dr.No (1962)
    From Russia With Love (1963)
    Goldfinger (1964)
    Thunderball (1965)
    You Only Live Twive (1967)

All the Connery films staying exactly the same. But possibly a more enthusiastic Connery for YOLT.

    George Lazenby:
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
    Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

OHMSS would be the same however DAF would be a Peter Hunt directed direct follow-up to OHMSS with Bond out for revenge.

    Roger Moore:
    Live and Let Die (1973)
The Man With The Golden Gun (1974)
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
    Moonraker (1979)
    For Your Eyes Only (1981)
    Octopussy (1983)

Just a few changes to Moore's performance in TMWTGG.

    Timothy Dalton:
    A View To A Kill (1985)
    The Living Daylights (1987)
    Licence To Kill (1989)
    Bond 17 (1992)

A more Daltonesque AVTAK and the planned Bond 17 described on this site. After 1992 the Bond series gets its much needed break. But 5 years instead of 6. After fullfilling his contract (3 films with an option of a 4th) Dalton decides to end his tenure as Bond and pass the torch to a younger actor.

    Sean Bean:
    Bond 18 (1997)
    Bond 19 (1999)
    Bond 20 (2002)

Bean would act as a more suitable bridge between Dalton and Craig. All 3 films would be completely different from TND, TWINE, and DAD. In 2003 Bean decides that 4 years is too long to wait for him. He respectfully bows out from the role.

    Daniel Craig:
    Casino Royale (2006)
    Quantum of Solace (2008)
    Skyfall (2012)
    Bond 24 (2014)
    Bond 25 (2016)

At first I didn't like the idea of a 4 year gap between QOS and SF but the building anticipation is worth it.

And Happy 500th post to me. :D

It definitely would have worked better for Brosnan's fourth outing. There would have been a six year gap if it was made in 2004, but Brosnan didn't look too old in DAD, so it wouldn't have mattered. Nikolai Diavolo would be much better than Gustav Graves, and Jaws would "tower" over Zao (pun intended). As for the action, EoN's would have been a far cry better than DAD's sloppy action scenes.

Brosnan would've been 51 in 2004 if EON had been made and his age was already staring to show in DAD. Besides if the film would be anything like the game it would've been really over-the-top. After DAD I'd had my fill of over-the-top Bonds. Sometimes a longer wait is a good thing. We needed the 4 years between DAD and CR.

Well, I would have liked DAD to be taken out altogether, and EoN replacing it.

    2016 - ?

If i had my way this is what it would be. Just my opinion i think it would be cool. This timeline would give us 7 more bond movies making Skyfall #30. All the bond actors would start a few years earlier making them all just a little younger.
