    Victoria Smurfit :-)) =))

Tough name to smurf any part in a movie.

Heh, imagine if that's the one cliche they keep. Bond can be blonde, he doesn't have to always win and get the girl, the structure can be turned on its head, but dammit, 40 is just too old for a Bond girl!

Just be glad it's not a Moore or a Brosnan movie (unless they decide to give Craig his Moonraker here).

I really hope we get proper actresses for Bond 24. The Craig era has done very well with casting it's female roles. Eva Green was a real talent and the prods were lucky to get her and the same goes for Kurylenko. Both the girls in Skyfall were so well cast and worked tremendously in the film. I hope they continue to cast people with talent and not just pretty faces.

My number 1 pick has to be Keira Knightley:

    ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net%2Fbe%2F5ab400fa1811e1baf122000a1d0930%2Ffile%2Finterview-keira-knightley-on-the-difficulties-of-playing-anna-karenina-and-having-a-little-fun-on-jack-ryan.jpg

There was a time where her acting skills were limited strictly to pouting but she has come in leaps and bounds in recent years and I'd love to see her in a Bond flick. She was amazing in Anna Karenina.

    Amy Adams:

    ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net%2F3d%2F28%2F8983ee3f4efbb73af9baf01c2dc6%2Famerican-hustle-amy-adams.jpg

She's probably the most versatile actress working today and could play any role a Bond film could offer. I for one hope she would be cast as more of a menace to Bond ala Xenia, Volpe.

    Rachel Weisz:

    daniel-craig-rachel-wiesz-golden-globes-2013-01132013-04-600x450.jpg

The idea of having Mrs Craig on screen with Bond is very exciting. The chemistry would be great whatever the role was. The pair aren't afraid to mix the personal and the professional as well havign worked together on screen and stage.

    Penelope Cruz:

    ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net%2F6b%2F73e2108a5711e1bcc4123138165f92%2Ffile%2FPenelope-Cruz-Covers-Vogue-June-2011-penelope-cruz-22090652-1222-863.jpg

There were rumours earlier this year and I really hope they are true. Cruz is very sexy (just watch Nine - woah) and is a great actress to boot. She's perfect.

    Marion Cotillard:

    ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net%2F50%2Fa1%2F7001ca944da9992d833f91615c25%2Fmarion-cotillard-sag-awards.jpg

She's a marvellous actress and has something very evocative and beguiling about her. She'd make a good nemesis for Bond.

    Rose Byrne:

    ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net%2Fe5%2Fd4ff00c22711e18df9123138165f92%2Ffile%2Frose-byrne.jpg

I still feel the perfect part for her would have been as Eve in SF, but she was rumoured for Vesper. Hopefully Bond could figure in her future.

    Olivia Wilde:

    ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net%2F1f%2F4c%2F33b72bb54fe4a4bf008cb74caad7%2Folivia-wilde.jpg

She's probably the most blockbuster friendly out of all my picks. She'd be a solid choice but not exactly the most exciting. She of course has worked with Craig before which would help and she was rumoured to be a finalist for Vesper.

    Margot Robbie:

    ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net%2F1b%2Fd2%2F01a8159e40258dae8c21ae733480%2Fwolf-of-wall-street-margot-robbie.jpg

She just came off working with Scorsese so she's really on top of things at the moment. It's likely that the next top for a pretty girl like her would be a Hollywood blockbuster - why not then Bond?

I think Natalie Dormer would be great, she is juuuuust the right age now. A capable actress, but still not too famous. Traditionally, Bond girls are played by either unknown or little know actresses. It was not quite the case during the Brosnan era, but it is what happend during the Craig era.

Margot Robbie will always be Donna Freeman to me.

Anyway, she has this new romcom coming out with Will Smith. Smith and Craig are the same age so, I doubt there'll be an age issue if she were cast as a Bond girl. We'll see though.

Rose Byrne be on my wishlist as Australian girl/visitor when there use unused Fleming material i like to see be filmed.

There be better pictures of Margot Robbie, she have bit the looks of Sharon Stone and Margaret Nolan (Dink in Goldfinger). Sharon stone looks on those pictures from November 2013 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2510728/Will-Smith-Margot-Robbie-picture-scandal-start-filming-Buenos-Aires.html

Stone be first choose for Elektra King, but if from the beginning it be clear Margot play the villian or not turn in to a villian or mabey extra woman it can be intresting. I see it work to see her with Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough or/and Felicity Jones. Of course also based on where there going to be. As said before with Dench leaving and disapointed Skyfall i don't mind to have 4 Bond girls in the movie.

The whole "bond girl" scenario to me is becoming a bit of a cliche and gimmick, does Bond really need a woman by his side throughout every movie ? I was really disappointed to read that Naomi Harris will have a bigger action oriented role in B24, another typical politically correct scenario..Gender Bending is really becoming the norm these days...Perhaps just once, can't we have a Bond film without a "Bond Girl" ? I'm all for a lightly done and well tasteful scene or two showcasing Bond's womanizing and taking a woman to bed, but why the need for a "bond girl" to help Bond on a mission ? The direction of the new moneypenny in my opinion is absolutely dreadful. Keep her in the office as Fleming intended, but no no, that can't be done in today's feminized emasculated culture....Casino Royale did it just fine, giving Eva Green a great role in which she was a central character to the plot, keeping her a well-kept feminine character without making her action oriented. The era of Daniel Craig making serious Bond films in my opinion is done with, Skyfall was the mark of the "going back to milked-out action films to make a quick buck for the kiddies". The "Pierce Brosnan Era" is officially back. Gone are the days of the somewhat serious CR/QoS style films, and back are the kiddy gadget unrealistic plot scenarios...The hefty paycheck Craig got for SF must have been too tempting, and sadly he has sold out..Perhaps when a more serious espionage film comes out and makes the next Bond film seem childish, we will once again see a CR style film, just as when the Bourne Series forced the greedy Barbara Brocolli to bring Bond back to basics in the spirit of Fleming...

What happened to this Daniel Craig...taken from CR's Wikipedia page

In May 2005, Daniel Craig announced that MGM and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli had assured him that he would get the role of Bond, and Matthew Vaughn told reporters that MGM offered him the opportunity to direct, but Eon Productions at that point had not approached either of them.[22] A year beforehand, Craig rejected the offer, as he felt the series had descended into formula: only when he read the script did he become interested. Craig read all of Fleming's novels to prepare for the part, and cited Mossad and British Secret Service agents who served as advisors on the set of Munich as inspiring because, "Bond has just come out of the service and he's a killer. [...] You can see it in their eyes, you know immediately: oh, hello, he's a killer. There's a look. These guys walk into a room and very subtly they check the perimeters for an exit. That's the sort of thing I wanted."[23]

As I said, the money must have changed his approach to the character, and its all about that $$$$$ now...As for B24, my hopes are low..especially considering the fact we have John Logan screenwriting it...be prepared for a gay Q

Some good suggestions. Amy Adams could be good. Marion Cotillard as well. Although she'd be the third French Bond girl in the Craig era. I agree with the comment above though. I always think it works best when they have a little known actress in the lead female role. Bond is not (or didn't used to be) about big name actors. Some of the best loved characters from the series are played by lesser known character actors and unknown models and the like. I though Berenice was good casting for SF for example and no one heard of her - just a shame she didn't get a bigger part.

Yes, Rose Byrne would have been good as Moneypenny. Not a fan of Harris personally as Moneypenny. It's a tough role though. No one has really pulled it off since Lois. I'd probably be happy if she stayed behind her desk in the next film but they seem intent on turning her into 'Bond's equal'. I respect Barbara Brocolli for her well known feminist views, but I really think she does screw things up sometimes when it comes to Bond. There are plenty of ways in which to bring in strong female characters without turning the Bond world on its head.

Seen 7.39 recently? She is a good actress, but not sure if she is Bond material. She is beautiful but she lacks something... mysterious? I could maybe see her as a minor Bond girl. Maybe. But it would be nice to have a blonde Bond girl.

@Smoloko123, clearly this post was meant to heat the place up. But you failed, my friend. You failed. Because our members are smarter that this; rather than furiously reply to your post, which is what you want, which is why you phrased it in this particular way, they ignored you. And I'm proud of that. Now, not so long ago, you posted a certain youtube video - you know which one - which put you in a very suspicious place. And now this. You're persistent, I've got to hand it to you. Now, this is a very civilized thread. There was nothing here, besides clean oxygen, to light a fire. With your two posts in this page, you brought the fuel and the matches! And yet, it didn't amount to anything. Perhaps the MI6Community has evolved beyond your archaic tricks. Perhaps this isn't the right place for you. Perhaps you need some evolution, some growing up, of your own before you return to this place. If ever. Because a comment like the one I quoted, we put that right where it belongs: in the toilet. Sorry man, you've given us all a couple of really good laughs. But even the comedy wears down after a while...

Ok, so I've decided, taking into many factors such as age, beauty, talent, body of work and other factors that may make for an interesting Bond girl; I've decided that despite there being an insane amount of potential candidates out there, I think I want to actively campaign and champion, Natalie Dormer as the next Bond girl or at least a Bond girl at some point in the near future.

I remember seeing her for the first time and thinking she looks like a young, slightly more attractive Diana Rigg and interestingly enough she play's Diana Rigg's granddaughter in Game of Thrones.

Great post (to some extents). I agree that the idea of a 'Bond girl' is so outdated and cliched and if anything the films should be trying to move past that type of character.

This is one of the reasons that I loved SF because instead of a leading girl for Bond to bonk we have Judi Dench taking centre-stage. It's a departure but it works because the approach is much more character centric. SF was a very mature Bond film in this regard because I reckon numerous drafts of the screenplay probably tried to include M's death but keep the typical Bond girl role. Once they pushed up the M role to second-lead it clearly came together seamlessly.

Bond movies need Bond girls, if not it becomes way too puritan and austere. But the Bond girls need to be developed and have complexity.
  • edited January 2014 Posts: 11,425
Agree. We haven't had a proper Bond girl in the whole DC era. Vesper was great but totally atypical.

I feel DC's been a little constrained by the plots. I'd like to see something more happy go lucky, expansive and self-assured. Sure a strong female lead or female villain can really improve the film, but bringing Bond's MI6 colleagues in as central players - M and Moneypenny, just makes the films a bit too domestic - sort of family dramas set in an increasingly unglamorous world.

Apparently Judi Dench has more screen time in SF alone than Desmond Llewelyn had in his 17 films as Q, making her portrayal of M the most common character in the series after Bond himself.
I think we have overall very good, even great Bond girls during the Craig era. So far anyway. But their importance in the last two movies was diminished in the plot. I do hope to see one that is more central.
  • edited January 2014 Posts: 11,425
I think Vesper was the high point. The women in QoS were a bore. Berenice was good in SF but sadly shortlived. I don't mind Naomi Harris per-se, but am not massively keen on the way they're developing the new Moneypenny. For me the Vesper characterisation and Eva Green's performance was perfect. The fact they were drawing on Fleming was probably a large part of why it worked so well, but I think Green was excellent. Nothing since then has really come close, but I think the success of the relationship in CR is fairly rare in Bond movies. It would be nice to see a proper relationship develop over the course of the movie. Despite the screen time given to Bond and M in SF I didn't personally feel that I learnt anything new about them by the end of the film - it was just the same old 'now she doesn't trust him, now she does' schtick we've been seeing since GE.

What we really need is a Bond girl similar to GE's Natalia(who is criminally underrated btw). She was a Bond girl through and through but she wasn't some dopey, screaming damsel who helplessly needed Bond to brush her teeth for her. She was tough but still extremely feminine. She's the sort of Bond girl I want to see more of. None of this Bond's equal crap or side-kick nonsense. Heck, she doesn't have to be THAT deep either. Sometimes it just works best to keep things simple yet significant.

I agree with your general thesis, although I've never been a fan of Natalia. I'm trying to think of an example and to be honest, the best one I can come up with is Pussy Galore - dodgy sexual politics aside - she's till one of the strongest and most memorable female characters in the series. I actually think the fact Blackman was the same age/a bit older than Connery gave the whole thing a bit more weight and believability.

I agree about the 'Bond's equal' thing in terms of making the girl a match in terms of the action - this has proven a dead end almost everytime they've tried it. But I do think some kind of emotional equality is helpful - it adds plausibility and makes the films much more entertaining IMHO. It's fine for Bond to have a few silly liaisons but the main girl is always better when there's some kind of plausibility.

I'm a big Daniela Bianchi fan as well, although her character is a little bit daft.

As a woman who completes Bond I see Pussy Galore, Natalya, Holly Goodhead (even though I am no fan of MR), Honey Ryder (partially), Tracy (again, partially), Pam Bouvier and Octopussy among others.

As a woman who makes his life more difficult, I see Honey Ryder, Tatiana, Domino, Solitaire, Tracy, Lupe Lamore (much better than the overrated Pam, by the way) and yes Kara. Basically, they can be central to the plot (Tatiana is maybe the archetype of this one) or peripheral, but because of her Bond has one extra worry makes the plot more exciting: he needs not only to kill the badguy and stay alive, but he needs to protect an innocent too. Imagine the last part of DN without Honey Ryder and you don't have the same story, and a much weaker one as well. I think it is this particular kind of Bond girl we need for Bond 24. Not a professional, but a woman who is lost in a dangerous game and toward whom our feelings go to.
  • To me, for whatever it's worth to anyone else, SF was a very strange film in this respect. M and Moneypenny were the main Bond girls and in a non sexual sense. Substitute Camille in QOS and it was more or less the same thing except that there was at least some mutual desire there. Severine was the sac lamb just like Fields. So basically I don't care what the new Bond girl or girls are like as long as Craig FRIGGIN ENDS UP WITH ONE OF THEM AT THE END!!!

I have detected a mathematical relation for the Craig era:

    (Q + MP) x BG = constant

which means that the more Q and/or MP we get, the less we see of Bond Girls (BG). SF restores a few of the original elements but effectively tones down the Bond girl thing. With more of MP promised in Bond 24, I wonder if we're not going to see any Bond girl at all. Unless of course there's a big paradox hidden in that... ;-)
