Creepiness in Bond Films

  • If Woody Allen had been cast as Bond in FYEO, it's unlikely he would have turned her down.

Bond films give us a lot of stuff. Sadism, sex, deaths.
I wonder if there are any scenes or characters that just creep us out beyond reason.
    Mine in no particular order:
    Dario's smile
    LeChiffe in general
Silva removing his teeth (I cannot bear to watch this scene, I always close my eyes when this part comes up)
Nic Nac watching Bond and Goodnight in bed (seeing that sweaty face just gets me)
    Blofeld in drag

The scarecrows in Live and Live Die, Carver finding the "warning" in the room from the same release, Jaws biting Kalber in the phone booth, seeing Wint and Kidd at the windows as the ship leaves port, The Doctor Kaufman character from Tomorrow Never Dies, Plenty O Toole in the drowning pool.

I did think about including Raoul Silva in his holding cage and teeth moment, but what may of been a degree unsettling after the first viewing, now invariably results in snickers and simply constitutes a moment of unbridled humor

One that springs to mind is when the Perla de las Dunas receptionist asks General Medrano if he would like a drink, to which he says something like "What a lovely question", then as she walks off, Medrano and the Colonel of Bolivian Police look at each other and laugh. Not 'scary' creepy, but more so 'disturbing' creepy, as we know by this point that the two characters aren't the nicest of guys.
  • When Red Grants stalks then kills the fake Bond in the SPECTRE hedge maze.

The attempted assassination on Bond in YOLT when the poison slides down the silk thread is pretty creepy.

When Alec Trevelyan moves in on Natalya.

    Every aspect of Dr. Kaufmann.

The scene in MR where Jaws, wearing that huge, grinning carnivale costume, comes down the alley towards Manuela is quite creepy. As is all of the psychedelic lighting and disembodied, hypnotic Blofeld voice stuff in OHMSS. Berry's synth score is masterful to boot.

As a child, this scared me so much I wouldn't watch the rest of the movie. I had caught MR on TV in the middle of the movie or so, I didn't know it was a James Bond. I stopped watching. And pretty much all of the villain's actions in FRWL have something creepy in them. Again, as a child, just watching the advert on TV made me avoid the movie out of sheer terror. Rosa Klebb just scared me too much!

Is Jaws in that carnival costume scary? I never thought so. In fact when I saw it again on Sky recently I thought it was quite funny - especially when he starts joining in when the party-goers show up.

In Spy there are times when he's quite creepy though.

Another one - Donald Plesence's voice.

Yes. Good call. Medrano and the Chief of Police are a pretty loathsome--and underrated--pair of characters.

PS--There's a good bit of creepiness in TB's Shrublands sequences what with all the skulking about and the chap with his face all bandaged up.
  • Another creepy factor or two: Elvis looked odd but Dominic Greene was a philanthropist, didn't have any noticeable marks like most Bond villains but was so human-like that it was difficult for the shallow folk to easily notice his cruelty to humanity. Quantum had him killed after he drank motor oil Bond gave him. Just that can of motor oil and leaving him in the desert was like a scene from a Martin Scorsese film where a main character meets his demise.
  • Creepiest look ever I thought from Casino Royale, they just kept the camera on him too long he looked odd .....

Yes, it was certainly something very different and I'm glad that it was - you could only imagine what happened to him and that was creepy in itself.

Greene had a very creepy look in QOS. Bregenz. In a car. Leiter says to Beam, "And you want us to get in bed with them?" or words to the effect.

He said he was a mix of Tony Blair and Sarkozy as Dominic Greene and it's hard to argue with him on that.
  • Probably the creepiest moment was in LALD in the graveyard, when Baron Samedi rises from the grave, and Bond shoots him and he cracks in pieces like he's made of ceramic. But then his lifelike eyes roll back into his head... it's pretty disturbing. I love it.

:)) I always thought that way too. "If I stare long enough, she'll say yes!"

Creepy to me was Bond bedding Andrea knowing Goodnight was in the armoire, and Bond bedding May Day at all.
    Moore had some creepy moments...

Well I guess everyone's entitled to their opinion.

    And I wholeheartedly agree ;)
  • Looking through all responses it was interesting to see that no participants mentioned the tarantula from Dr No. While a genuinely creepy (no pun intentional) moment for many viewers, whatever tension it attempted to generate was rendered just about void and redundant by the stupid sound effects as Connery got to work with a shoe. Almost (in fact they did) spoiled a decent scene with some unnecessary and asinine sound effects

Going to add the pre title sequence from Octopussy into this also, as from recalling one or two first viewings, 009 being chased through the woods in East Berlin by the knife throwing twins did in fact, offer some genuine moments of trepidation

I find the tarantula scene in DN very suspenseful, and a scene when Connery Bond shows genuine fear. As for the sound effects and the music, I think it actually adds to the B movie charm of the whole movie, so it didn't bother me. That said, I did not find the scene creepy. Dr. No giving the tarantula to Dent, however, was quite creepy.

Been awhile since I've done one of these, but here goes (in no particular order):

    Klebb hitting on Tatiana
    Psychadelic Blofeld
    Cross-Dressing Blofeld
    Baron Samedi
Nic Nac peeking in on Bond and Mary.
    Stromberg
    May Day
    Dario
    Le Chiffre's version of paddleball.
    Dominic Greene
Silva showing what a bad dental plan he had.

Green does give us some creepiness just by his appearance but what about the scene in SFwhen Silva attempts to feel Bond up and when Bond says, "What makes you think this is my first time?"
Silva jumps up, "Oh Mr. Bond."

A fellow fan and good friend of mine said that Bond would be a sexy beast and the idea of him loving men is not quite a reach.

    Your thoughts?

"Gayside"? Bond was displaying sarcasm. As for Silva's "feeling up", it was only mere torment, or to make Bond feel uncomfortable.

Personally, for me, I agree, I think Gay Bond is quite a reach yet, but keep it open. A case of the amoral bedsheets, I said it somewhere but, what about of Bond and Jynx bumping uglies? Creepy they feast.

I thought I was watching a vampire movie the first time, with a Dracula on steroids or something.

Would it count to consider that Connery's last scene filmed for DAF was when Bond was in a coffin? If NSNA hadn't been made, it would have been creepy.
Yes, but casual viewers would be ignorant to that information. Only hardened Bond enthusiasts, for the most part, would be aware they were Connery's last scenes filmed that year. It's kind of creepy to an extent that we look on it as you mentioned, had NSNA not gone ahead, but even then, that's not even an official film of the series, so I look on it as Diamonds being Connery's last appearance as James Bond, at least in an official capacity. Still content to go with the gorilla girl as a genuine creep moment for some viewers
