Wow, some of us are taking this game rather seriously, aren't we? I don't have a problem with the playful banter but let's not go overboard please. It's just a game and I realize that this list may not be an accurate representation of your personal rankings. There's no need to get yourself worked up over it. Okay, with that out of the way, let's play another round.

Disagree. It was the right thing to lower the points. It is @Thunderfingers game, after all.

My main objection was how the points were lowered. Taking a flat point total away from every film throws off the differential. For example, GF had it's total lowered by more than 50%, while GE had it's total lowered by less than 30%.

If you're going to adjust the scores, you have to do so evenly to keep the "spread" or point differential between films intact. The only way to do that is to lower each score by the same percentage, not just hacking off the same number of points.

That said, what's done is done. Perhaps something to keep in mind for the next game.

Not trying to pick a @Quarrel with you, but that reasoning is flawed. Everyone has been given a positive and a negative vote each day. If I were to put percentages into the equation, I would in reality cancel several votes. The ratio needs to stay the same, otherwise it is unfair.
Example: One film has 20 points, another 5. I remove 20 percent from each, i.e. four points and one point respectively. I will then have rendered three positive votes nul and void. Do you see my point?

Yes, but the ratio does not stay the same by your method, and that's why it doesn't work. On the surface it seems fair, but mathematically you're eliminating more votes by taking everything down by the same number.

    For example:

Film A has 100 points, film B has 50. In other words, film A has twice the points of B (ratio 2:1).

If you take 20 percent off each, film A now has 80 points, film B has 40.
Result: film A's lead over B remains constant (i.e. twice the point total, the ratio remains 2:1)

If you take 20 points off each, film A still has 80, but film B now has 30 points. Result: film A's lead has actually grown over B. The ratio is no longer 2:1, its 2.67:1 Film A now has more than twice the points of film B. Looking at it another way, you've rendered 10 votes for film B null and void.

Correct, the word ratio was wrong. I meant difference. An example: Say FRWL has 28 points, and TB has 4 points. By reducing all scores with, say, 50 percent each, I will have canceled the 14 previous upvotes for FRWL, but only the two previous upvotes for TB. You seem to forget that all films had the same starting point.
But why 20 percent or 50 percent, by your logic it is only fair if the same percentage is removed from all films. Say I remove 90 percent then, and they all end up with only 1 or 2 points each. How is that fair? Forget about introducing decimals. Take away 100 percent from each film equally, and the result is fair?

It IS fair because you would be taking the same amount from each film. By taking a flat amount from each film, you're actually taking MORE from some films than others which is unfair by definition. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it is a mathematical fact.

I don't mean to create an argument here (it's hard not to sound upset when you get into discussions like this on the internet, but I really don't have any hard feelings here), but trust me, this is a matter of math and something I deal with on a daily basis in my work (and my coworkers, who have checked me on this as well). I encourage you to seek out anyone you know who works with statistics (or finances even) and ask them. They may be able to explain to you better than I can.

For what it's worth, this is why our tax system is based off percentage and not a flat amount ($20k to the rich is pocket change, but to the people living below the poverty line $20k is their entire income. That is inherently unfair and exactly why no country has that type of system.) Granted, the tax system is on a graduated percentage system (the rich pay a higher percentage than the poor), but the base concept is the same.

But, with all that said, I'll drop the subject. I'll drop out of the game as well. After the cheaters who created new accounts just to get more votes, and now this distortion of the scores, it really doesn't make sense anymore.

Oh, and in case you think this was sour grapes, my films were the higher scores (SF, CR) and I was voting against some of the lower scores (LTK, OP). So your method, flawed as it is, actually helped my favorite films and hurt the ones I was trying to eliminate. I'm just a stickler for fairness and the correct use of numbers I guess. :-)

I am not upset either, @Quarrel and will leave this argument alone too. After this that is:
Taking away 100 percent from each film and declare the rest a tie is hardly more fair than reducing the score with seven points for each remaining film, as I chose to do.
They all started with ten points each. Using my method, the starting point of each and every film has in effect been reduced to three points. The same starting point for them all. The succession of elimination is not affected in this manner. With your method, it is.
We are not calculating some average here, and should not punish the more popular films and reward the lesser popular. Statistics or taxation is a poor comparison.
And my own math skills are perfectly sufficient. But thanks for your input anyway, it is just that your reasoning is flawed. ;) Carry on, friends.

How did Thunderball go before Goldfinger? That is an atrocity, right there.
