A very interesting ranking. Love the love for SF, LTK, GE and LALD. And you've even given DAF some appreciation, which is a pretty rare thing. But TB No. 23? Wow!

This ranking was based on how much I watch them. I watch Thunderball the least, as it is really boring, apart from Fiona and Connery.
  • @hildebrand I've read that blog before. Definitely an interesting ranking but it was really fun seeing how detailed he got on that series.

Do either of you have a link to this blog?

Not on the forums, but once a movie blog I like to read (B+ movie blog) did a series on Bond and they relegated TLD to last in their ranking.

Eh? @-) I can see why many of them are a contender for last, but there are a few that surely get immunity ..?

FRWL,GF,OHMSS,TSWLM,FYEO,TLD,CR - I'm all for open-mindedness and individual taste, but how any of those make it to last place on any list is beyond me.
  • Thank you very much, @hildebrand_rarity. I might have seen it before, looking at it now, but in that case it will be fun to reread.

It is an odd list. I've seen pretty much every online ranking there is (since I've gone through pretty much all of them while I was bored).

I'm not quite yet through with my official Spring/Summer 2014 Bondathon Ranking, but having read a post somewhere from earlier in this thread about ranking by purely an enjoyability factor, I'd like to try my hand at a ranking like that.

Always Enjoy, 100% of the time

    From Russia with Love
    Diamonds Are Forever
The Man with the Golden Gun
    For Your Eyes Only
    A View to a Kill
    License to Kill
    GoldenEye
    Tomorrow Never Dies
    SkyFall

Usually Enjoy, with some instances of disinterest here and there

    Dr. No
    Thunderball
    Octopussy
    The Living Daylights
    The World is not Enough
    Casino Royale
    Quantum of Solace

    Half-and-Half; sometimes enjoyable, sometimes boring

    You Only Live Twice
    Live and Let Die
    The Spy Who Loved Me

    Barely Make it Through

    Goldfinger
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    Moonraker
    Die Another Day

Well said. I really don't understand the love this film gets around here. Massively overrated IMO.

I would agree TB is overrated to an extent, but still fairly enjoyable. It stands right now as my least favorite of the golden age films (DN through OHMSS), but I still liked it a lot. There are still a few good merits to it, but I agree it's among the most overrated.

Difference of opinion is always welcome in my book. TB is my favorite Bond film on most all days of the week but I can easily be in the same room with someone who despises it. It's part of what makes being a Bond fan so much fun.

At the end of the day though the first 4 Bond films will always be my "Golden Age" or whatever you want to call it. Connery at his best and all 4 are memorable in their own way with plenty of diversity along the spy-spectrum.

I can see how some can think TB is overrated, but I don't see how people can actively dislike it.

I wanna rate the movies as a hard core uber-serious version of myself:

    1. From Russia With Love
    2. Dr No

    The rest suck.

And if I wanted to do an extremely overzealous ranking (can't even do a ranking...) filled with favoritism, here's how it would be.

    1.) Goldeneye
    2.) There are other films?

    6) MR
The rest aren't so much fun... :-??

    Rankings as of 17/06/14

    001- On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
    002- A View to a Kill (1985)
    003- Goldfinger (1964)
004- For Your Eyes Only (1981)
    005- Licence to Kill (1989)
006- The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
    007- GoldenEye (1995)
    008- The Living Daylights (1987)
009- From Russia With Love (1963)
    010- Casino Royale (2006)
    011- Skyfall (2012)
012- Live and Let Die (1973)
    013- Octopussy (1983)
014- The World is Not Enough (1999) +5
    015- Quantum of Solace (2008) -1
    016- Diamonds Are Forever (1971) +1
    017- Thunderball (1965) -1
    018- You Only Live Twice (1967) -3
    019- Dr. No (1962) -1
020- The Man With the Golden Gun (1974)
    021- Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
    022- Moonraker (1979)
    023- Die Another Day (2002)

A significant repositioning of TWINE after a viewing of it today. Much better than I remembered. I will write up my thoughts when I get the chance. It's part of my Brosnan Bondathon, and I have slightly warmed to him more. I particularly like his performance in the aforementioned film.

Going through my Bond-a-thon so far:
    001) On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    002) Goldfinger
    003) Dr. No
    004) From Russia with Love
    005) You Only Live Twice
    006) Thunderball
    007) Diamonds Are Forever

I feel comfortable with this ranking so far but honestly YOLT and TB are pretty much tied in quality; for now I give YOLT an edge because I found it more entertaining, but TB has a much better performance from Connery. They could flip-flop at any time; otherwise my list is pretty set for now.

Reading this made me think – on questionable grounds – it might be fun to try to reconstruct the actual ranking of my twelve-year-old self back in the day. I think I remember the Top 5 correctly, and the Bottom 5 seems about right. The middle of the list is hopefully a passable approximation. Not a terribly fascinating exercise obviously, but at least less predictable than my present-day ranking so I’ll present this one instead.

    1. You Only Live Twice
    2. Goldfinger
    3. Live And Let Die
    4. Dr. No
    5. The Spy Who Loved Me
    6. Diamonds Are Forever
    7. For Your Eyes Only
    8. The Living Daylights
    9. From Russia With Love
    10. Octopussy
    11. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
    12. Thunderball
    13. Moonraker
    14. The Man With The Golden Gun
    15. A View To A Kill

As for my 10/11/12-year-old ranking, I know for sure I used to like YOLT, DAF, TMWTGG a lot more, and FRWL, TB, OHMSS, and FYEO a lot less. Currently my ranking (after going through the first 8):

    001. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    002. Goldfinger
    003. Dr. No
    004. Live and Let Die
    005. From Russia with Love
    006. You Only Live Twice
    007. Thunderball
    008. Diamonds Are Forever

#4 and #5, as well as #6 and #7, are all extremely close for me.
GoldenEye was my favorite by a long shot. Goldfinger was #2 easy and The World Is Not Enough rounded out the top 3. My how my opinion of that one has changed...

I hadn't seen all of them as a 10-11-12 year old, mind you, but TSWLM, YOLT, and TND would've been up there as well.
  • edited June 2014 Posts: 11,189
Goldeneye was always my favourite too hands down. I still love it but it has fallen a little bit in the last couple of years. There's some rather ropey film-making at times.
I finally finished all of them about a month after seeing Casino Royale in theaters. Moonraker was the last Bond movie that I watched for the first time (not counting Quantum and Skyfall).

I find it fascinating, too. It blows away some of the claims made about the popularity of certain films here. Some are very vocal and repetitive about their preferences, and it then becomes a truth that it is the popular opinion.

So you have TLD at 5th and 11th? This sabotages my plans to include you in the next average revelation, whenever that is. I will include you if you correct your mistake.

Not judging, I am getting drunk as well. ;) ;) ;)
