AND ... Norway: perhaps they will film something there after all, so we cannot say it is entirely 100% scrapped yet. :)

Perhaps Hoytema is the force behind them trying to film something (anything) there, even though they've moved beyond the original plan? Interesting to see what happens.

But let us not speak as though these are facts. An Australian film-maker not tied in to the Bond franchise is giving us these location rumors, and Hoytema is all but 'source-speculation' at this point. I don't want anyone confused. Some of us remember what happened last time..

And yes, I've amended the title to make it seem less than 100%.

Indeed. But I'm happy Hoytema seems to be likely. Still unconfirmed.
Good heavens, by the time fall rolls around I really want some official news, EON!

Compared to the nothing we were getting earlier this year, I'm currently having a blast. I think I've had to update the thread 3 times in the past 2 days!

I do want to know the cinematographer soon (I've said that countless times on many threads, I know). I just enjoyed Deakins work so much - I want another highly respected cinematographer. Official news would be great. I don't know why they would hold off telling us, unless the contract is not quite yet signed.

They would never announce the cinematographer, it would be the cinematographer telling us, and spilling the beans that they're doing the film and you don't do that unless you are Roger Deakins. Hoytema may talk soon enough.

The official word, like with most things, will come in the press release announcing the film in December.

He will also be getting a lot of coverage with the release of Interstellar in November and likely on into the Oscar season. I'm sure he'll spill the beans as it would give Interstellar and Bond both a lot of press. I'm sure his work on Nolan's film with at least have him nominated come awards time. Good for Bond if he's attached, they'll want to get that out there.

Seriously, why would they not announce the cinematographer? I did not realize that just was not done. I'll look for interviews with Hoytema, especially with Interstellar out hopefully he will say something.

So what will EON announce for sure?

    Singer/Artist/Artists for theme song
    Composer
    Cast

    Anything else?

Roberts tells that the producers were looking for a location fitting Svalbard, but recent script changes (Purvis and Wade?), made Svalbard unsuitable.

Here's a theory: P&W added a skichase in the snowy environment, and there are no slopes on Svalbard. Plenty in Austria.

But Austria instead of Svalbard? So we have another case of doubling, I guess? Somewhere with snow, but no visible landmarks. It could actually be anywhere, but this looks like a nice villains lair on Svalbard, though:

That the just made me giddy like a school girl in irrational Bond fandom. So Bond like. *Must. Not. Get. Hopes. Up.*

Is there any piece of evidence that snow will be featured?

Just the mention of Austria (and possibly, possibly Norway) as a location. Evidence? Hmmm.

If the source is correct about Svalbard - yes. There's almost nothing but snow there.

And the source in the article does say Austrian Alps. Mountains. Excitement. Joy. Squeal.

Doing some research, it is apparently the Administration Building for The Governor of Svalbard (the Island). The Island seems to be research-oriented. NASA has an outpost there. So let's see..

*If it doubles for Austria*, We have what could be a cool villain lair, which is a government building, in *maybe Austria*, where Quantum has been known to meet, on an Island that is based around geological research, after the feature Quantum of Solace's plot was based around Quantum manipulating the geology of a country for political and financial gain, and the main villain was a geologist. A movie that just so happened to have the same writers that were just brought back on Bond 24 to bring a plot that is 'substantially different' than the original draft.

That is 100% speculation and I'm sorry.

I've moved this discussion into another thread: http://www.mi6community.com/index.php?p=/discussion/9325/making-connections-why-quantum-could-feature-in-bond-24#latest

LOL. I knew it - "substantial changes" to the script. I bet that means a fair bit more action unfortunately coupled with cheesy humour. If Logan did scribe a gritty, cold, dark screenplay with good character movement it would have been right up my alley. It won't happen though in Bond films. Each film must pretty much be a carbon copy of the next unfortunately but that's Bond I guess. I don't have the excitement that I used to for these movies. My interest diminishes by the day. I would have preferred to have Campbell as director. Mendes I think, wants to make Bond films more in the Goldfinger mold where as I prefer Bond flicks more along the lines of Dr No, FRWL, OHMSS, TLD, LTK and Casino Royale.

Substantial changes may be the plot. Actually, a change that is substantial in a script seems to indicate, to me at least, plot rewriting, not one liners which are cosmetic. And Logan, with all his qualities, makes rather thin plots.

Well, the plot is the first thing I thought of when I first heard about all this but admittedly, aside for Star Trek Nemesis, which didn't have the best of plots, I don't know what other films Logan has written. So, I just presumed that because Logan is such an established Hollywood screenwriter that he would have had a talent for crafting good plots for some reason so I wondered if it was other aspects of the script they changed. They haven't mentioned that they have added more action set pieces which is a good sign but I wouldn't be surprised if they have, knowing them.

I love Austria, and the Austrian Alps in particular, but I really was pushing for Scandinavia, just for a new country for Bond.

Yeah, I was hoping for Scandinavia.

You know, all these girls who have auditioned for Bond girl roles all look just pretty average or slightly above average to me. Still, it's the acting that is the most important obviously.

Problem with the island is that Austria is a landlocked country. I am no expert, but I could see more Austria featured as Scandinavia than the other way round (even though Austria being a landlocked country, I doubt it could look convincingly like a place so connected to the sea). But I think if either are used, they should be as themselves.

Speculative maybe, but my wish of seeing an Austrian castle seems a bit less of a long shot now.

Nemesis was maybe his worst movie, with a ridiculous plot. Some of the dialogues however were really good, far superior to the whole. Even Logan's maybe most reknown movie, Gladiator, has a rather simplistic plot, with its good shares of holes (and filled with historical inaccuracies). What salvage the movie are the dialogues and characters.

We got different info at different times on Skyfall, but perhaps not "officially" that I can't remember. It wasn't all at once.
  • Probably irrelevant for this topic, but how long does it possibly take for the Norwegian government (or any government at all) to have the incentive finished?

For posters that have seen Hoytema's work, what can you say about him? Is there a particular style or effects that he is known for? I'd like to see a work or two of his if he is announced as DOP.

His work is great. High contrast, great visuals, and works well with low light. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Interstellar are his two biggest projects so far.

Many thanks for the quick response! I should probably check out Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy regardless of whether he is the Bond DOP. Looks like a fantastic film. Interstellar looks to have promise as well.

  • The Norwegian James Bond Magazine ("James Bond-magasinet") was interviewed and
quoted in the the newspaper Dagbladet.

As I understand it, not all locations have been found in Austria. Fingers crossed to Norway.

Please see the article at The Norwegian James Bond Magazine also...

  • As a Norwegian, I think that the Norwegian nature is unique and spectacular. Especially the fjords (very rarely used in big movies, so in this way a very unique location).

One can find huge mountains in many countries, but especially the Norwegian fjords are very unique.

This is a showreel from Western Norway Film Location:

Some photos from the fjords: http://www.wnfc.no/filmlocations/fjords/

I also recommend checking out this video:

  • Another great video from the western part of Norway

Thanks for those, simply because I love Norway's fjords and have always wanted to go there. Someday I will, maybe. It would be spectacular in a Bond film. Even if just a flyover. There is some unique and gorgeous nature there for sure.
