What Are Your Top 5 Reboot/Prequels?

Empire Magazine is always looking back on great moments in film, as well as reporting on recent news.

On the front page of their website, they recently created a (very good) list of their Top 10 Movie Prequels, one of them being Casino Royale. Here is the link: http://www.empireonline.com/promotions/theaffair/

Definition of prequel: A literary, dramatic, or cinematic work whose narrative takes place before that of a preexisting work or a sequel.

Casino Royale made the list with these 9 others:
Batman Begins
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
XMen-First Class ( Fassbender playing Bond for the majority of it ;) )
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Manhunter
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Infernal Affairs
Star Trek (2009)
and.. The Godfather Part II

To make it a tad easier, lets make it a Top 5 list. What movies make your top 5 Movie Reboots/Prequels? ( They don't have to be from this list ;) )

Personally, I'm hoping that X-Men: First Class and Rise of the Planet of the Apes end up not being prequels, but the starts of new franchises clear of their predecessors.

Anyway, in alphabetical order...

Batman Begins
Casino Royale (2006)
The Godfather Part II (De Niro's arc, obviously)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Star Trek (2009)

I, too, would like to see the XMen series.. er.. re done.

Oh, and you didn't have to pick from the list :P

You hit the nail on the head! What a mess of a list.

Hell, even Casino Royale isn't a prequel, it's a reboot. Like Batman Begins.

I think where they were going was the fact that all these movies give a backgriund story into characters that have previously been established. So maybe not prequels by strict definition, but definitely stories of each characters previous exploits.

Favourite prequels:

1) Casino Royale (if it really is a prequel of course)
2) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
3) Exorcist: The Beginning
4) X-Men FC
5) Temple Of Doom
6) Episode I - The Phantom Menace
7) Star Trek

(Possibly The Thing, we'll know soon)

I disagree about Manhunter being a prequel. It's the first Lecter film ever released and technically, there isn't all that much Lecter in it.

True, however I still fail to understand why it's a prequel. Red Dragon was the first Lecter novel and film (named Manhunter). It's like saying DN is a prequel to the Bond films!

Most of Empire's list is made up of movies that aren't so much a prequel as say a story set before the original. They're just movies of a character at an earlier time than previously presented.

Also prequels must come after an already released film. If the "prequel" was first in a series with characters we've seen, it would be a reboot technically, and if it was a stand alone film that had characters we'd never seen it would just be the first film in that series. Man I'm confused.

Haha I fear this confusion may ease this discussion into failure :/

Change it to best reboot?

Well, Manhunter isn't a story set before the original. It is the original.

Reboots -
Casino Royale
Batman Begins
XMen-First Class
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Star Trek (2009)

Prequel -
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Original movies -
Manhunter
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Infernal Affairs (I presume this to be the US version)

What a Completely ridicolous list from such a rexpected magazine.

I think we should coin a new term. How does "requel" sound? Or do we prefer "preboot"?

I think "preboot" sounds a bit like the term for a date you go on to break up with your girlfriend. Not to be confused with "preroot" which is, of course, pre break-up sex.

Reboot:

Batman Begins
Hulk

Prequel:

Back To The Future 2. Back to the 60's
Titanic. Present (1997) Rose tells about what happend 85 years a go in 1912!
Back To The Future. Back to the 60's
Godfather 2.

Time forward:

Terminator 2 (1991). 2027!
Back To The Future 2. 2015!
Terminator (1984). 1997
Terminator 3

I see Casino Royale 2006 as Re tell: Movie tell something about the past in present time with a twist, but not be a reboot or prequel:

Bond get his Tuxedo from Vesper like the 50's novel. Bond get his 007 in the beginning of the movie, in the novel Bond get 007 also at the beginning. Stil the Dryden thing lost me completely (possible something to do with Bond 23.) and that it be in black and white i see it as alternatief to show cold late evening. A picture from Dryden with his wife and a litle girl and he having same Ipod as Bond at the end be strange. The monkey behavour of James happend before he meet Vesper. I get the feeling the 007 in the beginning and 007 on the mission in Madagacar be things to get some trust back from M.. Things go wrong another misstep of M. The movie is nothing withoout QOS.

Iam happy with QOS bring back some older elements of the movies (over all iam a Bond movie fan, of course i know those be nothing with the novels.) and there look more the novels (Made QOS look like more on Roger Moore or Sean Connerry movie with some Brosnan elements). But at the time of the release of CR this not be what i expect in the first place. When i heard about not in to made a movie yet based on the first novel of fleming Bond at his beginning i expect a Bond at his start at Mi6, No Felix, stil having his parents. But CR turn in what it be, a 24 setting Bond movie.

A delete scene from QOS created some remours about Bond 23 going to yuse Yolt and TMWTGG elements. Possible Eon going to yuse this to re tell other things.

X-Men: First Class is a prequel not a reboot. It's not telling the same story as the original and is set before an already made film.

The rest I agree with.

Wellll THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY was made after the first two films in the series, and he retrieves his poncho at the end of film, which he is seen wearing in the earlier two films. While it is not defined as a prequel, most of its fan base sees it as so.

I don't think Back To The Future and its sequel should be considered prequels. Even if an one act in the film takes place in a different time frame, that doesn't mean the entire film is a prequel. Also, a minor detail though it is, we go back to the fifties, not the sixties. ;;)

We got enough snippets in The Bourne Supremacy, and a chunk of background in The Bourne Ultimatum. More Bourne isn't needed. The trilogy did all it was meant to do, and should be left alone, especially if Matt wasn't to play Jason again.

Reboot/Prequel/Schmequel, here are my favorites:

1. Casino Royale
2. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
3. Batman Begins

I really liked Manhunter a lot; but I agree about it being the first in the series, not a prequel.
