OHMSS Score- Why "TRY"?

edited October 2012 in Music Posts: 824
Why is the gorgeous cue, called "Try" on the album, so named? The cue accompanies Bond as he arrives at the hotel after saving Tracy on the beach and continues as he walks into the casino later, so why "Try"?

My view is that TRY may be an abbreviation for TRACY, that someone, maybe Barry, put on a track list and it wasn't written in it's correct form when sent to the LP manufacturer.

Certainly an odd title that doesn't appear to have an obvious reference to the film or it's characters.

Anyone got any views on this?

  • He says 'try' to Tract during their conversation. I don't have the exact quote, but I'm sure someone else will fill it in!

Yes it comes from the conversation Bond and Tracy have in their hotel room as far as I can remember!

An interesting and perplexing one, @PeterGreenhill. It's not from the dialogue, that's for sure. Doesn't this music feature when Bond is trying to help out Contessa Teresa at the roulette wheel only to be caught up in a fight in her room, so maybe it stands for... TRY to help a girl out and this is the thanks you get?

Tracy does say the line "Why do you persist in trying to save me Mr Bond?" in the casino scene and I've always assumed this is what the track title is referencing.

I'm sure the actual lines are...

Tracy: Why do you persist in rescuing me, Mr Bond?

Bond: It's becoming a habit, isn't it, Contessa Teresa?

Yep, no 'try' in that line.

I think it's it like Please TRY to stay alive, at least for tonight or something.

Its a beautiful tune. It starts up when Bond looks at the pool and we see the words "Casino" reflected in moonlight and red letters. The tune continues on as Bond moves thru the casino and meets Tracy for the second time. The tune is played throughout their conversation...
Great tune and helped to make this soundtrack the best of all the films.

I once read somewhere that it was a typo and the track was supposed to be called "Tracy." If I can find that article on the internet, I'll be sure to post it here.

not to be picky.. but the scene is Bond playing Baccarat.. Tracy comes up, and enters the game against the man Bond was playing - a lot of money is at stake... Tracy loses to the man, and she then tells one of casino people that she doesn't have any money (like she is intentionally trying to get herself in trouble).. Bond then speaks up and says that he and her had agreed to be partners for the evening (a lie) - he then forks over the chips to let the game continue...

Tracy: Why do you persist in rescuing me, Mr Bond?

Bond: It's becoming a habit, isn't it, Contessa Teresa?

Tracy: Teresa was a saint. I'm known as Tracy.

Bond: Well, Tracy, next time play it safe and stand on five.

Tracy: People who want to stay alive play it safe.

Bond: Please stay alive. At least for tonight.

And I stand corrected, haserot. :)

So for the Main Theme, exactly what part do the alphorns play? I've tried to isolate the sounds, but I'm not sure if they are the ones that sound in the background. Could someone confirm?

I am afraid they are not available anywhere. I have been looking for them for a long time, but never found them. If they were available, they would be on the internet.

It's one of my favourite scores to any film, not just Bond.
I had no idea that there were lyrics to the main theme.
    You learn something everyday. :)
  • It's obvious isn't it... if you play the music along to a really exiting moment in the rugby, it all makes sense.

It's an absolutely beautiful piece of music, love hearing it in the background of that entire sequence.
