If you were to show a Bond-virgin ONE scene from the entire series

Which would it be?

Once scene that sums up the essence what of Bond is (to you, obviously - this is a subjective question), so that someone who’d never seen one of the films or read any of the books would get the best possible first impression..?
As an arbitrary rule, Connery’s intro in DN doesn’t really count, I’m looking for smth more original - a less obvious scene that says more than just what is scripted.

After much consideration I’d have to go with the Koskov ‘defection/sniper’ scene from TLD. It is the perfect amalgamation of Fleming puritanism and cinematic 007 – topped off by John Barry at his peak. Dalton’s almost tragically reluctant-professionalism is hypnotizing. “Bring the chair…” ...class.

    The books and the films are startlingly different animals. What sums up the general populist view of the films (outrageous, death defying stunts, smart arse one liners) isn't what necessarily defines the books.

    Also, the films update whilst the books are now period pieces.

    As the films go, the original aston martin scene in GF is the point where the Bond films found their true vocation. The scene you talk of @AceHole is a good scene but doesn't really capture the essence of half of the films in the franchise.

    I understand your point though, so if you wanted a halfway house that has one foot in both then you may have nailed it first time.

    I agree completely that this is an exceptional scene.....almost FRWL in quality. Always takes me back to Kerim/Bond trying to kill Krilencu. Both brilliant.

    However, I don't believe it to be iconic enough.

    If I was going to hook a non-Bond fan, I'd go to Roger Moore's peak Bond - namely as follows:

    1. TSWLM entire pretitles opener - from sub scene to Gogol to XXX to Bond/babe scene to "I need you....so does England" to ski scene followed by jump followed by union jack followed by Bond theme followed by outstanding lyrical piece by Carly Simon. The whole thing smacks of the essence of movie Bond coolness....Nobody does it better

    2. TSWLM - anything from where Bond leaves Stromberg's with Anya to the start of the legendary Lotus chase scene to the underwater scene to the beach scene and the chap looking at his bottle

    3. TSWLM - anything in Egypt really

    4. MR pretitles - stolen shuttle to the fall from the plane followed by Jaws

    5. TND entire pretitles including opener bazaar/plane scene (similar to TSWLM)

    I see where you're coming from there. But I've opted for narrative and poignancy rather than the iconic nature of it.

    Having said that, scenes mentioned here such as the 'Spy' PTS, Aston in GF do sum up the iconic side of 007 movies very well.

    Bond's dinner with Vesper on the train does a pretty good job of summing him up - warts and all.

    Or as an introduction to the movies, TND's pre title sequence is an almost perfect Bond film in miniature. (not a single scene I know, but anyway…)

    The seen at Miss Taro's house in DN. You see Bond's almost predatory animalism toward women, and his cold-blooded nature, as well as his wit ("that's a Smith and Wesson" line).

    The PTS in TSWLM is probably better, but it was already picked.

    I vote for the laser scene in GF. The tension, the threat, the cold blooded larger than life villain, Bond having to talk his way out of a very dangerous moment.

    This is difficult, But I have to go with the entire Macau casino sequence in SF. Great stuff: the ride in; the banter with Moneypenny; the encounter with Severine (his martini is shaken and he says "Perfect"); the toast to his attempted assassins; the fight and the komodo dragons. It all encapsulates what makes Bond "Bond."

    Honorable mention: PTS in CR (glorious B&W that shifts to color at the gun barrel); PTS in TSWLM (I agree with others on this); ski chase in OHMSS; PTS in GE

    Without a doubt, I'd show a Bond newbie the duel between Bond and Alec Trevelyan on the satellite dish at the end of GoldenEye- besides some very exciting action, there's some character gold to Bond himself with the "No, for me" line, as well as the little grin he throws to Natalya when she shows up with the helicopter, showing how relieved he is to conclude such a gruesome mission. There's a lot of great 007 material there with the finale of GoldenEye.

    I can't believe it took someone some time to mention the PTS for GF. That's precisely what I would use.

    Because the PTS for TSWLM is already taken, I'm going to go in a different direction, and say the scene in Skyfall, when Silva leads Bond outside on the dead island, talking about "...there is nothing superfluous in my life...", and the entire scene with the the Macallan, vintage pistols, Severine with the scotch on her head tied to the destroyed statue, Bond in the tux, and the general decadence of the characters/props/wardrobe/dialogue, juxtaposed with the grit, danger, unwelcome quality of the environment they're in...
    Then we see Bond single handedly neutralize a group of henchmen, and use a gadget from Q Branch (however simple :P) to win round 1 against the supervillain.
    To me this scene really nails classic, iconic Bond!

    One scene ... meaning we can say a whole sequence ... I would go with the entire PTS of TSWLM. Plenty of other memorable scenes in great Bond films, but choosing just one to show somebody about Bond,I probably would choose that one, yes.

    This is difficult. I like to start at the beginning so I'd probably show this theoretical virgin the killing Dent scene as it perfectly captures the essence of being a secret agent. I'd also love to show the scene where Bond meets Honey on the beach.

    Either the tank chase from GE, the car chase from TLD, the fight with Necros on the net in TLD, the Golden Gate showdown from AVTAK (Yes, I'm one of those people who love that scene, crucify me!) or this:

    Sorry to piss all over your cornflakes but I absolutely despise this moment.

    There are so many fantastic believable stunts in this sequence - the plane to tanker transfer, the tanker smashing into the rock (an accident but left in the finished film because it looked so good), Bond clambering around on various tankers - and they just ruin it with this idiotic moment.

    Even though it was probably achieved with effects I don't mind the tanker driving on two wheels on its side because I've seen this done with cars, but to try to pretend that a cab weighing Christ knows how many tons can rear up and do a wheelie as credible proposition if they just show enough shots of Bond stamping on the pedals and turn the Bond theme up to 11 is treating the audience like retards.

    Its a Rog moment and if it was in a Rog film I might let it pass but there's no place for that in a Dalton film.

    Yeah I feel the same way about the wheelie. I like stunts that are difficult but don't violate the laws of physics.
