The opera sequence is fantastic, and by itself more interesting than most of the Broz films. Except GE, a really good Bond film.

    1 - Casino Royale
    2 - Tomorrow Never Dies
    3 - Quantum Of Solace
    4 - Skyfall
    5 - Goldeneye
    5 - Die Another Day
6 - The World Is Not Enough

Very diferente from many of you i know .... but it is what it is.
    I love QoS and TND.
In both the pace "makes" the movie, but in TND David Arnold's score sets the tone and Pierce Brosnam is at its best.
In QoS its that art-house look of it that i find unique.
The first of DAD is great to, but the 2nd half ruins it.
In Goldeneye its the EricSerra OST that makes me mad.
But what the hell, i like all teh Bond films .. even the ones i dont!!

Although if @DoubleOhhSeven switched his 5th and 6th place choices we'd be in sync.

I used to place TWINE above TND as Brosnan's second for years best but upon further reviewal I switched the two. While I'll admit TND completely plays it safe and is an uninspired Bond film while TWINE actually takes a few risks but none of those risks pay off. TND is as mundane as they come but TWINE misses the mark. Atleast TND accomplished what it set out to do which was basically a modern-day portrayal of the "classic" Bond blueprint and tick every box it can. Either way I rank both films very lowly. But hey atleast they were both better than DAD.

I agree with this. TND was the last time we saw that 'bigger than life' Bond that we got in YOLT, TSWLM & MR. I was surprised that they took this route with that movie, because after MR it seemed like we would never see it again. I'm glad they did it because it was a throwback to some extent. The movie had its flaws, but it's a guilty pleasure.

I don't think we'll see one of these again for a while.....at least not in Craig's run

So then you understand why it's my third favourite Bond movie! Tick the boxes with small tweaks and I'm good!
Give me Bourne-influenced stuff or angsty soul- searching nonsense & I'm just okay.
My literary movie Bond is damaged, & trying to hang on with duty, drink & lovely women.
My purely cinematic Bond is an action hero.
A mix of the two, whilst entertaining, are not my overall favourites.
That said, Bond is like pizza; even bad pizza is still pizza!

I'd say DAD is the last time we got the "larger than life" Bond. It was essentially Brosnan's Moonraker.

This is where we'll never agree. I prefer my Bond to be a character not a caricature. There are already so many generic action heroes.

A ranking would probably look something like this:

    Casino Royale
    Skyfall
    Quantum of Solace
    Goldeneye
    Tomorrow Never Dies
    Die Another Day
    The World Is Not Enough

    Looks about right to me.

You said your cinematic Bond is purely an action hero. You said you liked box ticking with "small tweaks". That sounds kinda generic to me. I'm not sure how I misunderstood. I guess it's all a matter of perception.

Re-watched GE this week after a good 15 years of not having seen it. Oh dear...

    #-o

I'm more and more inclined to think of TND as the only one of the Brosnan era films to hold up at all these days. Probably because it's a by-the-numbers 007 box ticking event, EoN were basically trying to 'do a TSWLM'...

You said your cinematic Bond is purely an action hero.
You missed that I have TWO movie Bonds, the box-ticking action hero AND the literary movie Bond who is damaged, & trying to hang on with duty, drink & lovely women. I was making the point that if I can't have the latter (my favourite kind) the former will do and that anything in between is filler for me.
    Savy? ;)

Didn't TLD pretty much do both of these? It did for me, but then I'm a staunch TLD defender :P

Actually, yes to a degree, but I'm mainly concerned with the Bond character; Dalton nailed the literary Bond, the purely cinematic boxes ticked around him him are fine with me. Brosnan was for the most part, action hero Bond. I'd place Bond in the bulk of Moore's movies in the mid-ground as neither solid action hero nor literary Bond. Just enjoyable entertainment. Craig's Bond is an unusual mix...

Dalton was a very good actory, but kinda scrawny, and I really never believed him as an action man. The head-butt at the beginning of TLD inside the jeep is a little, well, not believable.

You clearly aren't well versed in combat my friend, see a proper head butt is executed with a few inches or more for acceleration purposes, preferably while pulling your opponent towards you to increase the impact; in that jeep the head butt was not supposed to be a showstopper (too close for that), but just one of many things thrown at the thug.

One needs not be a combat veteran to notice an unconvincing film fight.

I appreciate small bits of violent reality in otherwise well choreographed dance recitals.

Sorry @chrisisall but that headbutt looked miles away from actually connecting. @doubleohdad is right. It looked like something out of a Roger Moore fight. It had nothing to do with the proximity in which Dalton delivered it. It was the fact that Dalton very clearly didn't make contact that and that my 94 year old grandfather could've delivered it with more intensity and energy. Dalton's headbutt to Dario in LTK is completely different story. Dalton looked like he crushed Benecio Del Toro's face with that one.

Ennh! Sorry Hans, wrong guess. I have Bond movies at my beck & call here and the connect looks real enough albeit light in impact. As I said, it was more a distraction to his enemy than anything else in the situation.

We'll then clearly you're only one here with the Bond films at your beck and call. Just so you know I've got a bluray player too. And from my angle the headbutt looks pitiful. But than again I don't have your extensive combat expertise. 8-|

It looked pitiful because it WAS pitiful. OMG, you guys just wanna fight for the sake of fighting. Or maybe you're reacting to my posts without actually READING them. :))
It was close quarters, and in that range you're quite limited in options. You throw what you can in the hopes some of it will be effective. The crap head butt was 100% realistic in that it was a distraction at best. Most fight scenes omit sloppy moves that aren't totally successful, and that's why I particularly like this one.
  • GoldenEye / Casino Royale
    Skyfall
    Tomorrow Never Dies
    Die Another Day
Quantum of Solace / The World Is Not Enough

    Something like that.
