'What a great line.' Lines in movies that made 'em famous.

Total Film Magazine did an article about funny lines in movies....Goldfinger's "Shocking, positively shocking!" came 19th out of 50.

So I though it would be good if we, the film lovers amongst us, could come up with great lines in films you love that made the film famous in cinematic history.

So film. Line and why you liked the line.

I'll start off with a few.

1.Dr.No.
'Bond, James Bond.'
Cinematic history is made and my life made happy happy.

2. Terminator.
'I'll be back'.
Sci-fi movies got the boost they needed and an action star is born.

3. Dr.Strangelove.
'Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.'
Great movie. Great performance. Made me love Kubrick.

4. The Godfather.
'I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse.'
Made me think that cinema can be truly artistic.

    1. Pulp Fiction (so many)
'What ain't no country I ever heard of; they speak English in WHAT?!'
And a star (Sam. L. Jackson) was born.

    2. Die Hard
    'Yippee Kay Yay, Mother Fu***r!'
And an action star (Bruce Willis) was born. (Hes ironically in both my top two..)

    3. Alien
'Get away from her you BITCH!'
    Iconic icon is iconic.

    4. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
'You see in this world there's two kinds of people my friend: those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig -click-'
Great line from Eastwood following the greatest scene in movie history.

    5. Dr. No
    'That's a Smith&Wesson, and you've had your six -thump-'
    Defined Bond as a B/A.

I'll stop there for now ;)

Why hasn't anybody mentioned this yet?

    Goldfinger
"Do you expect me to talk?"
"No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"

    "HERE'S JOHNNY!!"
    The Shining

the line delivery is so perfectly psychotic, and so out of left field, that I believe it's now more associated with Jack Nicholson than it is/was Johnny Carson.

"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster."
    Goodfellas

Who hasn't wanted to be a gangster at some point - they seem to live above the law, and always in luxury.. but as Scorsese is fond of showing us, the fall from grace is less glamorous, and often fatally grizzly.

Exactly! That should have been representing GF, not "Shocking, positively shocking". Ah well. At any rate, here's mine:

    Dirty Harry:
"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

Unforgiven(It didn't make it famous per say, it was brilliant already):
"The Schofield Kid: [after killing a man for the first time] It don't seem real... how he ain't gonna never breathe again, ever... how he's dead. And the other one too. All on account of pulling a trigger.
Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid."

    Airplane:
"Rumack: Can you fly this plane, and land it?
Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.
Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."

    Taxi Driver:
    "You talkin' to me?"

That's all for now. I'll be sure to post more.

    Dawn of the Dead (1978)
"You know Macumba? Voodoo. My granddad was a priest in Trinidad. He used to tell us, 'When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth'."

    SERENITY
"Y'all got on this boat for different reasons, but y'all come to the same place. So now I'm asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Because as sure as I know anything, I know this: they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten - they'll swing back to the belief that they can make people ... better. And I do not hold to that. So no more running. I aim to misbehave."

    Land of the Dead
"That's 'good shooting', Charlie, no such thing as 'nice shooting'."

Oh, and He-Man would suck without: "By the power of Grayskrull!"
  • From Russia With Love
"She should have kept her mouth shut."
    Very clever line.

    The Empire Strikes Back
"'Try' not. 'Do', or 'Do not.' There is no 'try.'"
That line stayed with me ever since I was a kid.

    Batman Begins
"I wasn't always here in the mountains. Once I had a wife, my great love. She was... taken from me. Like you I was forced to learn that there are those without decency who must be fought without hesitation, without pity. Your anger gives you great power, but if you let it, it will destroy you... as it almost did me."
The line speaks for itself. Such beautiful writing by Christopher Nolan.

I'll try to think of others and post later.

    Clint Eastwood
Bounty hunter #1: You're wanted, Wales.
Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood): Reckon I'm right popular. You a bounty hunter?
Bounty hunter #1: A man's got to do something for a living these days.
Josey Wales: Dyin' ain't much of a living, boy.

    Charles Bronson
    Snaky: Frank sent us.
Harmonica (Charles Bronson): Did you bring a horse for me?
    Snaky: Well... looks like we're...
    [snickers]
Snaky: ...looks like we're shy one horse.
Harmonica: Looks to me like you brought three too many.

    John Wayne
Reverend Clayton: You wanna quit, Ethan?
Ethan (John Wayne): That'll be the day.

    Martin: I hope you die!
    Ethan: That'll be the day.

Tom Doniphon (John Wayne): Whoa, take 'er easy there, Pilgrim.

Tom Doniphon: Liberty Valance's the toughest man south of the Picketwire - next to me.

Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin): You lookin' for trouble, Doniphon?
Tom Doniphon: You aim to help me find some?

Ransom Stoddard (Jimmy Stewart): You're not going to use the story, Mr. Scott?
Maxwell Scott: No, sir. This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

[After Valance has tripped Rance in the diner, causing him to spill a tray of food]
Tom Doniphon: That's *my* steak, Valance.
Liberty Valance: [laughing] You heard him, Dude. Pick it up.
    Ransom Stoddard: No!
Tom Doniphon: Hold it, Pilgrim. I said you, Valance; *you* pick it up.
Liberty Valance: Three against one, Doniphon.
Tom Doniphon: My boy, Pompey; kitchen door.
[Valance looks and sees Pompey at the door holding a shotgun]
    Floyd: I'll get it, Liberty!
[Doniphon kicks Floyd in the face as he bends down to retrieve the tray]

Donald Pleasence as Dr. Sam Loomis

"I met him 15 years ago.. I was told there was nothing left, no reason, no conscience, no understanding, not even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong... I met this 6 year old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face.. and, the blackest eyes, the devil's eyes... I spent 8 years trying to reach him, and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up, because I realized that what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply, evil."

    Love this from Clint in Dirty Harry;
    I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself.     And from the same film because it makes me laugh;
When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher's knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross!

Gordon Gekko: Teldar Paper, Mr. Cromwell, Teldar Paper has 33 different vice presidents each earning over 200 thousand dollars a year. Now, I have spent the last two months analyzing what all these guys do, and I still can't figure it out. One thing I do know is that our paper company lost 110 million dollars last year, and I'll bet that half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between all these vice presidents. The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated. In the last seven deals that I've been involved with, there were 2.5 million stockholders who have made a pretax profit of 12 billion dollars. Thank you. I am not a destroyer of companies. I am a liberator of them! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.

Patrick Bateman: Harold, it's Bateman, Patrick Bateman. You're my lawyer so I think you should know: I've killed a lot of people. Some girls in the apartment uptown uh, some homeless people maybe 5 or 10 um an NYU girl I met in Central Park. I left her in a parking lot behind some donut shop. I killed Bethany, my old girlfriend, with a nail gun, and some man uh some old faggot with a dog last week. I killed another girl with a chainsaw, I had to, she almost got away and uh someone else there I can't remember maybe a model, but she's dead too. And Paul Allen. I killed Paul Allen with an axe in the face, his body is dissolving in a bathtub in Hell's Kitchen. I don't want to leave anything out here. I guess I've killed maybe 20 people, maybe 40. I have tapes of a lot of it, uh some of the girls have seen the tapes. I even, um... I ate some of their brains, and I tried to cook a little. Tonight I, uh, I just had to kill a LOT of people. And I'm not sure I'm gonna get away with it this time. I guess I'll uh, I mean, ah, I guess I'm a pretty uh, I mean I guess I'm a pretty sick guy. So, if you get back tomorrow, I may show up at Harry's Bar, so you know, keep your eyes open.

Patrick Bateman: Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your a****** Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
