Homage means something done in respect or honor to someone or something. I mean here that those images or elements are part of Bond's world.

Let me clarify maybe not all such as the white tux is definitely a homage to GF but IMO a lot of it is just Bond being Bond.

The bat suit and car aren't homages to the old series ..its part of Batman's story.

I'm just saying that not everything there is meant so much as a homage.

I agree. When it comes to Bond there are certain staples that just can't be avoided, especially when there's a catalogue of 50 years worth of movies. The slightest deviation of what's come before people start accusing the film of not being a proper Bond movie and then when traditional elements are reintroduced tge movie is paying homage or referencing it's own history. However, I do think it's fair to say that there are a few homages considering what the Craig era has set out to achieve but other than that, it's all just Bond being Bond.

Not to get too hung up on this, but I teach art, and homage (or hommage) is something I spend a decent amount of time on, so I get picky about meaning.

How do you know which images and elements I refer too? Yes, the nods to CR-SF are not homages, but the references I was indicating in my original statement (I said reference or homage, so I really don't get what you are saying). And I included OP because it springs from the same short story as the Oberhauser's.

But as for the rest. Bond being Bond, would be the PPK or Q, etc. When I said homages, I meant homages:

DN - Bond dressed and posed as Connery when he's awaiting Dent.
FRWL - Face of Blofeld/Head of Spectre in shadow.
    GF - White tuxedo.
TB - SPECTRE meeting room, including execution of member.
OHMSS - At this point this is just in marketing, but the bullet hole and the use of the theme song are obvious homages to that film, and are there to evoke a connection.
LALD - Both the long dress coat and the get up with the black turtleneck with the shoulder hols

But then why do you choose the barrel roll of the helicopter as a reference to homage to TMWTGG and not TWINE ? I don't think we'll have a whistling noise. And are the Oberhauser screens a tribute to TND' Carver's ?

I personnaly consider Bond movies are genre movies, and all these concepts then disappear IMO. Some elements are part of the genre, and there you go.

There are some elements that are outside the genre (for instance I still don't get what they meant when Bond moved his fists at the casino like a drunken guy in Skyfall - despite LALD reference if you want, I don't find this scene is "Bond", it's more Johnny English, I've never seen this fight mentioned by anyone as a high moment of the franchise or even the movie), but in the end the genre always come back, or the franchise will die amongst generic spy movies.

Sorry I had a bit of a phone issue. Yes I agree with your examples as possible homages. Even two of them seen before in TND ...

I don't think I conveyed well what I was meaning.

Your original comment read to me that you were concerned that SP could possibly be nothing but homages.

My counter was just my opinion that not everything was meant as an intentional homage.

Here's a great example. Mendes et all noted and laughed that the ending of SF was reminencent of Home Alone but at conception it was not intended as a homage.

The trick is to do it in a way that seems fresh and not overtly derivative imho.

Some are going to notice it right away, and I think it will bother them, but for others it will only be subconscious, and will actually help endear the film to them.

That is a difficult thing to pull off.....some directors have done it far better than others. Martin Campbell for instance, and even Mendes himself (nearly every major scene in SF is an homage to something from the past, but I thought it was done very refreshingly).

I think my examples were specific and right on. The HOME ALONE business is an unintended (yet oddly accurate) joke. But I understand what you are saying.

I did say I was pretty confident that SP would not be all pastiche, but that it is a trap to look out for (ala DIE ANOTHER DAY).
But then why do you choose the barrel roll of the helicopter as a reference to homage to TMWTGG and not TWINE ? I don't think we'll have a whistling noise. And are the Oberhauser screens a tribute to TND' Carver's ?

Because, obviously I would think, the barrel role from THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN (aside from being first) is one of those iconic Bond moments, so much so that I find the shot/ stunt in question to be too glaring and reminiscent to be unintended as such. The scene you refer to in THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH has no widely accepted significance or resonance. If you can't aknowledge that, I have nothing to add and assume you're just being obstinate.

As I said in my earlier post, the Oberhauser connection is not an homage or reference. I link it to OCTOPUSSY because that original story is where the character comes from.

I respect your opinion and expertise... I think my tone started off offensive.

    For that part I apologize.

I also think all the responders made good points.

I think we are all agreeing more than we think.

The second TV spot aired on ESPN during NFL Countdown 2 hours ago.

    Let the hype commence!
  • The "reference" to the world is not enough through a barrel roll is so vague that I do not consider it a reference

When do you think the marketing machine will be running on full power? Early Oct?

Even earlier, depending on when the final trailer lands. When it does, expect TV spots to go full steam ahead in all territories. Maybe even in the next couple weeks we should be seeing more spots.

Well, this "superhenchman" table kick / Bond can't get his gun in time scene, could be taken straight from a Connery / Moore Bond movie, it's a "by the number" scene, and yet I'm sure most here love it (me included - If I exagerate, I consider this trailer gets Bond more than the whole of Skyfall :) ) So there's still life in the Bond genre, not sure we need to stray away from it...

Not quite. In a Moore movie tension would have been turned down by comedic moments. The henchman would have been more buffoonish at some point. For Connery's time, he had the widest variety of henchmen I think (silent hunter like Grant, or brute like Oddjob). I don't think he had someone like Hinx (big and fast).

This is a thread about trailers and tv spots with 95 pages. It stands to reason many have seen the new TV spot; and yes, there's some brief new footage but nothing spoilerish.

If you are from the U.S. then maybe, but not sure it has surfaced in the UK yet hence my question.

Is this TV spot the same one that was released in the UK on Friday?

It was released online worldwide on Friday night. Had its first airing in the US today.

Thanks for clarifying, that makes more sense. I was sure someone had mentioned that two had been classified in the UK and wanted to make sure that I hadn't missed one.

How can you judge if this will or won't happen from a few seconds in the trailer ?
And the TSWLM train fight with Jaws is rather straightforward, without any music.
As for the comment about Hinx being not similar to the henchman in YOLT or OddJob or whatever, this does not change from the fact he definitely fits the superhenchman profile.

Gee, it's hard to answer without spoilers :)

No problem. The UK ones you refer to are short no new footage cinema (not TV, BBFC wouldn't classify TV spots) spots promoting the ticket release (one says September 7, the other say Tickets On Sale Now)

I saw it on ESPN earlier this morning as well (not sure during what show). Looks like it'll be getting shown on networks with mostly male viewers.

was watching the 49ers and Vikings game on ESPN tonight - caught the SPECTRE TV spot twice....

whoever said a couple months back that the producers/studio isn't doing enough to promote the film.. well.. we are still 2 months out from the film opening here stateside, and we are already getting flooded with TV spots... i don't watch a lot of TV, and this is already the 4th or 5th time i've seen the commercial in the past week.

Haven't seen any on this side of the water yet. Makes sense to tackle the bigger demograph early, though. I'd say the UK/Ireland campaign will swing into gear in the next week to 10 days.

True. From what we can see, he sure does not look goofy like Jaws sometimes does.

Yes, how can that happen? I mean, seriously. They should be able to avoid such a thing.
