Where have all the beautiful Bond girls gone?

edited November 2011 in General Discussion Posts: 53
Am I alone is feeling that the Bond producers have once more sold fans short in their choice of Bond girls? When one thinks back to the early, golden years of the Bond franchise, the girls only ever seemed to get more and more beautiful. In his more recent outings, however, 'our hero' appears to have been partnered by a succession of run-of-the-mill pretty girls - coincidentally, with minimal acting skills. Another 'Discussions' posting suggests Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, should sing the title song for 'Skyfall'. I'm just disappointed she's not yet featured as a Bond girl, as I share the views of others that her beauty is second only to that of the late Grace Kelly. And the Bond producers also appear to have overlooked the stunning Swedish actress, Katia Winter.

Anyone know how I can get on the selection panel for Bond 24 ...???!

I totally agree. The Bond girls in the last 2 films have been a total waste. Camille and Vesper were a travesty of Bond girls... There is one appalling scene in CR where Bond and Vesper are at the beach, and it's another lingering shot of Craig in a swimsuit, while Vesper is in a terribly unsexy t-shirt... What an appalling sight. It's the Bond girls who should be in bikinis/or displaying their beauty in all their glory, not Bond turned into a sexual object... Camille was horrible too... Not one single shot of her looking like the sexiest woman on the planet... The last Bond girl worthy of that title was Jinx... From the neck down that is, and when she had her mouth shut... Gone are the days of Honey Ryder, Tracy, Goodnight, Tatiana, Jill Masterson... I really hope that in SF they put the Bond girls back in their places... aka being the most sexy women on earth, not boring complicated characters... So I hope Naomie Harris will gain some weight and not look like she need a good hamburger (= totally unsexy)... But with Marlohe seems great, so I hope they do her justice... But the thing she said in the press conference 'A complex character' really frightens me... We need sexy Bond girls back !! The only Bond girl that I can call a Bond girl in the last 2 films is Solange... the rest are a total waste.

its all the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia my friend... girls aren't built any differently today than they were 50 years ago.... the only difference in the films today compared to back then is that they aren't so much the helpless fawn anymore.

I am an old fashioned kind of guy. I like girls like Dink, Honey and Solitaire. Skeletons Girls like Camille simply aren't my style. That said, over the past 20 years, I've still counted five girls I wouldn't kick out of my bed:

Isabella, Femke, Sophie, Rosamund and Eva...

But I agree. There used to be a time when Bond girls were stunning, smoking hot, gorgeous ladies. Nowadays, they *just* want to be Bond's equals.

Ohhhh all kinds of yes. I found myself attracted to Vesper as well, but beyond looks. It correct in saying Vesper isn't like the classic Bond girls, and nor will she ever be considered one.. but people don't really consider Tracy all that classic of a Bond girl. There's no room for a bikini on top of a snow crested mountain.... ( noted: DC did say Tracy, but I don't agree :P )

But still, I'd go to bed with Vesper. Looks, attitude and straight humor, but the will for some fun buried inside.
  • So true, tom boys, ironing boards, fried eggs. One exception; Ms.Fields was gorgeous.

I just want a piece of fluff built for Bond's pleasure.

And where the pics boys of the ladies we want - you know it was going to happen to this thread...

Have you seen the beach scene with Vesper and Bond in CR ? I wasn't blind when I saw another shot of Craig in a swimsuit, while Green was in a dull t-shirt... Sorry but it's Vesper who should have been in a bikini instead of Bond turned into a sexual object... Sorry but I think the sexy Bond girls who are meant to be the most glamourous, sexy women on the planet are gone... Vesper was a travesty... Another unneeded, boring, unmemorable overly-complex girl. I seriously hope in SF they will put the Bond girls back in their place, meaning being the most sexy women on earth... I don't necessarely mean being a damsel in distress... but there need to be many shots very sexy and glamourous shots of Harris and Marlohe in SF... Most preferably in bikini, or in bed... but even if dress in very fashionable dresses, it's the girls who need the lingering shot of their beauty to please the male audience... Give us perfect camera angle, perfect lighting... But the girls need to shine like a a million suns... Tired of Bond girls like Fields, Camille, Vesper and co being farces and travesties of Bond girls... Time for the sexyness, the glamour, the beauty to return !! And also, '2 birds one stone' : Give us back the glamour, beauty and sexyness of the locations. Tired of close-quarters scenes with a few shots of the scenery to redeem themselves... In SF I hope the girls AND the scenery will be very elegant, beautiful and glamourous... Enough of Craig shirtless, give us the REAL beauty with Harris (gain a few pounds please), Marlohe and the locations !!
  • Why is there an obligation for Bond girls to be sexy or alluring etc, Vesper Lynd wasn't really that, but she was intelligent and sophisticated and a damn improvement on some of what came before her, Denise Richards, Halle Berry, etc. If any given Bond lady can keep the interest then she doesn't have to be Miss World or anything. We've had some god awful names in the past such as Tanya Roberts and Lois Chiles, who really did nothing apart from fill in some background, and more interesting types such as Maud Adams or Cary Lowell, who offer a bit more and are both attractive and possess a high level of intelligence and charisma

don't count on it then DaltonCraig... the sexist era of Bond took the train out of town during the Moore era - and it took up permanent residence far away, forever, during the Brosnan era..... i doubt we'll ever see it return.

i personally like my Bond girls to be self sufficient, and beautiful... not clones of Tanya Roberts.... "JAAAAAMES!!!" - gosh, you talk about a farce..

i do agree with what your saying partly... but we've had this discussion before - this isn't something that started with Craig's era... this started back with Moore after Connery departed, and it became a slow evolving process up through in Brosnan's tenure, where it finally reached it's destination...

but i don't disagree.. there is that dark male side of me that would like to see Bond slap a few around again :-O...... but i know that won't be returning anytime soon.. those days are long gone

I think Berenice Marlohe certainly has the look of Bond girls of yesteryear.

Just try these on for size:

;

    compared to...

;

  • She looks like she hasn't had enough sleep or just walked off the set of Attack of the Zombies or something @-)
  • Bérénice Marlohe looks like Caroline Munro or Sophie Marceau, but I'm not convinced by her talent. I'm French and I often watch French TV series, but I just don't know her. Do you really think she will be the leading lady of Skyfall ? She will just be another Solange or another miss Caruso. I hoped Helen McCrory would be the main James Bond girl of Skyfall, but it won't be here. It would have worked, been original, and have opened up new horizons.

Huh. About the former James Bond girls... Eva Green was wonderful, but before her, there were only Christmas Jones and Paris Carver who were real James Bond girls.. It's weak for 16 years.

??Seriously?? So you basically just want a pretty face and sexy body, no substance or complexity in a Bond girl? I like Bond girls to have depth and not just be breasts and legs. That is why Eva/Vesper will always be my favorite. Eva has a perfect mix of mysteriousness, intrigue, sexiness, style, humor, and intelligence. These are also the traits of Vesper, which is surprising but the perfect role for Eva. She carried it well and she always kept me interested not only in her acting talent but her gorgeous form all throughout CR. The scene on the beach is one of the sexiest of the film alongside that wonderful black dress of hers and that red dress in Venice. The simple fact that Eva doesn't need all that horrid makeup to make her look passable gives me even more love for her. Eva is simply a natural beauty, and not a "Solange" whose only sexiness comes from showing off her body while being completely devoid of substance and depth. And you saw GE right? Did you miss Natalya/Izabella or something??

Are you having a laugh mate? Eva Green was amazing and gorgeous as Vesper. Extremely talented actress and very moving performance, up there with Diana Riggs. I agree that Olga Kurlylenko's character was a little underwritten but she did well with the role she was given. Move with the times mate. We dont live in the sexist 60's anymore. PS Craig most defintely is Bond.

Eva Green, the actress, is very gorgeous. Vesper, her character, was not. She was bland, dull, overly-complex, and missing the main element, IMO, of a Bond girl : the glamour/sexyness/beauty. Everytime I watch CR I am tired of the emphasis on the shots of Craig in a swimsuit. I would like the role reverse where it's the Bond girls we salivate about, not Bond. Bond for me isn't meant to be a sexual object. The only time where Vesper was gorgeous was when she walks to Bond in the casino in the purple dress. Apart from that, she's a travesty of a Bond girl.

So Eva is gorgeous as a woman, but when she plays Vesper in CR, looking exactly the same mind you, she isn't? I will never understand your logic here and I hope it isn't due to your rough opinion of Dan as Bond. Dan was focused on to give something for the female viewers, not just for the fun of it. I understand the idea of it. And compared to those mere bits with Dan we get the Ocean Club girl, Solange falling out of her dress, and of course the sexiest Bond girl of all, Vesper to top off this wonderful film. I see nothing to complain about. P.S.: That isn't a challenge!!!

What did you all think of the two Bond girls in QOS having short hair? I found it a little odd that they both had similar hair cuts.

No, but Bond girls are. There ain't enough flesh on those bones anymore. Vesper looked so petite you could break her in half if you made a wrong move in bed.

Like automobiles, Bond girls should be built to last.

  • I can't even remember anything about QOS, just walking out of the theater in a huff and demanding my money back :|

You must mean Arterton and Kurylenko. I don't really care much if any Bond girl has long hair or short hair, but I did take exception with License To Kill when Bouvier got all snazzed up and dressed for the part after meeting Dalton, I much prefered her with the long hair at the Bimini Bar, and she looked no less professional than before having it cut

I guess it's similar to hair color, and blondes and all and who likes what. I'm more generally interested in plot development and action in a James Bond film than a woman's head

I do think that the Bond films should bring back some beautiful girls that are of the disposable pleasures calibre because women of that type do exist. I'm all for women being portrayed more realistically and that the modern woman should not be ignored but there are women in this day and age that are latter day versions of their golden age counterparts.
  • I remember saying before that would it really hurt to at least go for one year and just omit any Bond girls from a release, it's only because It's james bond that people feel there is an obligation to include Bond girls into it, it's only recently they have had more of a hands-on approach and become more than just eye candy or cardboard cut outs masquerading as actresses, but I feel it wouldn't kill anyone just to try one time and leave out any female involvements in this capacity for a change, it wouldn't do any harm to the film by it and may actually enhance it for a one off try

After All, if Moonraker can have Bond without his Walther, Dalton without actually killing anyone by means of it, Die Another Day without a title song, QOS without a proper Gunbarrel, CR without a proper teaser, FYEO without a proper villain, and CR again without Q or Moneypenny than why not a future release without any Bond girls

I should of been asking this way at this point in time of AVTAK, Moonraker or Die Another Day really, but it's not good crying over spilt milk

I'm guessing you are one of those Bond fans that only saw it once and at the theatre, never giving it another chance at a different time in your life. Just plain sad.

Vesper a "travesty of a Bond girl"... yeah right. Even coming from DC007 that's a bit much.

I thought they were all beautiful. :-?
  • Yes, it's true I only saw it once and I think that was enough, I remember full well at the time how disappointed I was and maybe watching it again, my opinion could change but not by a significant amount. There's really nothing sad about it, I just didn't like the film

Furthermore if I was to give it a second viewing I would never get past the theme music and credits intro, unless I just turned off audio or left the room or something. It's not an issue with Craig here, just the whole finished product and it remains for me one of the most forgettable Bond entries ever

She has no boobs, she's as thick as my pinky finger... A beam of light can go through her... a profile look at her body, and she's almost invisibly due to being so thin....

Murino may have boobs, but she still looks like she needs a good meal...

Camille was horrible too... Not one single shot of her looking like the sexiest woman on the planet...
    *facepalm*

You know perfectly well that Camille served a particular function of the story - to show what future awaited Bond if he took revenge for Vesper's death. To sexualise her would only have ruined that aspect. And even if that would not have destroyed her character, there was nowhere in the film where wearing a bikini would have been appropriate.

Yawn.... How many times to you have to explain the films to everyone ? I *perfectly* understand Camille's purpose in QOS, doesn't mean I have to like it. For me Bond girls are meant to be the sexiest, most glamourous and beautiful women on earth. I do NOT care for overly complex, boring, unneeded, dull, lifeless Bond girls like Vesper, Fields or Camille. I want more Tatiana, Honey Ryder, Miss Goodnight... I want the Bond girls to fulfill their roles of being the sexiest women on earth. Tired of Bond girls taking too much place, and steering away from their primary objective - be sexy.

And Camille was just so unsexy, dear I say repulsive in QOS. She was skeletic, and her scar on her back was just horrible. By the looks of her lingerie photos I can see on Google, Kurylenko is a very hot woman... Why they didn't use that to make her an incredibly sexy Bond girl, I have no idea.
