I still feel a powerful song would have been perfect. Yes, I understand the relevance and nuance and perhaps "specialness" of having a romantic song ... but I still would have preferred a different route; stronger, more punch. All in all, it will be okay.

Hopefully when the film has bedded in this song will become synonymous with it. I honestly think it will have a lasting impact over time.

Me too, I think it's a brilliant song, and after seeing the film who knows what
Emotional ties it will have for fans.

if the film treads heavily on the song's themes I am one happy fan, I loved the themes of Casino Royale

Maybe that's the reason the theme has such great orchestration, as it's
to be used throughout the film?
  • Been avoiding this place as much as possible in the lead up to SPECTRE. But decided to drop in. (The radiation shields should be okay for a minute or two.)
I quite like WOTW by Sam Smith. It has that certain Bond quality to it. Sounds like a Bond theme when I listen to it. Personally I'd like the return of an orchestral piece like OHMSS, but this is fine. If you'll forgive me, I think some people read far too much into things. Dissect every little shred of information. When Cubby and Harry started the Bond films, I don't think they meant for them to be so complicated or thought provoking. Just good entertainment.

I like it a good deal more after seeing the video, that's for sure. It works better in its shorter form, I think.

After seeing that video and having listened to the song countless times already I'm now certain it will make my Top 5 of best songs ever.
The only ones I can't see never making way for WOTW are A View To A Kill, Goldeneye and You Only Live Twice.

Of course nothing will ever beat the OHMSS theme.

Its interesting that this song has divided opinion so much but yet, so many from either side of the fence end their posts with
    "of course nothing beats OHMSS"
    (including myself)

OHMSS is just so ridiculously iconic and embodies the magic of music. Barry wasn't playing around.

I also think that the Propellerheads cannot be thanked enough for doing that re-make of the theme which is over 9 minutes long (or over three if you prefer the radio cut).
It is almost 20 years old now, imagine that.

That re-make of the theme probably got OHMSS a lot of new fans from new generations.

I'm happy to see that many have been converted to the side of the faithful after seeing the video. That truly is great news.

I won't be watching the video as I don't want my enjoyment to be spoiled any further. I should have actually held out on hearing the song until film night (like some of the brave) and I'd then still be in enthusiastic puppy heaven. Sadly, what's done is done.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this '2 for 4' romance thing with DC is his business. When it's all said and done, his 'era' will have more of an emo aspect to it. I think we've come to the end of it now thankfully ('2 for 4' and actually '3 for 4' if you consider QoS was grieving......or even '4 for 4' if one considers some Freudian elements to his M relationship). They really will have to watch it from here on out if they don't want it to turn into full on schmaltz. DC himself has probably run his course with this...

Anyway, glad some of you like it. I look forward to seeing and hearing everything in the theatre.

God damn this movie is going to be amazing, everything is amazing. Even Daniel Craig's body language is probably his coolest here.
  • The visuals go really well with the song. This film is looking better and better all the time. I really like the shot of
the Rolls Royce driving through the desert
    .
It has a certain timeless quality to it. Breathtaking. Epic.

Sam Mendes is capable of doing such timeless classics that will stand the test of time.
Sadly Skyfall was (imho) his weakest film so far. But I'm certain now, that he has learned so much from that experience that he was able to do so much better with SP.

Now only the story could hinder SP to become the best Bond movie ever. As I don't have much faith in P+W anymore this is a real fear I have.

I think you cant discount SF if you want to include Bond's love life. He loved M IMHO (in a motherly way) and, unlike OHMSS, we see him weep. so 4 from 4 bondjames,
I agree with your overall sentiments.

    So true.

But because OHMSS is an instrumental, I have never classified it as a "Bond Song." For OHMSS, "We Have All the Time in the World" is considered the Bond song. The right decision was made to use Barry's theme in the title sequence.

For me that weeping scene of Bond for his mother is one of the greatest sins that ever happened in this franchise. I wish it could be undone, because it is just wrong.
IMHO of course, I know some (many?) people liked Bond crying.

I don't think they were tears. He had just climbed out of a frozen lake. His face was obviously still wet and it was lake water running down his cheeks.

Would you ever consider recording another Bond theme? Many of us feel that they badly need to rediscover their “oomph” – and you’re the man to do it.

    05 October 2015 12:36pm

Yes. With the right song, yes. I think the songs are different now though. When I recorded Thunderball, it fit Sean Connery. It was a macho song for a macho James Bond at the time. I like Sam Smith and I'm looking forward to hearing his song.

What’s your favourite Bond theme (other than Thunderball)?

    05 October 2015 12:24pm

Goldfinger. From Russia With Love is good too - all the early themes are great. Shirley Bassey had her do a song for Thunderball, but didn't like it - so they wrote a song called Thunderball for me. Still had the Welsh flavour.

Completely agree with Tom. Sometimes 'the old ways are best'

    Love TB in every way

Just watched the video and found it very good to be honest. Have to say that i was pleased their was no action sequences contained within it. Lets see them in their full glory in a few weeks time.
