I did have one more question.... Are there any sharks with lasers?

But seriously, suitably over the top baddie lair? (Complete with 'colour coded' uniforms?)

    Empire drops their review...
    http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=138905

i guess they will only give BOND 5 stars when a certain Nolan directs!
... Or they just didn't consider it a 5 star film? Nolan has nothing to do with it...

Its just that they seem to always give Nolan films five stars...
    Batman Begins
    The Dark Knight
    Inception
    The Dark Knight Rises
Interstellar (which only sits at 71% on rotten tomatoes)

Not a single Craig Bond film has received a 5 star rating from EMPIRE. Not even CR.

The fourth paragraph in the review is short of a catastrophic verdict. I guess the rest kind of makes up for it otherwise it would not get 4 out of 5 stars.

Well, I'm done reading reviews, they make me worried and nervous and I don't want to stumble onto big spoilers 5 days before I get to see Spectre.

So I'll be gone, bye bye, so long, take care people, and be good boys (and girls) and don't forget to drool all over Spectre once it's released :))

    Until, whenever...
    Yours, Jason

Dear Jason :-). Sometimes you sound more...gay than I am. Seriously, the Empire Review is excellent, like the magazine describes with a 4-star rating.

    ■ ■ ■ ■ □, Empire Magazine: "Full marks to Mendes, Craig, Waltz, Fiennes and the location finder.":
    http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=138905

And now let's compare, especially for you @BondJasonBond006, this review with Empire's reviews for Craig's previous three Bond films:

    "CASINO ROYALE":
    ■ ■ ■ ■ □, Empire Magazine: "Daniel Craig has done more with James Bond in one film than some previous stars have in multiple reprises.":
    http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=10199

    "QUANTUM OF SOLACE":
    ■ ■ ■ ■ □, Empire Magazine: " The only real caveat is that while it’s exciting and imaginative, it’s not exactly anyone’s idea of fun.":
    http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=134523

    "SKYFALL":
    ■ ■ ■ ■ □, Empire Magazine: "Cool but not camp, respectful of tradition but up to the moment, serious in its thrills and relatively complex in its characters.":

Reviews so far are on the positive side. The most negative ones I've seen were from fans that saw a preview. They were disappointed.

I just wonder if the film might be too long? Perhaps a tighter film may make for a more exciting experience. Just a wild guess.
Craig started his tenure as Bond by rebooting the character, restarting and re-defining it. It took the whole of 'Casino Royale' to harden and shape him, the whole of 'Quantum of Solace' to move on from the loss of Vesper, the whole of 'Skyfall' to set the familiar characters back in place and now, finally, with 'SPECTRE', Craig is properly James Bond at last.

If it's taken Craig four films to become James Bond - that doesn't suggest Eon/the writers have been a great success. Craig should be Bond from Casino Royale, surely? Not three films on! Sean connery was Bond from Dr. No. He wasn't a proper Bond from Thunderball. You could argue MI6's review - the last line - is a huge criticism of Craig's Bond (or the writers approach to his Bond)? Perhaps Craig isn't really much of a Bond so he's needed four films to get to be Bond. I dunno! Makes my head hurt thinking about it! :D

Another British mag/website drops a positive review (with some reservations)
    Total Film 4 stars
    http://www.gamesradar.com/spectre-review/

"Though not as dramatically rich or emotionally compelling as Skyfall, Spectre still ranks as a sleek, pulse-pounding if slightly overlong entertainment"

This though is the second review that says the Rome car chase is not that great. Also the acting of Seydoux and Waltz is not getting the praise I thought it would.

I'm fine with that. IMO, 5 stars should only be awarded for films that are perfect (or as near as can be), not something that can said of any of the recent Bond's (CR would get the closest, 4.5 I'd say)

I think a better way to but this would be - he's been James Bond from the start but he only became properly/classically 007 in SF/SP. And SP is the first "true" straight up classic-style Bond film of the era it seems, while the other three changed up the formula in some respects

That is probably the most overused statement in Craigs run. I have heard this comparison in EVERY SINGLE movie of his.

In Casino Royale he was not really Bond UNTIL the last scene...
In Quantum he finally became Bond... but again only in the last scene...
In Skyfall he FINALLY (again) becomes Bond as we know him, especially in the last scene...

Looks like Spectre is keeping with that tradition and Craig is finally becoming Bond (again) :)
  • Yeah, so, does anyone want to let us know about the gunbarrel? How does the score play out for it?
  • edited October 2015 Posts: 267
I really dislike the whole "Craig become Bond at the end of CR" or "at the end of QoS" or "in SPECTRE finally due to the nature of Skyfall" lines that seem to have littered the reviews of the Craig era films. I find it hard to believe that Craig's Bond in CR or QoS or SF was any less of a 'true Bond' than what we've seen in previous films whether we're talking about FRWL or DAD.

talking about the RT votes, you should consider that the reviews have usually a five votes votation template, from 1 to five, while RT has a 10 votes template plus the decimals. So, papers votes 3, RT registers it as 6, but it could be 6, 6.5, 5.9... So, don't overthink on it.

I'm surprised by the fact that a lot of people, here and out there are wondering about the Gunbarrel and no one about if there is Blofeld in the movie or not
  • Maybe this isn't the place to put it, but without giving too much away is there any mention of the events that occured in CR and QOS. I mean i'm not keen on them going over it again, but just wondering concerning Vesper and the Mr White connection?
  • I'm surprised by the fact that a lot of people, here and out there are wondering about the Gunbarrel and no one about if there is Blofeld in the movie or not

Some see one as more of a spoiler than the other, I would imagine.

I want to know about the gunbarrel, but want to be surprised about the inclusion (or not) of Blofeld when I'm at the cinema.

    Yes, I agree.

Color of baddies uniform is also something that I want to know as soon as possible.

True. But a few of the reviews have more or less given that away.

Based on reviews and what fans here tend to gravitate to imo SP may stand the test of time better than SF.

Well, people are aware that there are two options: Waltz is Blofeld, or he is simply the modern interpretation of Blofeld named Oberhauser.

People wondering about gunbarrel are wonderful fans, just read the topic concerning Skyfall Gunbarrel before the reviews with confirmation. It's detail, almost nothing, but very important and anticipated moment at the same time.

Personally, i love watching gunbarrel compilations analizying and watching how they evolved. In fact i made one myself on YouTube, and i love to watch it, very often :D I considered making new one, updated, and now i have big motivation - there will be new addition into the compilation! ^^

And even if I see comments with spoiler tags......I'm not opening them! How great is THAT :-D!

Just read thorugh endless tweets and can't say any notixceable negativity. Mostly very positive. They did it. I still think, people overall will like it better in the end, as it went back more to the Bond many wanted to see again.

#Spectre was a brilliant mix of contemporary and classic @007. Loved characters, humour and cinematography. Daniel Craig's best #Bond yet.
    Good interview

Agreed. We will also be watching SP in 4K in our home theatres in a couple of years, whereas (for me - the boring) SF will always be limited to max 1080p.

So, what about the Bond Theme? Do we get to hear it in its full glory this time during the film? :)
