  • Regarding Cruise, it seems "stars" in general are not as popular anymore. Actors don't open movies, everything's moving more towards brand name franchises and big CGI spectacle movies. All the A-list stars like Cruise, Will smith, Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio etc have all had duds in recent years. Then you get superhero actors like Chris Hemsworth who bomb in everything outside of Marvel movies.

    So very sad and so very true, unfortunately.

    That amazes me as Tom Cruise is a real star with his fans, even if he has some weird religious ideas.

    Cruise lost most though when he bounced on the sofa.

    Fans forgive him when he's Ethan Hunt but shun him otherwise.

    That's true. When he dumped Nicole and jumped on Oprah's chair it caused a lot of problems for him. Along with his religious beliefs. He was bulletproof before that. Oprah and her fans had way too much power at one time unfortunately.

    A bit unfair really, but an example of what the US media tends to do to people who are 'larger' than them. That's why I had a feeling they would massacre SP.......because SF was bigger than them.

    Having said that, not all of the criticism is unwarranted however. If the film had been better and more balanced, the narrative could have been much more positive from them, despite wrist slashing, Sonyleaks or Sam Smith. The film sort of played into their hands. It could have gone either way.......having seen it yesterday, I don't think there was a specific agenda. It's a polarizing film.

    I have to say though I enjoyed both MI and SP.

    I know this sounds negative especially since I enjoyed SP so but with the leaks, the increased budget, Craig's comments, and the competition and risks I'll be glad when this one is in the bag and I'm picking up my bluray copy.

    The comic series is starting off fantastic and that can be my Bond fix for awhile.

    The filmmakers and we the fans need to regroup. Need a diastole.

    Me too @mcdonbb.

    My expectations were exceeded with MI-RN because it was not heavily marketed and I knew little about the plot. Cruise had disappointed me with the family melodrama of MI3, so there was always a risk he would fail me again, but he certainly did not. It actually got better on my 2nd viewing in the theatre (due to the amazingly superb Rebecca Ferguson) and I'm really looking forward to the blu ray.

    I think SP will get better for me on repeat viewings as well, but it did not really exceed my expectations though. Having said that, it didn't fail either. It's a great, middle of the road Bond film for me, anchored by a very classic Bondian performance by Daniel Craig.

    Next time around, I hope they just dial it back, cut the budget and try to make a stripped down dark thriller focused on a superior story (a'la CR/FRWL). I think DC will really shine more in that kind of environment.

    I agree. I will see SP again in the cinema hopefully this week while the crowds are still fairly large.

    A simpler lower key outing next time would be nice. Good chance they might go that route ...historically they have after they have pushed the limit.

    Just please o please venture out with new writers.

    Hmmm, I disagree. I actually fully disagree. I thought "SPECTRE" was simply too "Bond-ian" for most people. Well, if that's the case, then "Rogue Nation" could be your film.

    For me personally Daniel Craig is a far more superior actor than Tom Cruise. He feels more "European" too me as well. More down-to-earth....in whatever kind of environment. Daniel Craig really gave me the laughs in "SPECTRE", wheareas the "M:I"-movies have improved a bit by shifting the focus away a bit from Tom Cruise, and move it more to towards the other "M:I"-team members. Benji in particular.

    Moreover, "SPECTRE" gets blaimed a lot for its...contrived plot in which S.P.E.C.T.R.E. has got 'tentacles' in every governmental institution. With all due respect, but during the start of "Rogue Nation" Ethan Hunt needs to explain 'us' with pictures, news articles, etc, that every recent disaster and terrorist attack was facilitated by the Syndicate. Not to mention the fact that the plot is basically a less dramatic version of the "Skyfall"-plot ( https://hmssweblog.wordpress.com/2015/08/02/the-hunt-for-bond-mi-connections-to-007/ ).

    And the RT ratings for "Rogue Nation" and "SPECTRE" are ridiculous. These would be my 'personal RT ratings" from the "M:I"-franchise and the "Bond"-franchise after 2004:

    95% --> "Casino Royale"
    95% --> "Skyfall"
    87% --> "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation"
    84% --> "SPECTRE"
    75% --> "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol"
    67% --> "Quantum Of Solace"
    65% --> "Mission: Impossible III

    But really guys:
    93% --> "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" ?????
    62% --> "SPECTRE" ?????
    I call ratings a result of some 'build-in American bias'. And I haven't even talked about IMDB yet.

    By the way, the opening weekend for "SPECTRE" is rather disappointing if you ask me:
    http://pro.boxoffice.com/latest-news/2015-11-06-north-america-thursday-night-report-spectre-guns-down-525m
    opening weekend estimates are now at: $72.5 Million. This is not a good sign for the longevity of "SPECTRE" at the box office in the USA. Its opening weekend is actually closer to "Quantum Of Solace" back in 2008: $68.0 Million.

    Our predictions -at least for the opening weekends- were s.h.i.t. this time around @bondjames :-(.
  • True, its coming in weaker than expected. Amazing how some countries had record breaking attendance, and much more positive reviews, and then the US kind of shrugs on both fronts.

    But its A- cinemascore matches Casino Royale so we'll see how the legs are. Nevertheless, its still the second highest opening ever in the US for a Bond film! If it weren't for SF's incredible numbers, we'd be looking at this completely differently right now. And SP opens all across Europe this weekend (plus Mexico) so we should be hearing about those numbers on Sunday, I have a feeling they'll blow away any meh-ness from the US.

    Our predictions -at least for the opening weekends- were s.h.i.t. this time around @bondjames :-(.

    Having seen the film yesterday, I revised my opening weekend estimate down to between $85m to $95m (probably closer to the bottom end) and my overall estimate for US box office to between $200m to $250m. This one won't have legs like CR & SF did. It will fall fast like QoS. Overall box office around the $850m to 950m mark (unadjusted).

    It's a decent enough film, and it doesn't deserve the low rating that it has at RT, but the issue is not with whether it is too 'Bondian' or not. Everyone can accept Bondian. It just has to be executed to perfection or close to perfection. This wasn't.

    The people who should be blamed are the writers and the people overseeing them before production began. The entire team (bar the writers) did a fantastic job with what they were given, particularly Craig and Mendes, (but also Seydoux and Waltz) providing us with a very visually stylish film with excellent performances from a stellar cast who were given a damn shoddy script.

    Daniel Craig probably feels more 'European' to you than Cruise because he is. Cruise is not, and he's not trying to be. He plays an American

    MI-RN is the better film, objectively speaking. It deserves its IMDB rating. The plot is tight, the action is off the charts (although there is no Burj Khalifa moment) and the female lead is absolutely brilliant.

    SP deserves a higher rating than it got. It should be in the mid-70's imho, closer to its current user rating.

    I'be been reading forum posts elsewhere from people who have been posting early estimates for the BO for SP in their homeland countries.
    What i've seen so far, from Italy, Germany, Russia and Hong Kong, is that SP is doing very well, but slightly behind SF's figures.........apparently most of this is down to the current exchange rates into dollars, which is not as favorable at the present time, as it was for when SF was in theatres.
    I was told, that for SP to beat SF, in Australia, when it opens next week, will be a very tall order, as the AUD is weak against the USD at present!
    Anyway, in a days time we will have the International figures in.

    Yes, we discussed this a few months back on this thread. That was always going to be a problem, which is why the US & China had to come in big for it to meet SF.

    right now, boxofficemojo projects Spectre to open in the US right around $82 million.. as the writer of this article said, he's calling Spectre the Age Of Ultron to Skyfall's Avengers... he also factored in that the Peanuts Movie opened along side of Spectre, which means (obviously) some parents with kids probably opted to see that movie with their kids, and possibly pushed their viewing of Spectre to another time.

    but i agree with what others have said about a stripped down CR type film next... $300+ million for Bond budget seems crazy, and i think they need to scale back a bit for the next one... if rumors are true that one of the writers for the TV show Mad Men was penning the next Bond script, then I am optimistic... the series needs fresh blood.

    True. they may do a soft reboot / change in tone for the next one, they seem to do it every 4 or so films for various reasons. A TV drama writer would be great, they have fantastic stories and scripts.

    As for comparing the RT rating - I find it most unsettling that Spectre comes in at #17 among all the Bond Movies - below NSNA and QOS. WTF?
  • Another 26.6-27 million this Saturday, keeping 73-74 target.

    What it´s a bit strange is that Deadline estimates a 27.5 million Friday and other sites are reporting 28 million.

    As 'Deadline' mentioned, one good thing that will work for SP is that next weekend in North America, there arn't any new big releases, so Bond should still be able to do very strong business in that market! Its after next weekend, when we see the percentage drop in takings, that we will really be able to gauge what SP's likely BO will be in North America.
    I hope it will be at least $250 mil!

    You've hit the nail on the head here............i agree..........this has been the real problem with the Bond films of recent times........ie they should get their product sorted out first, then go and book a release date.....BUT they don't do that coz its all about making money.....and not about giving the public an excellent product!

    Have heard that SP is doing very well in Germany with admissions expected to reach 1.9 million, for opening weekend.
    In the UK Bond was still going strong during in its 2nd week workdays with daily grosses of around $3.5 mil
    By the end of Wednesday SP in the UK had grossed around £48.7 mil ($73.1 mil)
    This weekend Friday wasn't as good as for SF with an estimated £3.5 mil ($5.25 mil), as that particular day when SF was playing was a holiday........anyway SP still expected to have a very strong 2nd weekend.........and should be i guess somewhere around the mid $90's mil, by end of Sunday!
  • That's good for the UK weekdays considering most kids were back in school. I think you mean Thursday, Nov 5 was Guy Fawkes day, probably not much movie attendance that evening.

    No...........actually SP grossed £5.5 mil on Sat in the UK i.e ($8.25 mil).

    SP heading towards a possible $19-20 mil second weekend in the UK?
