I'm surprised the regime allows the release of Bond films. Great that they do though...it means more success and profit for the franchise.

I'm, again, very very happy that "SPECTRE" gets such a wonderful release date. Just think of how "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" had to wait 2 months

If one's surprised that China allows James Bond films then one doesn't know China.

Believe it or not, we exist. Not only that, but we can speak your damn language too.

Why would you want to speak our damn language? :)

@w2bond None of the English films over here are dubbed thank god.

Oh, I said LING LING QI to some Chinese I had dinner with last night and they all knew. I'm sure most have heard of 007 if you say it in Chinese. Some know when you say it in English.

I remember the Skyfall release date for Korea being listed for a November release on one of these websites, maybe IMDB, when I was over there at the time but then a mere few days before it started screening in the cinemas in Korea I learnt that it was coming out the same day as in The UK which was a nice surprise

Yes, that was a very nice surprise! I was working in Seoul when Skyfall came out and was thrilled to discover I would get to see the new James Bond film a whole two weeks earlier than I would have had I been living in the States at the time.

Yeah, it was fantastic. Suddenly, I thought, damn, I can go and see this in 2 days time when I thought that I'd be waiting another week or two after the UK release! The first time was in Megabox on a smaller screen in Jeonju. The second time, in Seoul, on the big CGV screen. Looked better at CGV which is a newer cinema. I wonder if SPECTRE will be out in Korea on the same date as The UK.

I'd be quite interested to know which Bond fans have seen a new 007 flick for the first time in a country outside of their homeland. I was living in Denmark when I saw Goldeneye, Denmark again for Tomorrow Never Dies when I went back there for a holiday. QOS was in England, Skyfall in Korea and now Spectre in China.

    Any takers?

China's open to Western films (most big Hollywood films are released here) but in terms of Skyfall, the Chinese government did want the stuff to do with Solange and her prostitution edited out, or so I read. They're not keen on the likes of certain websites such as You Tube, Google and Facebook (the latter of which I don't use) though.

WELCOME @Makkankosappo!! So nice to meet a Chinese fan :-D!! Is your nickname related to....a possible Chinese Bond villain ;-)?? Just kidding hehe.

Welcome indeed, sir. Your thoughts on Kingsley Amis' Colonel Sun (1968) would be most appreciated!

I work (teach high school) in a community that is over 70 percent Asian-American (Sillicon Valley), a good chunk of those being recent immigrants from China. Not much knowledge of Bond. I do my best to educate them about the character. I manage to hook several every year.

Should start a lunch time activity: Bond marathon. They can learn english too :D

I'm not Chinese, nor am I a resident of China, but a while back, I did have the privilege of travelling to China as a guest of the Chinese government, along with a number of western colleagues.

To say that the Chinese government rolled out the red carpet was something of an understatement. In short, we were made to feel like visiting royalty.

One of my main enduring memories of this visit was turning out on my first evening there for a formal dinner, dressed in my best fitted tux, cummerbund, etc. and all the Chinese, dressed in their own formal dress, commenting... "Ahh... Chems Barnd, Chems Barnd.

It seems that those Chinese people knew their James Bond quite well. ;)

Well, over the past few days I have said "Ling, Ling Qi" to many Chinese people and they all know him and here was I thinking that a number of Chinese people hadn't heard of James Bond. I had originally said "James Bond" to them and a fair few of them didn't know, and I know I said it in English, but because it's a name and an iconic one at that, I would have thought that they'd have known. Problem solved. :)

I'll have to see this film in IMAX.

It's no different than if you said "cheng long" to your average American then concluded that Americans don't know who Jackie Chan did. Granted, China's awareness of western culture is greater than vice versa, but except for extremely westernized pockets not that much.

I see your point but I'm not sure if I'd quite go that far. The Chinese get English films with Chinese subtitles in mainstream cinema and they hear the name James Bond. Unless you are an American who goes to see Chinese films at film festivals, I don't think you will be seeing any Chinese films in mainstream cinemas. There were some Chinese people who knew "James Bond" when I said it in English. Also, James Bond is a huge, iconic fictional character. Jackie Chan is the name of an actor and Hollywood don't use his Chinese name.

Most people who learn English adopt an "English name". Sometimes they're complete nonsense, like "Vacation", “Smile" and the everpopular "Rainy." One of my students has been going by Stark because he's an Ironman fan. After Spectre he's changed it to "Bond". He asked me to call him 007 but I refused (he's 11).

I saw it in HK and on the mainland. The only thing I noticed edited in in the mainland version is at the Tokyo conference where you can see that China is one of the members of the "9 eyes". It's just as well, because that was a particularly idiotic idea.

Interesting that they edited on the mainland version and not in HK. They are really picky it seems.

For a 2.5hr film, if that was the only change, then it's ok I suppose.

Hong Kong and Macau always get unedited movies. Part of the deal with the UK and Portugal is that they enjoy Western style rights for fifty years.

Finally saw it in IMAX yesterday. Most enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised. The humour wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I suppose it helped going in knowing that it was going to be more lighthearted and maybe that I saw DAD a couple of days before. :) I was relieved to discover that there weren't any one liners following Bond killing someone or blowing something up or at least I don't remember any.

I still would have preferred it to have been darker and more serious but the humour in this film was better written I felt than what was done with SF. My only other major gripe is that it was a shame that they didn't develop the two Bond girl's characters more and the villain's. I would have liked Bond to have stayed at the villain's headquarters for longer in the last half of the film too. Felt a bit rushed.

Not much plot but then Bond films have never been known for great plots. Overall, a good Bond film. I will see it again in a couple of weeks. Maybe then I will be able to decide as to whether I think it's better than SF. It's certainly better than QOS but CR is still my favourite Craig Bond film.

So, the Chinese government edited in the sign that said "China" ? LOL. Remarkable.
  • Hi guys, i am another Chinese fan you are looking for. I have been in the forum for over 10 years. Looking around, finding interesting topics, but never really involve in the conversation. But once I saw this topic, I feel myself have to be in and start talking!

I was born in Shanghai China and now 28 years old. My first Bond film is TND in VCD format my father rent from the local store in 1998. It opened a wide door for me. Next one I watched was TB. The two different Bonds in their times are so cool that I became a fan immediately. Since then I have searched every corner of Shanghai to gather my own VCD collection, then evolved to DVD collection.

The first time 007 officially introduced to China is Casino Royale. I always remember the time I attended the premiere in Shanghai and met the cast on stage. Even if Daniel Craig was so far away and did not say a single word, I was a crazy boy down there in the seat. The time I saw the CR gun barrel on the silver screen it was like a dream come true.

OK my friends, feel free to ask me anything about China and 007 in China, I will try to explain everything I could. The pleasure will be all mine.

Here is the Spectre trailer with Chinese subtitle. The problem is, as a Chinese fan, you will always find subtitle is a miserable thing to look. Some translation are OK, but some are terrible

Interesting fact that I never get the chance to read Colonel Sun. It is too hard to find in China. But you can get plenty of Ian Flaming, John Gardener(my first read), Raymond Benson, Charles Higson...

These poster are from Taiwan, not China mainland.
I will try to translate them here.

    Spectre:
    [above 007] MI6 Chief, Mr. M
[below Spectre is the Taiwan translation] The Devil is around You "Er Mo Si Fu". (Personally I prefer China mainland version over Taiwan version. In China, it simply translates to "Spectre Organization" or "You Ling Dang"in Pinyin )

    Skyfall
[Headline] The cutting edge weapon is the huge power hiding under the normal appearance. (Don't understand why it shall have this line on the poster.)
[below Skyfall is the Taiwan translation] The crisis is falling "Kong Jiang Wei Ji" in Pinyin.
