I think Mendes and EON deliberately left the Bond/Swann relationship a bit vague. She may have said she loved him during the torture scene, but she was no doubt trying to help him somehow. I may be wrong but I think there was a line in an earlier script where Swann tells Bond in London at the moment when she leaves him, that she loves him but won't stay with him to watch him die. I think that declaration of love was cut, and if so it had to be for some deliberate reason. Bond also never tells Swann he loves her, so the relationship in SP is not at the level of the Vesper/Bond relationship in CR. There was some deliberate decision to keep the relationship more vague likely so that it could be easily jettisoned, or cranked up depending on what happens with Bond 25.

    Nicely put!

Yes, I pretty much agree with this.

Excuse me stewardess but I speak jive. :))

Anyway. Everyone should look at this and understand the scope of SP's success:

    Worldwide (Unadjusted)
Rank Title (click to view) Studio Worldwide Domestic / % Overseas / % Year
    1 Skyfall Sony $1,108.6 $304.4 27.5% $804.2 72.5% 2012
    2 Spectre Sony $754.2 $180.7 24% $573.5 76% 2015
    3 Casino Royale Sony $599.0 $167.4 28% $431.6 72% 2006
    4 Quantum of Solace Sony $586.1 $168.4 28.7% $417.7 71.3% 2008
    5 Die Another Day MGM $432.0 $160.9 37.3% $271.0 62.7% 2002
    6 The World Is Not Enough MGM $361.8 $126.9 35.1% $234.9 64.9% 1999
    7 GoldenEye MGM $352.2 $106.4 30.2% $245.8 69.8% 1995
    8 Tomorrow Never Dies MGM $333.0 $125.3 37.6% $207.7 62.4% 1997
    9 Moonraker MGM $210.3 $70.3 33.4% $140.0 66.6% 1979
    10 License to Kill UA $156.2 $34.7 22.2% $121.5 77.8% 1989

I don't care about inflation or whatever... SP is massively successful in comparison to recent Bond films. It's a home run. Maybe not a Grand Slam like SF but I would say at least one runner was on base, maybe two.

Yep! And guess what? I still think the Daniel Craig-era is a '2nd Golden Age' after the Connery-era being the '1st Golden Age' :-). Okay, people will call me 'pathetic' and 'a physical representation of exaggeration'. But I don't care. Time will tell how much important the Craig-era was/is for the Bond franchise. And SP further contributed to that. In a few years from now people will cherish the 'Craig Quadrilogy'.

Good point..............but i usually skip the main page nowadays, and just come straight to the forum.

With SP on $84,653,600 in China, and with just 2 days left of playing in theatres to go.......it looks like the film is gonna finish just shy of the $85 mil mark.
So, those Chinese BO experts who predicted SP would finish around $86 mil, were pretty damn close.
Anyway, its a new record for Bond in China, and with the Chinese getting further exposure to the franchise....it should bode well for future Bond films.

The best line in my view to explain this relatiionship was the Blofeld one "daughter of an assassin...the only one who could understand him.....shame". That to me nailed it because I understood why she liked him. She related....and as @mcdonbb suggests, plays into her 'daddy' issues (repressed). It's Bond's behaviour that wasn't properly explained in my view. Smith's song tries to do it instead....giving us the emotional perspective that we don't see from him in the film.

Agreed. The "daughter of an assassin" line landed. But I think this sentiment needed to come from Madeleine or Bond, not so much Blofeld. I did like the "Don't look" scene...probably the best scene that "sells" their relationship.

I disagree that there wasn't enough time for a love story; there was plenty of time in OHMSS, CR, and those are shorter films than SP. Also, Madeleine's story is tied to the villain's enough to give it time. It's a choice of focus that the filmmakers made.

    in the US

    friday estimate was $1.6 mil

saturday isn't out yet.. but i took how many came to see SP today at our theater - and extrapolated that out over the 2,840 theaters still showing it.. and based on my numbers, i think SP will probably be in the range of $1.6-$1.8mil for saturday..

sunday.. i'll be generous and estimate close to an even $1mil..

meaning my weekend estimate would put SP somewhere between $4.2-$4.5mil

Krampus is actually doing really well to my surprise... i think it will finish #1 this weekend.. but i dont know if it will have the legs to repeat next week... typically horror films are top heavy..

i still believe that if SP can stick around at least another month - month and a half, it will hit $200mil.... it's just going to be tough sledding though..

Early estimates say SP will make about 5.5 million this weekend in North America, 184.5 cume. I would like to know how the movie is working in Japan, but I am pretty sure that SP will have made over 780 million Worldwide at the end of this weekend.

One has to understand the new fall dynamic from Chinese governmental institutions to pile up all imported blockbusters very closely together.

If "SPECTRE" premiered 6 months earlier it wouldn't have that problem. And perhaps then it could easily gross well past the $130 Million. "SPECTRE" simply was a bit 'unlucky' in China.

Believe it or not, it has been compared by one French radio host to Marion Cotillard's death scene in TDKR :)

    "SPECTRE" now at:

    $184,520,343 - 23.3%: Domestic Box Office (USA+Canada)
    $084,653,600 - 10.7%: China Box Office
    $522,846,400 - 66.0%: Other Foreign Territories
    $792,020,343: GLOBAL BOX OFFICE (06.12.2015)
    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bond24.htm

"SPECTRE" has now passed "You Only Live Twice" on the inflation corrected 'Highest Grossing Bond Films' list, and will soon pass "Live And Let Die" as well. It is now only the 2nd post-1973-era Bond film (after "Skyfall") to do so :-):

Yep, and also important to note is that people tend to forget the film has been in release for a little over one month now (exactly one month in the USA).

What I find most fascinating now, is to compare the foreign box office (excluding USA, Canada anddd China) of "Skyfall" and the very end of its run with "SPECTRE":

$744,966,384: "SKYFALL" foreign box office (excluding USA, Canada & China)
    (after 4 months in release)

$522,846,400: "SPECTRE" foreign box office (excluding USA, Canada & China)
(after 42 days in release, a little over 1 month)

SP is gonna end up with a very good worldwide gross...........just a shame that the film didn't have that sparkle, to of enticed non Bond fans to of seen the film.
Whichever way you look at it, the North American gross is dissappointing.....a final gross of $200 mil +/- 5 mil is pretty much more than likely now.
Even if that does happen, SP will still only be on a par with QOS, and admissions wise still well below all of the Pierce Brosnan Bonds, and a long, long way off SF.
Can't understand why such an ordinary and dull Bond film such as TWINE, could of outperformed SP in North America. :-O

Great achievement. BTW LALD grossed $126.4 millions worldwide (according to IMDb and MI6.com) which now are $677.275 millions. This means that SPECTRE already passed LALD but on the other hand YOLT's gross adjusted to 2015 values (and not 2011 values as 007james.com does) stands at $795.049 millions... so SPECTRE is still fifth but it will be the fourth Bond out of 24 to earn more than 800 million dollars, in a few days. :)
  • Good News, 850 million Worldwide and 200 million in North America seem likely. In a very difficult year like 2015, SP will be 6th-7th Worldwide and 10th in USA & Canada.

An extract from 'Deadline' of the International BO performance of SP this weekend.

"007 aimed at his final market this frame with Japan spying a three-day weekend of $3.7M on 583 screens. Including previews, the cume is $6.9M. In total in 94 markets, Spectre added $23M on 9,900 screens. After six weeks in release, the total is $607.5M on the Eon/Sony/MGM 24th Bond. Germany continues its great run with a 35% drop in weekend 5 for a total of $60.9M; France fell 47% in its 4th weekend to bring the cume to $32.8M; the UK dipped 44% for $139.7M to date; and Australia slipped 38% to cume $20.9M. In the Netherlands, folks just can’t get enough of the superspy with the movie at No. 1 for six straight weeks. The total is $17.2M. China is at $84.5M with the run essentially complete".
