  • Gatiss is a fanboy so no. We want someone who respects the genre and series, yes. But NOT a 'fan': we can all do fanfic ffs!

Mendes makes sense IF Craig stays and there is a sense of trilogy completion via 'that' villain /girl. If not? he has said all he needs to say..but a third COULD fuse the motifs and styles of Skyfall and Spectre nicely..dark start..buoyant finish and Craig ends as he started..

Failing Mendes? I loathed Sicario. Loathed it.

So: my nominations..not all auteurs..many ARE just journeymen as perhaps that IS what the series needs (nb Campbell was and is just that btw).

Phillip Noyce. Roger Michell. Mike Newell. John McTiernan. Stephen Hopkins. Roger Donaldson. David Fincher. Jon Favreau. Steven Spielberg. Chris McQuarrie. Brad Bird. Stephen Frears. Duncan Jones. Guy Ritchie. (IF Sam Mendes backs out, that is!).
  • they returned to P/W coz Logan stuffed up big time..esp with THAT twist!

It depends. There are fans and there are fans. If you know the literary and cinematic inside out, but still understand how to be objective and not a slave to source then you could be on to a winner. Hardcore fans actually have the best insight because the canvas is much broader and infinitely more authentic, it's then about building boundaries, whereas those who masquerade as fans, ie those who know the broad brush strokes, are limited in scope. The trick is finding someone who can marry the two.

...yes Logan was the first mistake BUT that could have been corrected.

....why return to P&W? Mendes wasn't satisfied with what they did with SF so enter Logan ..now reversed.

But why?!? You're spending over 300m dollars. I'm an administrator and one of the best things I do is recruit the right people.

So again why hire back someone you essentially replaced to finish the original job?

  • Gatiss has MOMENTS of GENIUS and would be a good Dr Who showrunner. But his Sherlock stuff IS just jumped up fanfic..seriously..WHY do people rate Sherlock so highly? And it even nicked 'blunt instrument' AND that skyfall shot over London ffs!

I think P/W CAN be great..even still. Skyfall as a title = theirs and it DID help in the film';s success. TWINE DIES have a solid core plot ditto DAD..they were spoiled by poor execution..hence the Mendes era is about doing the P/W stuff RIGHT.

Agreed: new blood needed that is not P/W OR Logan.

Remember the basic hook for Skyfall = a Peter Morgan idea. and he would have done GREAT things with the surveillance state stuff in SPECTRE.

Problem is big writers need big money! and even then it's no guarantee of a hit.

    But:
    Tom Cain
    Boris Starling
    Anthony Horowitz
    David Mamet
    David Hare
    Steven Zaillain
    David Koepp
    Clark Gregg
    Richard Curtis
    Carrie Fisher
    Tom Stoppard

    and..me..

all suit the part..esp in a team..one for plot..one for story motifs..one for one liners etc..but in concert not in stages or conflict!
  • Let's face it. Broccoli and Wilson will jump at the prospect of bringing Mendes back for a final film. I'd say it was odds on, money no object. The only problem is Mendes other commitments.
  • I'd love Mendes to do a third (huge fan of his films). I am still waiting for SP to open so can't really comment on some of the negative issues that have been cropping up in reviews concerning the screenplay. However I did read (can't confirm if true or not) that during pre-production Mendes did try and quit because he was so unhappy with the screenplay. The sony leaks only further highlighted the issues that they were having with the screenplay. I think this aspect plus the comments made by Craig in the press are having a much bigger impact and resulting in more negative reviews. It was Mendes who returned because he believed that the story he wanted to tell was interesting enough. There is a difference in the end to the initial story and then the way in which it is written for the screenplay. I honestly believe that Mendes will want to return only if he has a solid screenplay to begin with considering the headache that he was faced with during the pre-production process on SP. i even think the delayed start was also so that Jez Butterworth could salvage what Logan, Purvis and Wade had come up with. That last sentence is only speculation.

Sure. If EoN don't slack the leash they put on him and he can keep his pretentious urges in his pants thus giving us a similar ride to SP, then why not.
  • hire someone who can retcon THAT twist whilst keeping the core quality of the film which IS great..i truly believe that the twist should have been axed and it is that which is sullying the film's overall reception.

According to a survey of "Spectre" moviegoers on Fandango:
    · 96% are glad that "Skyfall" director Sam Mendes returned for "Spectre";

  • i am glad he returned, too! It's a GREAT viewing experience as a film. I just HATE that 'twist' and choose to ignore it as non canon ;)

I'm up for him returning, both SF and SP are different films, they inhabit the same world but the shifts are not jarring, it seems a natural progression. The Bond in SP was emerging in SF, it's subtle but it's there.

I naively thought SP would be SF2 and it absolutely isn't, and as you say the leap isn't jarring, it's different but also feels like a natural progression. I'm now intrigued to see what he can do with a third. For all its humour SP has a haunted quality too it, I'd love the next to be even more bizarre.

Couldn't have put it better myself, It's not like they've made a Moore films here, they are still exploring things that feel natural in the Craig world it's just he's the Bond many of us have been waiting for without the baggage. I don't think the Craig era is ever going to be free of the dark side of the character but for Bond to be as ruthless and carefree there is always going to have to be that quality,

Bizarre is definitely something they can build on, like you say it does have a haunted quality to it. I can't quite get those who said Waltz was phoning it in. Yes you could see a touch of Hans Landa, especially in the bit where he laughs and say's "I've really put you through it haven't I" in the London climax. Though I think they've been very fortunate to secure him in that role.

Mendes said Bond is rebooted again at the end of Skyfall, Skyfall is very much a Pheonix from the flames story he is reborn. In Spectre, he's wiser, smarter, more confident and more ruthless. . He has now become more like the Bond of old.

While I loved SP, I'm itching to get some different talent behind the camera for 'Bond 25.' I'm ready to see what a different director can do with the series now that Mendes has had two chances to direct. I can think of plenty of directors I'd like to see given a chance, and would much rather hope for some of them to tackle it than Mendes for a third time.

I'm not sure yet. There are things that I really like about Mendes' films and things I don't (for one thing, I was onboard with Newman and SF until I heard his lazy recycled soundtrack for Spectre, almost a temp track--seriously, Barry would *never* have done that).

The weakness of Mendes' films appears to be the scripts. He had plenty of time to get it right for SF and a year less for SP and I still feel that there are major script weaknesses.

If Bond 25 is Craig's last film, I say they try to bring back Haggis as screenwriter.

I agree and now in the interviews Mendes seems to be wanting to do something else.

@mcdonnb, he seemed the same way after SF, though, and look how that turned out. I really won't be surprised if he returns to do his third, but I hope that isn't the case.

I thought that until I saw the Charlie Rose interview.

I mean I really don't know ..certain though he will be offered a chance.

I've enjoyed what Mendes has done but I think it's time to move on to someone else. Perhaps bring back Martin Campbell to bookend what he's started and finish off Craig's run. :)

I prefer the DB5 any day over a Mendes.

    :D

Only if Mendes can find a remaining Casino Royale character he can bring back and kill off dramatically. Perhaps the comely blonde from the Ocean Club?

I definitely don't want Mendes for Bond 25. I would have almost zero enthusiasm for another Sam Mendes film. He's a good director, but not my cup of tea when it comes to Bond.
