I had forgotten just how fantastic this one is. The theme song is legendary and its implementation is incredible. It goes from a catchy pop-rock number by Duran Duran to the magnificent "Wine With Stacey", which is one of the most romantic pieces ever written by Barry. I love all of the leitmotifs actually. This one really has it all. Every scene is perfectly scored. Well, except for California Girls perhaps. Even that doesn't bother me as much as most people, it would seem.

Personally, I feel that this is his best work since the 60's. It's one of his best scores period.

    A View To A Kill, 1983

    1. Implementation of the Theme Song – 10 (Bond entered the eighties late but with a bang with this classic from Duran Duran. And morover, it sounds epic when played by the Barry's orchestra!)
    2. Use of Bond Theme – 10 (Instead of the classic version, Barry creates an epic orchestral variant combined with rocking guitar solos. And WOW! It works awesomely)
    3. Style – 10 (Barry experiments again bringing a basically orchestral score with some tads of rock. And it, well, rock).
    4. Romance – 8 (It works nicely, with slowed versions of the main theme).
    5. Excitement - 10 (You kidding? This one is one of the best action socres of a decade where 'excitement' was the first thing the composers thought when working on action movies. Besides, this is a sountrack that actually improves the movie!!!).
    6. Brass – 7 (more string-driven than brassy. It still has its moments)
    7. Suspense – 9 (same with all Barry scores. This comes with the name)
    8. Iconography – 10 (this is a really, really iconic score from 80s cinema, from the theme song to the last note it's Barry keeping his style while updating it almost effortlessly)
    9. Epicness – 9 (just listen to "Snow Job" for the first time, or the instrumental of the main theme when Bond rescues Stacy from the burning City Hall nad try to tell me it's not epic).
    10. Timelessness – 10 (a classic of the 80, the top note wants to reflect that it's timelessly because it's, IMHO, an essential score to understand cinema in the eighties)

Overall: 93%. A real added value to a good but forgettable film (if you're not a Bond fan, that is), the song almost makes it a darn action classic of its decade!!! There are very few films that can proclaim this!

Like AVTAK this one gets 100% by me. I consider TLD to be the best score of the franchise, closely followed by AVTAK and OHMSS. These 3 I'd rate 10/10.

I'm definitely isolated on this one.

I'm with you on this one. Its not my favourite Barry score for a Bond film. Its let down in my opinion by some of the dated action cues. Not a great fan of the music during the "action" of the PTS for example. So here goes -

    1. Implementation of the Theme Song – 8
    2. Use of Bond Theme – 7
    3. Style – 5
    4. Romance – 7
    5. Excitement – 5

    8. Iconography – 5
    9. Epicness – 5
    10. Timelessness – 4

Its has some great moments but on a whole is my least listened to Barry Bond score.

The last Barry score? Damn. What a joy it has been to listen to all of his contributions
over the past few months. His last effort is a good one but it's definitely his most "80's" sounding. This could be a good or a bad thing depending on your point of view. There were three songs written for the soundtrack that Barry (once again) effortlessly weaves into the score. Of the three, a-ha's "The Living Daylights" definitely sounds the most dated. I actually like it though.

"Where Has Everybody Gone" by The Pretenders is a nice addition but I think that Barry might have overused that melody a bit over the course of the film. It starts to get a little tiresome by the time we're in Afghanistan. "If There Was A Man" is a really nice romantic theme and plays perfectly over the end credits. There are plenty of suspenseful moments throughout and some great classic Barry brass thrown into the mix.

    The end of an era.

    Licence To Kill, 1989

    1. Theme Song – 7 (Not bad but for a Bond song? I dunno.)
    2. Use of Bond Theme - 8 (Kamen did well.)
    3. Style – 8 (Hey, it's Die Hard / Lethal Weapon but nevertheless befitting the late 80s Bond somehow.)
    4. Romance – 8 (I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I like the Patty LaBelle song and I like what Kamen brings to this score in terms of romance.)
    5. Excitement - 8 (Some great action moments!)

    7. Suspense - 8
    8. Iconography – 6
    9. Epicness – 6
