I agree with Cubby's initial assessment of George. The way he walked, like when he enters the casino, it exudes swagger, confidence, he looks so damned comfortable in his own skin. Just like Connery.

Sean Connery liked and respected George Lazenby. He would also defend him against accusations of arrogance, saying he was nothing of the sort, but he couldn t say the same about Cubby...

PS. Just so you know, @stun_harvesting, from someone who remembers the Lazenby/Connery/Moore switchovers - Moore went on record at the time saying Lazenby going before him made his job easier. If he'd followed directly in Connery's footsteps (OHMSS) he believes audiences might have reacted badly to him, too. Not that OHMSS was a flop, mind.

    Interesting.

Mmm not to make George less special but Sean liked all his succesors as far as I remember.

The only one Bond performance he didn't like much at the beginning was Roger Moore but he latter changed his tune and very diplomatically said he was just different but still good.

In a Los Angeles Times article Lazenby addressed that comment and said he and Connery had actually never met!

In another interview he said they had met in a restaurant. Was it in Some Kind Of Hero?
  • I recall Connery made a comment that was clearly to spite Broccoli (something about Lazenby not being arrogant but Broccoli being just that), and Lazenby later said that they had hardly met.

Lazenby says they first met in a restaurant. Lazenby had a newspaper article on him that said he was a better Bond than Connery. He showed it to Connery, who just gave him a puzzled look. When Connery left, he came over and said "See you some other time."

He later saw Connery in a restaurant again, where Connery waved at him, and he also greeted him friendly at a tennis match. At least this is what Lazenby himself has said. He could of course be misquoted, that happens all the time.

And is there any real reference of Connery talking about Lazenby or OHMSS?

Showbiz.com claimed that Sean Connery is still angry that he was replaced as Bond.

Sounds like a serious and reliable source who really know their Bond history.

Can't find the link, but that wouldn't be an opinion about Laz or OHMSS, it would tell more about Broccoli and Saltzman... as usual, from Sean's point of view.

No, it would say more about Showbiz.com. They mixed up Connery and Brosnan.

Perhaps it's because they're so much alike. ;)

Yes, of all the Bonds, Lazenby was the greatest "Oddjob".

He definitely had some swagger that Laz. So natural too. No problems in the charisma dept. whatsoever.

Agreed. Even Connery had problems and struggles and doubts with getting the hat rack scene right. Lazenby just nailed it as if it was among his regular routines of the day.

    That's pathetic.

Sean takes longer than Terry Griffiths to aim his shot whereas Laz doesn't even break stride and the hat is already on its way almost before he even has time to see the target. Legendary.

I do love George Lazenby's Bond. Still my personal third favorite following Connery and Craig.

GL was one of the bigget idiots of the 20th Century. He wasn't a young and Naive 17 year old. He was over 30. Your thrust into the most famous film role on the earth at the time (must have been stressful) and offered a fortune to continue in the role over a period of time.
Even if the latter films would have flopped and killed the series then he'd have still made a lot more money and had more security than for starring in dodgy martial art films (apart from TMWTGG LOL) and Hawaii 5'O.
Lazenby starred in Hawaii Five-0? When did this happen?

I understand he starred in an episode called The Year of the Horse in Season 11 1979.
Been a while since I've been on the forum. I'll look that episode up.

He did meet Lee though and I think he planned to make some films with him before he died.

That's correct. Lee intended to cast Lazenby as one of the villains in GAME OF DEATH, and the two actors were also planning to appear together in STONER a.k.a. SHRINE OF ULTIMATE BLISS along with Sonny Chiba. When Lee died, Chiba backed out of the project and Angela Mao was cast opposite Lazenby.

Not to mention, the Warner Bros studios refusing to go with the millions of dollars budget, leaving Golden Harvest stranded on a naked little island...
