If you were to show a Bond-virgin ONE scene from the entire series

Tough question and unanswerable after reading all these selections. No single scene could introduce a newbie to the series sufficiently.

As much as I don't rate GF anywhere as much as some fans and it's default what is the best Bond film ever for lazy critics, I would have to say the PTS is pure gold.

This would definitely define the cinematic Bond for a newbie.

The PTS from CR is a great example of what defines this new era, Craig's intro show's us the kind of 007 we are going to get and then it's brilliantly book ended with that climatic Cliffhanger with Craig standing over Mr White saying the line for the first time.

Yes that iconic moment with Connery at the card table but it doesn't really tell anyone anything apart from the fact that Connery's Bond is cool. I think those scenes above tell you something about the character but as some of already said too many to list and it also depends on your take of the character, people try to be objective but personal opinion will always figure, OHMSS is my favourite Bond film but introducing someone new to the series? Connery or Craig I personally think, go for the 2 who have defined the role the most.

I vote for the laser scene in GF. The tension, the threat, the cold blooded larger than life villain, Bond having to talk his way out of a very dangerous moment.
This. Or the rock climbing scene in FYEO. Or the ski chase in OHMSS. Or even Bond clymbing the Whyte House in DAF and snyffing the flower in his breast pocket. Wonderful Bondian scene. (Would look stupid if Brosnan did it of course.)

If I'd show a scene to a newbie with the intend to get him interested I'd choose:

The pre-title sequence of Tomorrow Never Dies:
It has everything, Bond in action, saving the "world", airplane action, MI6 Headquarters, M, the stupid military, and Brosnan who brings everything important to the screen, the right looks, charm, suave, determination, humour, wit.

I'm pretty sure after that sequence the newbie is longing for more.

    Too much pressure.

Bond vs. OddJob in Fort Knox. That's what comes to mind for me (besides the opening scene DN).

This is a no brainer. Has to be the laser table scene from Goldfinger. That or the TSWLM PTS. Sorry to give the obvious answers but they are classic epic Bond moments to get a newbie hooked.

OP's nomination of the Koskov defection scene is interesting but a newbie won't be captivated by cinematic Bond. It's a great scene and these serious moments along with TLD's sillier scenes are why it's my fav film

The Montenegro train scene from CR. Simply the best thing you could show to a Bond virgin.

The opening of Goldfinger. Particularly if this first timer was a feminist.

Just to get her goat up a bit (bad woman being used as sex object/human shield).

A few scenes come to mind. When Bond is strapped to the table with the laser slowly moving toward him in Goldfinger, Bond facing off an against 006 at the end of GoldenEye, and the pre title sequence scene in Casino Royale.

For action: African Rundown in CR. For pure Bond suaveness the casino scene in Thunderball. For the books: The FYEO or Risico short stories are a good compact representation of 007's world.

That's a really, really good question, and sadly, I can't think of one single scene I would recommend for a Bond rookie. Off the top of my head, I may go with Connery's introduction in DN, simply because it's so cool and iconic and shows exactly what kind of man Bond is in just a few moments time.

It has to be the laser scene in Goldfinger for me and it's not even close. Connery putting in a very dramatic performance with a terrified cool in a dangerous situation, the villain of all villains in Goldfinger with brilliant dialogue and delivery, and to top it off there is a masterful selection by Barry in the background with the title song weaved into the score.

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of GF, this would also be an excellent choice, as it showcases a lot, as well. Great iconic scene.

The golf sequence is very special.

From OP I would choose the train sequence.

Remember, whatever you show has to be cool and can be understood and appreciated without knowing the context. The OP said "scene" and not sequence. So with these parameters in mind:

    1. Ski chase in TSWLM
    2. Bungee jump in GE
    3. Fight with Odd Job in GF
    4. Bond pushes Locque's car over the cliff in FYEO
    5. Ski chase in OHMSS
    6. Final scene in the sinking house in CR
    7. Siena foot chase in QoS
    8. Alligator scene in LALD
    9. The carnival scene in MR
    10. Shanghai skyscraper scene in SF

Actually, I would show them this bit from LTK!

Simply because it's so damn cool! You gotta love the moment when he get's up on two wheels! I have become very fond of Dalton as Bond...

Sorry to piss all over your cornflakes but I absolutely despise this moment.

There are so many fantastic believable stunts in this sequence - the plane to tanker transfer, the tanker smashing into the rock (an accident but left in the finished film because it looked so good), Bond clambering around on various tankers - and they just ruin it with this idiotic moment.

Even though it was probably achieved with effects I don't mind the tanker driving on two wheels on its side because I've seen this done with cars, but to try to pretend that a cab weighing Christ knows how many tons can rear up and do a wheelie as credible proposition if they just show enough shots of Bond stamping on the pedals and turn the Bond theme up to 11 is treating the audience like retards.

Its a Rog moment and if it was in a Rog film I might let it pass but there's no place for that in a Dalton film.

This is part of the reason I just can't take to LTK. It wants to be a serious Bond thriller but then does something so ridiculous and far fetched that all it's credibility goes out the window. I think that bit may be the worst scene in a Bond film.

For a Bond virgin it would have to be the Bond catching Goldfinger cheating scene. Sums up everything cool about Bond. He bests the villain AND seduces a beautiful girl all in one scene!

That's a strong claim. It's certainly bad. Can't think of a worse moment in the Dalton era. But worst of all time? The tsunami has to be worse doesn't it?

Back on topic you really can't go beyond GF PTS.

Has every aspect of Bond you need:

A bit of stealthy spy stuff
Effortless cool with the tux and lighting the fag
    Pulling a bird
    A bit of rough stuff
    A nice entertaining death
    Comedy gold
Smack in the chops title song

Introduction of Connery at the Casino in Dr. No.

I've actually deflowered a few people into the wonderful world of 007 and I can attest all it takes is the "Gunbarrel" scene from Thunderball to do the trick.

In addition, I'd probably use the build up to and the Grant train fight in FRWL.
For Roger, the pre-title sequence in OP, same with the pretitles to TLD for Tim.

    Agreed.

It would probably depend on the person that I was showing the scene to, assuming that the point of this is to get them to want to watch more of the franchise.

Off the top of my head, I'd probably go for Pushkin's interrogation in TLD. Terrific scene.

I would probably choose the GF PTS. I would like to see how the violence against women sits with them, as that's a common theme through the series. Then maybe move to the death of Corrine, death of Severine, death of Rosie Carver, etc. Either that or show Bond getting deflowered by Jinx in Die Another Day Pure class

So many but the end scene of DAF when Bond cooly, knowingly, uncovers Wint and Kid as fakes by smelling a rat and knowing his clarets and Tiffany Case following the resultant fight decides not to ask him to marry her! Love it. Why is DAF so underrated its been perfectly described in the past as a 'comic book for adults' which it is in a way no other Bond film has been before or since?

For action this or the QofS car chase.

If I had to pick just a classic scene it has to be Connery introduced as Bond in DN.
