I actually really enjoy Spectre, and rank it as Dan's second best Bond film after CR myself.
However, Spy was my first Bond experience. And it's a good Bond film. Hard to match.

Hello @Benny. I can't actually choose which of Daniel's four films are my favorites. I have the highest regard for CR, SF and SP. I just....enjoyed SP a lot on first watch. The Colonel Sun-torture scene, the wonderfully gothic SPECTRE-meeting, with the 'popping-eyes-out' finale, the interaction between Bond and White, best Blofeld since OHMSS (this time no deadly buttons on a desk, but a modern 'deadly I-pad', and a cracking train fight....in which we see Craig struggling for air.

PTS: TSWLM (I love both, but that jump at the end)
Title track: TSWLM (Writings On The Wall was torture for me)
Titles: TSWLM (Love the part where Bond knocks the soldiers over)
Main villain: SP (I hate both, but one was played by Christoph Waltz)
Main Bond Girl: SP (Barbara Bach can't act)
    Henchman: TSWLM (It's Jaws!)
Plot: TSWLM (I like Stromberg's plot, just not his performance
Dialogue: TSWLM (Can you play any other tune?)
Score: SP (Besides Bond 77, the score for TSWLM was atrocious)
Settings: TSWLM (I love the Cairo part)
Action: TSWLM (the PTS, the train fight with Jaws and the magnet scene at the end make it for me)
Humour: TSWLM (A Moore film vs a Craig film in terms of humour, hmmm)
Cinematography: TSWLM (the shots in Austria look great)
Benign Bizarre: TSWLM (Yet again, it's Moore)
Suspense: TSWLM (the bomb scene for example)
Minor Characters: TSWLM (Sandor was pretty cool I guess)
Glamour: TSWLM (Anya's costumes are great)
Bond performance: TSWLM (Moore's second best compared to Craig's bored expressions)

PTS: TSWLM - I actually like the SP pre-titles as a whole more, but it's the ski-jump that makes it go to Spy.
Title track: TSWLM - never liked it really, but WOTW is just as bad, or just that little bit worse.
Titles: SP - by far. I love the symbolism.
Main villain: SP - Stromberg never impresses, BWaltz's Blofeld does.
Main Bond Girl: SP -Lea!!!!!! erm, I mean....
Henchman: SP - I always thought Jaws was too much. And his 'comical'survival doesn't help.
Plot: TSWLM - overall, even though the 'nine eyes'is based in reality, it's thread is never really explained well. Stromberg's plans are overtly clear. Not that the film makes that much more sense, but still.
Dialogue: SP - just more interesting
Score: SP - some are going to kill me for this, but I'm not tooo fond of both.
Settings: SP - Model boats just don't do it for me that much.
Action: SP - Jaws is too comical, Hinx is a real fighter. And the helicopter in the pts counts too.
Humour: SP - more my style.
Cinematography: SP - just one of it's highlights.
Benign Bizarre: TSWLM - I guess the undersea world wins here.
Suspense: SP - again, TSWLM loses trough it's comical 'relief'.
Minor Characters: SP - White, Sciarra
Glamour: SP - rather obvious I gather.
Bond performance: SP - I just like Daniel more. Allthough this is a very close one as it is one of Moore's best performances.

    SP - 14
    TSWLM - 4

    hmm. didn't see that coming.

oh grow up & gracefully accept other's opinions.

I suspected that once the dust had settled, the evaluation of SP would decline.

Two days in and telling members to 'grow up' eh?

Spectre vs The Spy Who Loved Me

PTS: SP- i get more enjoyment out of bond waltzing over mexican rooftops to Los meurtos vivos estan than the camp nature of bond 77.
Title track: SP- nobody does it better is solid but is a bit too camp. Also sky used it over a montage of whiskey nose a while back. Awful.
Titles: SP- not overly keen on either but DK edges it.
Main villain: TSWLM- really disappointed in waltz who I don't find very menacing at all.
Main Bond Girl: SP- brilliant performance from a beautiful woman.
Henchman: SP- the hardest call to make but ultimately more scared of Hinx.
Plot: SP- much of a muchness but SP keeps me interested for longer.
Dialogue: SP- just solely because I love the whole exchange with white in Austria.
    Score: SP- spy too camp.
Settings: SP- lashing the DB10 through Rome and train ride through Africa.
Action: TSWLM- disappointed in spectres action. Only enjoy train fight.
Humour: TSWLM- dropping a fish out of lotus window > falling on to a couch.
Cinematography: SP- not skyfall standards but still enough to beat average spy.
Benign Bizarre: TSWLM - PTS, jaws, submarines, underwater hideouts. Lovely stuff.
Suspense: TSWLM- race against time before missile strikes.
    Minor Characters: draw
Glamour: SP- Rome and ivory dinner jacket
Bond performance: SP- best bond at his most relaxed.

    SP- 12
    TSWLM- 5

    SP vs TSWLM 0-18

TSWLM was Cubby reinventing the 007 formula and this time on his own, the man had a vision for his secret agent and was not too big to even cook for his crew and actors. The was Cubby's big return and finaly getting Moore doing what he did best.

Mendes vision was muddled and sadly Cubby's offspring seems to be too easy swayed into a direction that was poor when compared to TSWLM.
  • Final entries one and all?
  • edited September 2016 Posts: 3,236
Well, no more final entries were needed, as we finished with among our most lopsided game yet, as The Spy Who Loved Me walked all over Spectre, with a final margin of 324-96-11, and triumphed in total games by 20-4. In fact, poor SP was shut out in more games than it won, overall.

It's not all bad news, though, as SP gets the chance to rebound with a highly winnable matchup against Moonraker! Let's get to it, shall we?

PTS: SP (I think both are overrated, but SP carries the day)
    Title track: MR
    Titles: MR
    Main villain: SP (Oh, dear)

    Score: MR
Settings: SP (MR goes to space, which is a positive for some people, but not me)
    Action: SP
Humour: SP (I'm not picking any movie that has a double taking pigeon)
    Cinematography: SP
Benign Bizarre: MR (there sure is a lot of it)
Suspense: MR (there's at least an identifiable climax here, plus Corinne's death)
Minor Characters: SP (Mr. White comes through in the clinch yet again)
    Glamour: SP
    Bond performance: SP

12-5-1 in favor of SP, which is actually a little tighter than I predicted, but SP has some built in deficiencies here, as the Wiz has so helpfully chronicled. Well, time to see if SP can bounce back on your scorecards.

SP has no saving graces for me and while I would prefer to have Craig doing a standalone mission for his last movie I expect another outing with more personal stuff. While this Roger Moore outing is closer to the sometimes fantastic plots of Fleming and Roger Moore is simply brilliant in this and the next movies as 007 and I will always watch his movies when compared to QoS, SF & SP.

Am I correct in thinking that MR is the one where Bond goes to space, fights ninjas, and has a gondola chase? It's also the one with Jaws falling in love, two blocks of wood as the Bond girl and the villain, and last but not least the double taking pigeon, right?

Yes, I know, utterly bonkers but still a more enjoyable viewing expereince than SP IMHO
