well if we count NSNA then we are waiting for Bond 26.cause of both unofficial CR movies same as NSNA :) well in that case we should start saying :I cant wait for Bond 26 instead of that movie working title-Bond 23 :)
and 23 is number of MJ.Michael Jordan not Michael Jackson :).

It's Bond 23 of the official EON series. These are the films that have been airing since 1962 through the MGM film production company. Never Say Never Again wasn't one of these, it actually competed with Roger Moore's Octopussy from the official series.

NSNA is certainly a Bond film, and it's certainly an official Bond film as it was legally made, licensed, and released. However it isn't an EON production and EON are the ones labeling their films Bond 21, 22, 23, etc.

Heck Casino Royale 67 is just as official as NSNA and the others. It's a spoof, yes, but it's official.

So I keep with EON when counting the Bond X films, but keep explaining to anyone who says that NSNA and CR67 aren't official. ;)

So Bond 23 is the 3rd Craig flick!

is NSNA a Bond flick - of course it is... as Luds said - it's about as much a Bond film as CR'67 is...

but do i consider it part of the "official" MGM/EON series?... of course not - neither film was produced by either company..... they are Bond films - but just not cannon IMO...

I think at the time of release few people had any production company in mind when thinking of a Bond film, and NSNA was received as a Bond film by most of the audience. Looking back now it differs from the bulk of the series in quite a lot of details, thus anticipating very much the constant re-invention of the 90s and 00s.

I most of the time prefer not to count it as a real Bond film, because the production shows just too many ups and downs. Eon´s Bond films all had their whimsical moments, but they managed to forge the whole thing into something so bizzarre that inconsistencies even make sense. NSNA didn´t manage so well, be it the M scenes, which look as if they were shot inside a broom closet, or the entry to the scene where Bond is giving Domino a massage, which looks like clumsy desperation to put in girls in bikinis, or the deflated finale of the film.
But what keeps me most from liking the film as a whole, despite it having many great moments, is that it´s more busy with Sean-nostalgy than with putting on a big show or a great thrill.

    I never count it.

It is a James Bond film, just not made from EON. I mean, Connery plays a character named James Bond in it, no?
  • So would you count CR67 as a Bond film, and call the next one Bond 25? What about the Barry Nelson ABC one in the 50s?

No. The next Bond film will be the 23rd of the official series. The other three can be ignored, they were not made by EON and it shows and they are all either been spoofs or remakes.

It is not part of EON's James Bond series, but yes, it is a James Bond movie. It stars Sean Connery as James Bond 007 and is based on a book by Ian Fleming. It is actually a more faithful adaptation of the original source than many of the EON adaptations.

The next one is the 23rd official Bond film. But NSNA is certainly a James Bond film, even if not made by EON.
  • If you counted this, you may aswell count the other two Casino Royale's too, that would make the next film (bond 23): Bond 26 ?!

NSNA isn't an official Bond film, so it isn't counted in the actual franchise. But it is a Bond film, whatever way you look at it.

Stricly and technically speaking, Daniel Craig is the 7th EON James Bond (all media included), 8th portrayal of Ian Fleming's James Bond (all media included) but only the 6th cinematographic EON James Bond
  • Not part of the official movie series but, as it's main character is James Bond, then, yes, I guess you would class it as a Bond movie, no matter who produced it.

Of course NSNA is official. It's just as official as every other Bond film, it's simply not an EON production. It's just as official as the others. Licensed, and all.

@Luds - by "not official", I meant not an EON produced film. But it is indeed a Bond film.

It is a James Bond 007 adventures played by Sean Connery the UberBond, so what a silly notion of course it is a 007 movie.

Bond 23 is the 23rd of the EON productions with 007 in the leading role.

I think the topic should be "Never Say Never Again - A GOOD Bond Film ?"
THEN we'd have some debate, lol

I recently bought NSNA and rewatched it, and I'll say that it wasn't an utter failure like I remembered. Now, it is still a cheap Thunderball imitation, and doesn't come close to Thunderball. However, it has redeemable qualities and I do consider it a Bond movie, but I'd be hesitant to put it in the official 22 of EON, since that'd be a false assumption. The high points to me were the plot of Bond being older and M putting the 00's out of action, the fight at Shrublands with Lippe, the motorcycle chase and killing of Fatima Blush, and the North African palace scenes. The climax was disappointing to me a little bit, as the gun fight between SPECTRE and the US Navy was too short, and the fight with Largo was extremely weak.

The 3 unofficial Bond films were all pretty bad (overlooking the fact that some 'official' Bond films have been terrible as well), so I don't count them as 'Bond films', as such. Technically they are, but I choose to ignore that.

If I want to watch the story of Thunderball with Sean Connery, I watch Thunderball. Never Say Never Again is a poor re-imagining of it. Also, I've often wondered why Sean Connery did NSNA when Thunderball was supposed to have been his favourite appearance as Bond.

Nope. An utter disgrace that sadly Sean was apart of. Erased from memory.

Have to agree here. One major problem is that the good things about the film are a bit drowned out by the fact that it is simply impossible not to compare it to Thunderball, and in that comparison NSNA has no chance at all.
@Volante If you´re curious read Robert Sellers´ book ´Battle for Bond´. I think Connery was long time under contract when things turned out not the way they were intended.
