I tried making it a little better.

Next time I watch Spectre, I will exSpectre to hear John Barry's glorious music as Bond and Madeleine race down the tunnel of the MI6 building. =D>

@MajorDSmythe, thanks! Every time I do one of these I forget what the original music sounded like. :))

Dethroning GoldenEye?! I don't believe it!

    You better believe it :P
Not sure you know, but after 20 years of GE being my No 1, Spectre managed to dethrone GE!

@JamesBond I completely agree. I have watched my last new Bond film until the 'real' 007 returns.

If there is no actor in the Connery vibe then you can't have a classic Bond, perhaps? And "classic", by its definition, suggests something a bit old, from a bygone era. Life is about moving forward, surely? Not wanting to dwell in the past. Put it another way, if you're a fan of the Beatles and you listen to modern pop music and you dislike it you could say "we need classic Beatles type music in 2016" but all the people listing to modern pop would reply with

"No thanks, granddad! We're not listening to that old stuff!"

    :D

I think 'classic Bond' is part of the past and trying to 'force' it back will just produce some watered down imitation. Having said that, a Connery type new Bond actor could be cool but it's very unlikely to happen. Same is true with John Barry. If you found the greatest film composer of 2016 and asked him/her to do the music for Bond 25 - even if the music is amazing and John Barry-ish, it's still an imitation. You can never recapture the original so it's best for EON to keep updating Bond even if some purists don't like it. I'm not a huge fan of Daniel Craig as Bond but I accept his casting was a good idea in terms of updating the franchise. The next guy can do the same.

Imitation is never a bad thing if done right, though.

What is it about SP that managed to knock GE off your top spot after being there for so long? Overall GE imo is infinitely the superior film.

    No.
So the plan includes Turner I suppose. Can you recommend anything contemporary that I can watch him in? The shows that have been mentioned seem to be period pieces.

He hasn't really got anything contemporary in his filmography. It's mostly period stuff.

My plan includes Turner, yes. And Campbell too. :D

Aidan has mostly starred in period stuff lately, and before that he went through a fantasy phase with the Hobbit and Being Human. In fact, I think that perhaps that's part of the reason some fans have a hard time accepting him.

You might be right. Certainly for me, it's easier if I can visualize the actor in a contemporary actioner or something more current.

That is true, but then I think you risk making "Bond bait". It's the equivalent of how Hacksaw Ridge is Oscar bait, so transparent.

To me Turner has been extremely smart in the decisions he's made regarding the Jobs he's chosen. He played a Bond type character in ATTWN, but he was part of an ensemble, and the period setting actually makes it less obvious that he is putting forth his audition. Poldark is another example of playing a strong male figure, who is good with women and able to slip between the aristocracy and the working man. That stuff is far more likely to catch the eye of Barbara than some obvious Bond bait show like The Night Manager.

Fair points. Arguably Craig followed a similar trajectory (unique and non-Bond style roles), apart from Layer Cake right at the end.

I will go and see any new Bond film at the cinema when it's out. But I doubt I will be anytime again so much a Bond enthusiast like I was (and am) with Connery and Craig. All other Bond films I enjoyed but most of Connery's and most of Craig's films made me the Bond fan I am while the rest was and is top entertainment but nothing else. I fear anything that follows Craig will be exactly that.

No not at all and I remain curious to see what the next movie (and I am sure there will be one) will look and be like.

With due respect, my friend, I would disagree with this. I know there have been several changes in the franchise but at least we had true Bond in every one of them. We had suave Bond in every film except CR and specially QOS. I would like to say something but I'm afraid it corrupts my future in this circle of friendship.

CR is Fleming's Bond with regards to portrayal of character. Full stop.

The only thing I would like to see in a new Bond film is the man's culture. Watching the 60s and even the 70s it's apparent that Bond loves to show off his knowledge of..well everything really.

It became one of the joys of the 60s watching him bamboozle M with his knowledge of wines, brandies, butterflies whatever.

These days he flummoxes M with his knowledge of official passwords or protocol.

And when faced with situations where Connery or Lazenby would have thrived (ie the painting in the gallrey during Skyfall) Bond is simply bored, unmoved, unknowledgeable, or all three. Shame really.
