    Messed up post blargh.

While I'm here I'll also throw 'Only Myself to Blame' by Scott Walker from the TWINE soundtrack. Hey, might as well.

    That was my original post.

I understand that they always seek out an artist who can sell singles and soundtrack albums and who can draw audiences to the theatre. The original Winehouse choice makes sense in that respect. However, how about considering the timelessness of a Bond film's theme song?

With the exception of returns to Bassey and the Bassey wannabes (Gladys Knight and arguably Tina Turner), the producers have almost always gone with whoever was "hot" at the moment. Paul McCartney and Carly Simon were huge in the '70s, as were Sheena Easton, Duran Duran, and a-ha in the '80s, and U2 and Sheryl Crow in the '90s.

But even the "hot" artists can have an "off" song. Sometimes you're lucky to get A View to a Kill, but sometimes you get Tomorrow Never Dies.

Ah, you are quite correct. Well, at least we both agree the song was horrible! :D
  • #1 Quantum of Solace
    #2 Die Another Day
    #3 For Your Eyes Only
#4 The Spy Who Loved Me
#5 not really sure, was going to include a Bassey tune, but maybe it's not so bad

DAD by Madonna suits DAD the film perfectly. They were both terrible.
  • Pity really as Madonna has done some really fine work before as theme artist on pictures such as Who's That Girl, Evita and At Close Range (with her husband of the time Sean Penn) but her Bond work is terrible, I didn't mind her cameo too much but every time now when Die Another Day is on and the pre credit sequence is done with I merely skip the credits or leave the room, it is that bad

As echo started this thread about "worst song on a Bond soundtrack", it's not necessarily about title songs only. Therefore I would like to come up with "Do you know how christmas trees are grown" from the OHMSS soundtrack: it's sooo annoying! And even worse, it's so catchy that I can't get it out of my mind once I've listened to it! %-(

Do you know how christmas tree's are grown stand alone is maybe overly sweet. though when played during certain scene, where blofelds henchman are trying to kill bond in the movie, the music is at odds with the action, to me it create more tension.

    Yeah, I can't stand it.

Let me ask you this, how would you feel about it if it were sung by someone else, like say Shirley Bassey, or Tom Jones even?

Why have I only just heard this tune after 13 years?

The tune's great but everything else is mediocre.
  • I never cared for "Licence To Kill" or "From Russia With Love"...And I will agree with many others that "Another Way To Die" was pretty disappointing, especially after a strong song in "You Know My Name" from Casino Royale.

YKMN is a strange one. I'm not too bothered about the version they use in the actual film but I LOVE the official version.

Oh, I don't even remember that scene!
The song is being played at the Lauterbrunnen train station when Bond arrives in Switzerland, but just briefly, so it doesn't bother me in that scene. And then again I think the melody is played by the Music boxes that Blofeld gives to his "angels of death".

But can you tell me what scene you were referring to?

Thank you for letting me what AWTD meant ... I still feel stupid about that. But unlike most experts here, I really only know the title songs by name. And yes, DAD gets my vote for worst song in the franchise. Followed by MWTGG (I love 60's pop but I still just don't like this for a Bond movie; sorry Lulu!). Just personal taste: I do like FYEO, though. Go figure.

Everyone has their own favs for the worst song. Myself, I would choose DAD and AWTD. These are to up tempo and do not do the franchise any justice. How about Tom Jones to come back for the new song.!! Lets hope it is not Adele as it will be played to death and we will all be sick of it before the film comes out.

Why do people hate this song? It's actually quite good.

i remember back, before i owned all the films - i had the 30th Anniversary Album which has all the themes up to LTK on it.. so the themes that I hadn't seen with the movies, I was experiencing for the first time just as songs... and I remember disliking it then, and it hasn't changed for me, and that was 14 years ago (damn where did the time go lol)..

but it's a combination of LuLu's wretched singing, and the music itself.... in the vein of AWTD, you can tell they wanted something to match the popularity of LALD - but fell well short of the mark.... i much prefer the version that plays at the end of movie - it's a little slowed down, and i think showcases LuLu's true vocal talent, instead of this weird mash of screeching, horns, and guitars.

Apparently MWTGG was the only Bond song not to make it into the UK charts. Also Lulu had a cold on the day of recording.
  • LTK
    TND
    TWINE
    DAD
    QoS
    Absolutely Vulgar Tunes.
The rooftop fight scene in YOLT is the only thing that saves that song from being on my list.

Yes, I agree with you. It's treacly as a standalone but somehow works when Bond finds Tracy at the ice rink. And of course, Barry's instrumental is excellent.

On another note, while I like the version of LALD sung in the club in New Orleans, it is somewhat jarring to hear the theme sung during the movie.

It's also played in the ice rink scene? Gee, I have to watch that film again! I only remembered the train station scene. So obviously you are right, as in the other scenes the song did not annoy me enough to remember it...

Some one did AWTD for a preview of my school music festival last year, THAT SOUNDED BETTTER.

Although its very hard to save a song that's un-saveable. Yes I did ask the music teacher "you had 20 films to choose from why did you choose the worst!?"

I used to not like TMWTGG. But, it has grown on me over the years.

The worst song? QOS. Even Michael Wilson was ashamed about it, making an excuse that they rushed it out, not giving that part of making the film, the time it deserved.

I think TMWTGG's theme is better than LALD's theme. I like the pace TMWTGG's theme goes, it's very lively. LALD's theme is too slow at times.

  • There's maybe a part of me somewhere that maybe hates the Lulu song, but thing is whenever I get an opportunity to see Golden Gun again, it's ever so slightly annoying but by the same token vibrant and lively and I think the positives far outweigh the negatives with this particular theme intro, the least said about the Quantum "effort" the better

I love this song! It's energetic, the lyrics are a lot of fun, it has a great composition which is extended well in the rest of the score and the choice of instruments is inspiring.

Compared to the likes of AWTD, DAD or TND, this piece of music is brilliant, at least IMO.
