Favourite line from Judi Dench

Re-watching some of the Brozza films I noticed just how many quips Dench has. What's your favourite? I like the exchange with Geoffrey Palmer.

"Sometimes I don't think you have the balls for this job"
"Perhaps, but the advantage is I don't have to think with them all the time"

It has to be GE when she is first introduced and calls Bond the 'sexist, mysogonist, dinosaur,a relic of the cold war' - that was a good scene.

IMO for me it's a line from the french version of TWINE... when Bond is in the pipeline with Christmas.... 'ET BOUND !!???' she yells... the way she deforms Bond's name is just hilarious.
  • my fav will be when she announces to the press that she is no longer M...i had no issue with her being Brosnan's boss but so no reason why she was brought back in Casino Royalle...just didn't make sence

Campbell and EON felt "no matter how much you muck up the timeline, you can't get rid of Judi Dench".

Make of that what you will.

She is a very good actress but if you are rebooting the series then everything has to go,otherwise people will ask questions that basically cant be answered.
  • i'm not slagging the grand lady off i just would have preferred her to be recast in a reboot......i didnt buy the agruement of "we couldn't recast judi"..

Back on topic. I do like....

"We have people everywhere. I thought that was just hyperbole. Florists say that.."

    Good line.

GE: "Unlike the American government, we prefer not to get our bad news from CNN."

TND: (responding to a comment made about not having the 'balls' for the job) "Perhaps.. but the advantage is is that I don't have to think with them all the time."

TWINE: "Shadows stay in front or behind, never on top."

DAD: "You're no use to anyone now."

CR: "How the hell does he know these things?"

QOS: "I think you're blinded by such inconsolable rage, that you don't care who you hurt. And when you can't tell your friends from your enemies it's time to go."

If they'd got rid of Dame Judi for CR then that (I think) would have meant a total 100% casting break from all the other movies, which I think would have been a big shame. As it is all the films are linked by cross-overs. I think that's quite nice.

And really, continuity has never been a big concern in the franchise so who cares if the 'reboot' brought Dench back. She's always looked old any way, so you can't really place her in time.

meh. I thought she was good in GE and TND, I thought she was GREAT in TWINE, but after that she's really been overused and its not a good thing. TWINE was original having M involved more but since then we've been seeing what I think is too much of her. I'm a bit skeptical about skyfall because I thought we'd been seeing too much of M, then its announced we have an M focused plot, ugh. The film will probably be good but I'd rather she'd taken a backseat for this one. Get a bernard lee type next, man or woman, I don't care as long as they're less involved.

On topic, I like the sexist dinosaur thing in GE.

Hopefully she gets killed in Skyfall - preferably fairly early on.

Her Goldeneye exchange with Brosnan has to be her best lines although she is great in every scene IMO. Don't quite understand all this anti-Judi sentiment. She is a fine actress, equally as good if not an even better actor than the late great Bernard Lee. I understand people may want a return to the male M/Bond dynamic but there is no need to unnecessarily criticise a fine actress after all the good work she has brought to the part.

Only kidding. She was the only good thing in the films during the Dark Ages. But it's time from a new face.

If she is to exit, perhaps she can regenerate Doctor Who style!

Good idea. I vote she comes back as Matt Smith.
  • Is it Finnes for M or so the rumour goes...

That's what peeps are saying. He's so sinister tho. Can't see him as M. Also he's a tad too young to boss Jimbo. Although he likes a franchise does Fiennes - lets him do other stuff on the side. And now Potter is (thankfully) over he needs a new gig.

You put it so well! I whole heartedly agree on this one! :))

Yes she is a good actress. Its nothing to do with her being a woman though, its that recently she's become over involved, and me and others would prefer it if M let bond get on with it instead of trying to be his mum. It was original in TWINE but now its old, its tired, and its boring. Let bond be bond without M holding his hand saying she needs to trust him.

    Her most prophetic line.

The mysoginist dinosaur bit is my actual favorite.

A great point. People who hate Dame Judi for continuity issues don't seem to have an issue with Charles Gray in two roles, or Joe Don Baker in two. Or the many recasts of Blofeld. Or Leiter.

It really feels like sexism sometimes.

Or that fans have selective memories.
  • I like the scene in CR when Bond breaks in M's appartment.

"Bond, this may be too much for a blunt instrument to understand, but arrogance and self-awareness seldom go hand in hand."

It's an interesting analysis that M gives to Bond.

"Any thug can kill, I want you to take your ego out of the equation and justify the situation dispassionately."

The way Dench pronounces theses sentences... very strong.
  • Best line from Dame Judi, bar none, in CR:

Bond: "I never knew that M stood for...--"
M: "UTTER ANOTHER SYLLABLE AND I'LL HAVE YOU KILLED!"

    I'll miss that woman.

    I don't know why, but:

    "I f***ed this up, didn't I?"

It's just the culmination of all the events she was responsible for throughout SF, all into one depressed line.
