I love both the score in FYEO and the film itself. Sorry, I may be in the minority, but I'm glad Barry didn't compose it. Otherwise, we would've gotten a tired score like all his Moore era efforts aside from a few cues (especially in Moonraker, great cues and musical segments there, but that's about it). Conti's gunbarrel beats all of Barry's post-Connery ones.

I actually really like most of Serra's score (I absolutely love the lush, romantic bits). It gives the film personality and an undeniably strong identity. I can't even bare to listen to Conti's score. Which is a shame because I know that there is a really strong film underneath it.

MR, OP and AVTAK are largely excellent. The former and the latter are sublime at points. I say that as someone who really doesn't mind the FYEO score (and quite likes a fair portion of it).

Serra's score, for me, can hurt some scenes that were otherwise fine on their own, like the Bond/Xenia chase - great moment, I always enjoy it, but that cheesy porn music doesn't help.

Yeah, definitely not my favorite track of his. Anyway, probably a conversation for another thread.

Both MR and AVTAK are of his post-Connery greats. There are bits that feel very Bondian it awakens the action man in you... like the Snow Business cue from AVTAK, or the Cable Car cue as well as the space intro bits. But, TMWTGG and OP are awfully tired. Can't remember anything from them other than sounds of tired and sleepy philharmonic tunes. Got to say also he didn't deliver a great gunbarrel theme after DAF.

Who reckons we're going to be told off for derailing the thread? Apologies in advance, but that's what happens when news is scarce and bollocks.

I'll give that to Newman. Thomas Newman.

...which tying back to Bond 25, I wouldn't want to see him return. If Eon hires him back, I'll be really speechless...

No harm in going off topic once in a while. But this thread has an abundance of trash, so I've been trying to regulate it. This is a good conversation, but it has no business here.
  • Off topic, yes, and I see someone has already come to the defense of two of Barry's greatest scores of all time, Moonraker and A View to a Kill, but I must put a word in for Octopussy which features some gorgeous lyric writing and exotic suspense music: "That's My Little Octopussy," "Arrival at the Island of Octopussy," "Bond at the Monsoon Palace," "Bond Meets Octopussy." That's all. Beautiful music. Barry rocking it regardless of what's on screen.

And yes, back on topic, Newman announced for Bond 25 would crush me more than anything. Arnold needs to announce, "I never left."

I don't want Newman or Arnold back for Bond 25. I want new blood, new sound for Bond 25
  • Croatia, helicopter stories... wouldn't it be cool if EON were filming a quicky Bond 25 in secrecy. In the 1960s they put out one a year, so they've certainly had time to get one off the ground if they brought down their budget and production standards (it could still look great - shorn of any excesses). It could either be a new beginning for the series, or just fill in nicely the gap until another big one can be made.

Not sure of current commitments for DC? But I am sure with all these tit bits flying around in the media? Hopefully we will have some sort of official statement soon from EON?

    Damn, I must've missed those!

In all seriousness, I'm not sure if these few mentions of B25 progress will warrant an official statement anytime soon, but it's better than hearing nothing, for those who are eager to get any sort of info regarding the film.

+1. The scores post Barry, apart from a few decent flourishes here and there, have been terribly subpar, especially in relation to what came before from this storied franchise. Hackneyed efforts that lack the originality and memorable deft melodic touches of Barry, Hamlisch & Martin imho. It's rather shameful, when one considers that Bond set the standard in this field for some time.

Time for someone new to inject new life & style into the Bond sound.

Ludwig Goransson would be a very interesting choice who would do an excellent job scoring a Bond film.

I still have no idea why EON let that moron score not one, but two Bond movies. Even when talking about some lousy scores from the past (Serra, Conti), at least they had their moments of Bond style. Newman never sounds Bondian or grand. I want Arnold back for B25, and the foreseeable future.

There are far better composers out there than this. He's had his 5.
