The action was okay to a point, but as I said in my overview, after a while it just became mindless and the same beat for beat conflicts. When you have a film that structures itself around 5 to 6 major fights, and they all have the same feeling, that does murder on the pacing and actually distracts away from what the film should've focused on far more, which is the driving force of the characters. I wanted more of Charles, more of the girl, less of the slashy-slashy every ten to twenty minutes. In that respect, I felt let down, as the fights weren't that interesting while being recycled and you can only watch Logan dismember or behead a man so many times before you just can't be bothered anymore.
I think the film's biggest problem for me going forward will be freshness. It's built to be predictable, and runs through the same motions interspersed with some character moments that needed to be supported more. I watched one trailer, but less than twenty minutes into the film I knew exactly what the film was going to be and end like, and I was unsurprisingly correct. It just made things a bit too obvious, not only in the themes and message it was carrying but also in what the plot was leading to ultimately. And at times there's barely a plot, which is tricky.
I can tell already that this one will be a very overhyped or overlauded film going forward. It's good, but no wheels were reinvented. I at least hope it continues to set a precedent for more adult stories being told in the genre, just ones that are a bit more restrained and better paced as The Dark Knight and The Winter Soldier.
Loved the TV show with Edward Woodward growing up. Have to say I loved this, and the new spin on the character from Denzel Washington for me is a stroke of genius. Never get bored of watching this man perform.
Gods of Egypt 2016
Love Egyptian history so obviously I suspended all that I know of it to watch this one. Great popcorn fun with Nikolaj Coster Waldau who was a great hero and ofcourse Gerard Butler as the Villain. After seeing that I would not mind seeing Butler opposite Craig for Bond 25!!!
Does it? It's always named one of the premier noirs alongside The Maltese Falcon.
Maybe I'm going to the wrong websites. I've never seen it in any "Best Films of All Time" type lists, which I think it should be. Anyway one of my favorite noirs easily, and just an amazing film in general.
I don't think you'd find many of the best noirs in those kinds of lists, really, outside a few historically notable movies.
With noir, it's best to just see how they are respected in their genre. That's where you can find the best of the best, and films like The Big Sleep (1946) and Out of the Past are treated like royalty. Outside of that, lists for "the best films ever" can be quite stuffy and driven by pop culture fame and what not, and it doesn't help that noir films are one of those that you really need your brain on to watch, and I don't think many want to go through the effort.
Some of the best films I've ever seen, in quite a high number, are noirs, yet I don't think movies like The Detective (1968) are ever going to be talked about with all the greats, simply because pop culture brushes over them if they're not super famous and uber-quotable. We know they're masterpieces though, so who cares.
This one never gets old. One of my favorite films of the last 15 years.
Anyway, I saw Allied last night - which was pretty good. Nothing extremely special and, at worst, predictable. Still, not bad acting and seemed like a good depiction of life in London during the Blitz.
Also watched Nocturnal Animals the night before last - what a film. Looks fantastic, is really intense and gives a lot to think about as the credits roll.
I never see this franchise mentioned here (even though the first film as General Orlov himself Stephen Berkoff is the villain of the film) over all this movie is a strong entry in one of the sadly 3 great trilogies from the 80's that had too many issues getting a 4th film off the ground (though if we look at A) the ideas of the 4th film and B the issues of Indianna Jones and Kingdom of the stupid looking aliens... I mean Crystal Skull and the precieved issues of Live Free or Die Hard and the Actual issues of A good Day to Die Hard Am I the only one who is happy Beverly Hills Cop 4 is forever in Development Hell)
A lot of great humor from Eddie Murphey in this film and a lot of great action and character development overall the film is a solid piece of 80's entertainment (and the score my god the SCORE is so amazing I am a little sad Harold Flatymer didn't to a Bond Score I am sure I am the only person but since Goldeneye sounds inspired by him I wonder how much better that score would of been had it been done by Harold F)

Mitchum is entirely satisfied with all of this worship.
Mitch was too humble to get an ego. With any talk of worship he'd probably crack a grin and point you to the nearest steeple.
Never played the game but have to say I really enjoyed this. Love the Warhammer universe so this was right up my street. :-bd

I found it a bit odd, it seemed like two different films, it wanted to be a hard-boiled cop thriller then became a comedy and then there was the (at the time) odd thing of having pop hits play over the sound track for no apparent reason. Wasn't it something like the Pointer Sisters playing over a car/van chase? Very odd. It probably hasn't aged very well.
Yeah it's always been a bit overrated. It was basically Eddie Murphy's persona tagged onto a lame cop thriller.
A much better showcase for his talents was 48HRS.
