Casino Royale (1954) to me at least is an amusing adaptation of the first book, but jarring to think of the liberties they took.
Casino Royale (1967) has an excellent cast, but that's it. No coherent story, and having 5 directors didn't help either. I think Feldmen should've sold the rights to Brocolli and Saltzmen and just agree to a contract with them. This was the movie that gave Feldman his fatal heartattack.
And last but not least...
The return of Sean Connery in Never Say Never Again is a mixed bag. It's largely forgettable, I like the idea of Largo have mental issues but that's really it. Kim Basigner is boring, Rowan Atkinson is jarring, and the whole film has dated horribly, and ultimately, has to be one of my most uncomfortable film expierences.
@IGotTheMessage I've never watched NSNA and don't intend to. I don't view it as part of the Canon and would only watch it out of curiosity.
Is your username a Living Daylights reference? What's your ranking?
Made by EON and Danjaq?
I don't consider NSNA a true Bond film; more of a film featuring Bond. That's it.
I understand that. I don't want to negatively predispose you to the film, but as I am sure that you have heard many people refer to it poorly already, I will add my opinion that it is not particularly good. It really does have serious problems, although it is better than Die Another Day and Diamonds Are Forever, at least in my eyes.
I apologize for not having put a ranking yet. As pathetic as it may sound, I still have not seen Spectre yet. I know, I know, but it is the truth. I should probably sit down and watch it tonight.
Yes, my username is from The Living Daylights. I thought about making it "YesIGotTheMessage," or something along those lines, but it didn't have the same ring to it and there was no way good way to signify the pause between "Yes" and "IGotTheMessage." Nice to see you pick up on it.
If you ever become interested, I would say that you should see NSNA and formulate your own feelings on it, even if they are not positive. It is basically a Bond film.
I would also say that about Casino Royale '54 being that it is only about fifty minutes long, although unlike NSNA, it is impossible to classify it as a real James Bond film. It is also available for free on YouTube.
Casino Royale '67 is basically an Austin Powers movie and not worth the time of day as far as Bond goes. I have seen the first half hour or so (once) and I had no interest in continuing. I will probably never go back to it. It is no more a Bond film than Austin Powers is. If that is your thing though, you may enjoy it.
When I look at the Bond series, I have always viewed it as the Eon films and NSNA, which makes twenty-five films in total. As I wrote above though, I still have yet to see Spectre.
I do enjoy some films that pay homage to Bond films like for instance the OSS films with Dujardin.
NSNA is somewhere between those films and the official series but as it is left out of everything that refers to the series, I just can't count it.
Bond film, yes. Part of the series, no.
No gunbarrel, no party.
@GoldenGun
The gunbarrel sequence was relegated to the end in QOS and SF though.
@IGotTheMessage I will eventually get around to it, perhaps in a Bondathon in the lead up to Bond 25.
Why have you not watched Spectre? :-?
You could check it out being that you are just wrapping up another Bondathon now. It would be worthwhile to at least take a look at it.
I didn't go to see either Skyfall or Spectre in theaters when they came out. I have subsequently seen Skyfall, but I still haven't watched Spectre yet. I know that I should, but I just hadn't been interested in Bond for years until I began to watch some of the Bond films again late last Summer.
It isn't really that hard to be much better than Die Another Day or Diamonds Are Forever.
Better than the Brosnans, MR and AVTAK.
It's much better if you can put any memory of TB out of your mind when watching it (to avoid direct comparisons where it falls short).
As I said on another thread, the consistency of output (in terms of quality and regularity) is gone imho, so I'm less concerned about it these days. That's what I was keen on protecting in the past.

Nope.
I probably told this story once before: but my mom's boyfriend basically "kidnapped" me to the drive-in, where we saw Superman III and NSNA double feature. He drove a big white van, that was suspicious enough. But he was pretty cool: we ate two buckets of KFC.
In any case, I didn't realize he had taken me w/o permission until we got home and the cops were waiting for us. Remember: no cell phones back then.
NSNA has a special, locked-away place in my heart. The opening theme song is soooo cheesy, but also WONDERFULLY cheesy.
However, it just misses that sparkle that even the worst EON Bonds still have. Moonraker, for instance, is ludicrous, silly and at times very stupid but it has that special atmosphere that every EON film has and I miss that when I watch NSNA.
It is in my opinion. Fleming inspired script, great villains, great Bond girl, great locations, brilliant one liners and.......Connery. Its better than DF, TMWTGG, MR, OP, AVTAK, GE, TND, TWINE and DAD.

Clear groupings of Bond movies in my rankings. From 4-11, it could be any order and I'd be happy with it such is my love for those films. Bottom six are secure for a long while yet I feel.
That's nice.
