Bond movie ranking (Simple list, no details)

  • I always keep the unofficial films off my ratings because each one varies with me to a different degree;

Casino Royale (1954) to me at least is an amusing adaptation of the first book, but jarring to think of the liberties they took.

Casino Royale (1967) has an excellent cast, but that's it. No coherent story, and having 5 directors didn't help either. I think Feldmen should've sold the rights to Brocolli and Saltzmen and just agree to a contract with them. This was the movie that gave Feldman his fatal heartattack.

    And last but not least...

The return of Sean Connery in Never Say Never Again is a mixed bag. It's largely forgettable, I like the idea of Largo have mental issues but that's really it. Kim Basigner is boring, Rowan Atkinson is jarring, and the whole film has dated horribly, and ultimately, has to be one of my most uncomfortable film expierences.

You really still have two films left to grade from your current re-watching. I recognize that Never Say Never Again is essentially based on Thunderball and that it is not an Eon production, but I have always seen it as a legitimate Bond film nonetheless. Of course, the same cannot be said of Casino Royale '54 or Casino Royale '67. Also, it is not like the situation that produced NSNA is going to happen again, so there isn't much risk of the canon being effected much in the future.

I am assuming that you view NSNA fairly poorly? Where would you place it in your ranking?

@IGotTheMessage I've never watched NSNA and don't intend to. I don't view it as part of the Canon and would only watch it out of curiosity.

Is your username a Living Daylights reference? What's your ranking?

    Made by EON and Danjaq?

I don't consider NSNA a true Bond film; more of a film featuring Bond. That's it.

I understand that. I don't want to negatively predispose you to the film, but as I am sure that you have heard many people refer to it poorly already, I will add my opinion that it is not particularly good. It really does have serious problems, although it is better than Die Another Day and Diamonds Are Forever, at least in my eyes.

I apologize for not having put a ranking yet. As pathetic as it may sound, I still have not seen Spectre yet. I know, I know, but it is the truth. I should probably sit down and watch it tonight.

Yes, my username is from The Living Daylights. I thought about making it "YesIGotTheMessage," or something along those lines, but it didn't have the same ring to it and there was no way good way to signify the pause between "Yes" and "IGotTheMessage." Nice to see you pick up on it.

If you ever become interested, I would say that you should see NSNA and formulate your own feelings on it, even if they are not positive. It is basically a Bond film.

I would also say that about Casino Royale '54 being that it is only about fifty minutes long, although unlike NSNA, it is impossible to classify it as a real James Bond film. It is also available for free on YouTube.

Casino Royale '67 is basically an Austin Powers movie and not worth the time of day as far as Bond goes. I have seen the first half hour or so (once) and I had no interest in continuing. I will probably never go back to it. It is no more a Bond film than Austin Powers is. If that is your thing though, you may enjoy it.

When I look at the Bond series, I have always viewed it as the Eon films and NSNA, which makes twenty-five films in total. As I wrote above though, I still have yet to see Spectre.

The way I see it, as a Bond fan I am a fan of all things Bond, including the lesser products, as long as they are part of the official series.

I do enjoy some films that pay homage to Bond films like for instance the OSS films with Dujardin.

NSNA is somewhere between those films and the official series but as it is left out of everything that refers to the series, I just can't count it.

Bond film, yes. Part of the series, no.

    No gunbarrel, no party.

    @GoldenGun

The gunbarrel sequence was relegated to the end in QOS and SF though.

@IGotTheMessage I will eventually get around to it, perhaps in a Bondathon in the lead up to Bond 25.

Why have you not watched Spectre? :-?

You could check it out being that you are just wrapping up another Bondathon now. It would be worthwhile to at least take a look at it.

I didn't go to see either Skyfall or Spectre in theaters when they came out. I have subsequently seen Skyfall, but I still haven't watched Spectre yet. I know that I should, but I just hadn't been interested in Bond for years until I began to watch some of the Bond films again late last Summer.

It isn't really that hard to be much better than Die Another Day or Diamonds Are Forever.

As I said somewhere recently, NSNA is a much easier watch for me these days. It's much less of an outlier in my mind, since so much of what was 'canon' has evaporated from the official entries, and they've even aped some of the concepts that this film first came up with, further blurring the line.

It's much better if you can put any memory of TB out of your mind when watching it (to avoid direct comparisons where it falls short).

I never rank the old CR film, the CR spoof, or NSNA. Just hard for me to group them with the official EON films.

NSNA is just a Bond film made by someone else. It's not part of EON's series, but it's as legit a piece of Bond media as anything else.

I don't consider NSNA a real Bond film. It's a nice little curio, but I never make any comparisons between it and the official canon.

I started ranking NSNA last year because I feel like it is a better Bond film than at least 5-7 entries. It's got all of the right Bond elements with a unique twist.

Would you oppose having something like NSNA now days where they would have another company also making bond films?

If it means getting a film more frequently, and as long as the quality is up to expected standards, I wouldn't be opposed to it. I don't mind who makes them, as long as they're decent. I imagine I'm in the minority.

As I said on another thread, the consistency of output (in terms of quality and regularity) is gone imho, so I'm less concerned about it these days. That's what I was keen on protecting in the past.

Like any film, NSNA is a product of when it was released and how we viewed it.

I probably told this story once before: but my mom's boyfriend basically "kidnapped" me to the drive-in, where we saw Superman III and NSNA double feature. He drove a big white van, that was suspicious enough. But he was pretty cool: we ate two buckets of KFC.

In any case, I didn't realize he had taken me w/o permission until we got home and the cops were waiting for us. Remember: no cell phones back then.

NSNA has a special, locked-away place in my heart. The opening theme song is soooo cheesy, but also WONDERFULLY cheesy.

NSNA features four actors whose work I like a lot: Klaus Maria Brandauer, Max von Sydow, Edward Fox and of course Sir Sean.

However, it just misses that sparkle that even the worst EON Bonds still have. Moonraker, for instance, is ludicrous, silly and at times very stupid but it has that special atmosphere that every EON film has and I miss that when I watch NSNA.

I'll easily take NSNA over TWINE. They're pretty much on par in terms of atmosphere (lousy), but NSNA has big Sean.

    Nope.

It is in my opinion. Fleming inspired script, great villains, great Bond girl, great locations, brilliant one liners and.......Connery. Its better than DF, TMWTGG, MR, OP, AVTAK, GE, TND, TWINE and DAD.
