Like the MI films have done so well, there can be continuity without having each film being dependent on the previous. I guess you could call it “passive continuity “

M:I 6 will be a bit more 'active' with relation to M:I III
Only in regards to Julia. Not the whole film. It'll be more active to Rogue Nation if anything.

    You seen the script?
    Have you?
    A few pages :)
I did see one page that McQuarrie posted on his social media account, but apart from that I haven't. So, what you're saying is that they're going to tie Philip Seymour-Hoffman's character to the Syndicate? or maybe even bring Rabbit's Foot to the play?

Maybe just wait to you see the film - it's epic!

I don't doubt it. I'm very much looking forward to it as they've not let me down since 2006.

... I'd love a 15 rated Bond. With an old Bond in the vein of Logan. That would shake things up a bit....

christ no.. we've got the "too old to serve" Bond storyline in SF..

this is the dangerous path with Craig that i was worried they'd go down - and thats treating his tenure as if it's the alpha and omega of Bond... we never referenced Bond's age in Sean's run - never got it with Broz - and we sure as hell never got it with Rog who 57 in AVTAK... i can't put my finger on why it bothers me so much - it just does.. lol
I completely agree, which is why I was (and am) strongly in favour of Craig's exit. We won't get a straight thriller with him in tow (the closest we got to it was CR, where he had the least influence). They've committed to this direct continuity artsy path and I don't see them changing course now as the last 10+ years have all been about the reboot characters 'arc' (Logan will probably have an influence, as has been rumoured. I can't tell you how happy I am that Thor Ragnarok took it out of the top 10 for the year earlier this week. I hope it drops further before the end of 2017). Furthermore, I personally think this is an actor indulgent thing to do, since it has (and will) make it more difficult to move on, but it is what it is.

If done right. Although, I would very much rather they only retain the chronology part and not maintain tight continuity. The Bond films even more so.

If they really pull off a Spectre on it, I'm not sure I will appreciate that, especially tying Owen Davian (Seymour Hoffman) to The Syndicate - if my assumption is right - which I find quite lazy to begin with. But, if it's the Rabbit's Foot they'll be revealing since that MacGuffin wasn't unveiled to its true nature, that I'd be looking forward to seeing.
  • Instead of resorting to hibernation and repeating Skyfall hundred times, I'd rather they take more liberties with the storytelling while still remaining respectful to the franchise and the source material without going over their heads to change actual character backgrounds with absurd turnouts (i.e. Blofeld being an Oberhauser, let alone foster brother to Bond).

Things the Bond films shouldn't do for a long time:
    -Rogue Agent villain
    -Mole/Traitor Within
    -Personal Connections to main/recurring characters
-Trust Issues with the home team (MI-6 overall)
-Romantic Outburst with a Bond Girl (i.e. creating another Vesper or Tracy)
    -Bond Going Rogue (please stop!)
-NOC List Being The Subject (done to death!)
-Old Man Bond/Old vs New (or Old Dog, New Tricks)
-Killing Off Main Characters To Create Drama

Instead of repeating these all over again, write a damn genuine James Bond thriller and make it look original. No, Bond doesn't have to wear a tuxedo and go to a casino in every film. Write a spy thriller plot, and tailor it to Bond afterwards. Not too hard to achieve.

And not too hard to understand, one should think.

Again I said this back in 2008 and I am bringing it back up here.. Fleming usually in his short stories always gives bond a reason to be in a location and that reason can become the barebones plot of a film itself.

Look at the Hildebrand Rarity short story I think it's only 2 sentences but Bond is on the island to check the security of an island for a location of a military base... Again that could be the plot of a film why is bond sent their is the location known for strife against the military for dramatic elements does Bond even want to do it there is so much a pair of writers can do with just 2 sentences in a short story let alone the rest of the short story which could easily be a movie as well (the murder could be utilized similar to the living daylights)

    but oh well

@noSolaceleft You really should see how Dynamite Entertainment are handling their Bond comics. Stories very worthy of being films!

Well, IF they attempt to tie together certain elements that have appeared in the various films, I have little doubt that it will be handled with more style and logic than it was in SPECTRE.

You never know........You never know :-). Perhaps Bond 25 does it with much more style this time and MI 6 not :-D!

Does anyone think the US release date will move, now that WW2 has moved up (no doubt to avoid SW9)?

I would imagine that they would want to maximize their chances of success after being away for 4 long years (and after a lacklustre reception for the last one), and right now they are up against it stateside with the Nov 8th date.

It's a ballsy move from Warner to open a week before. They don't seem too concerned about B25.

Theory: Warner executives already know Bond 25 will be a medium budget thriller, instead of a mega budget action movie.

You could be right, given they no doubt have been involved in discussions for distribution. They probably know the direction and ambition of this film.

Either that or they have the job already and are going to move the release date themselves.

All big films these days try and appeal to women. DC is (or was) a draw in that respect. Adele also drew in the ladies in 2012 big time.

Of course the first major question here will be, is Mendes leaving Pinocchio to direct Bond 25 and complete his trilogy? The director was an inspired choice to helm Skyfall and crafted one of the best Bond movies ever, and while he returned to direct Spectre, the follow-up didn’t quite match that high bar. There was talk early in the development of Spectre of Mendes directing Bond 24 and 25 back-to-back, but that faded quickly.

Sources tell The Tracking Board that Mendes’ Pinocchio exit isn’t linked to Bond 25, but the next Bond film is indeed heating up.

Well, given that Wonder Woman's U.S. box office was $412 million and SPECTRE's was $200 million, I wouldn't expect Warners to be afraid. Plus, WW generated more goodwill and positive word of mouth. And, the sequel will be coming out a little more than two years later, so Warners and the sequel has momentum and buzz in the U.S. market.

Just to be clear, I am not saying Bond 25 will do bad or anything like that. I'm just saying Warners would consider Bond 25 less stiff competition compared with Star Wars Episode IX.

I agree and I think they don't really have anything to be worried about quite frankly, at least based on what we know so far. Hopefully there are some positive surprises in store for us with respect to B25.

Maybe I need to be more direct --

It's extremely plausible that Sam Mendes could return for Bond 25 now.

  • After Waltz's remarks about how things went down on Spectre, of one thing I believe we can be certain: while either Waltz or Mendes may regrettably return, they will most certainly not return together. Take your blessings where you can get em.

Mendes was always going to be the most likely director once Craig announced his return. I have been suggesting this for some time now and am surprised that folks didn't (and still don't) recognize this.

A few weeks back we discussed that Disney had contemplated purchasing some assets from Twenty-First Century Fox. Comcast has just approached Fox for those same assets (which includes the Entertainment Division and content), which could suggest a bidding war is in the making.

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/comcast-approached-21st-century-fox-over-acquisition-interest-1510869129?mod=e2tw

In my view, this would be an opportune time for the hedge funds to unload MGM (given the merger/aquisition mania in the market and this sector).

Maybe (perhaps foolishly) they him at his word.

Direct the next movie after Skyfall? The thought made him physically ill.

Then, he likely got a big raise and, voila, he's suddenly artistically inspired again.

After SPECTRE, he said -- again -- he was done. A BBC interview in 2015. He said something similar in 2016.

"I'm a storyteller. And at the end of the day, I want to make stories with new characters," he said.

Except when it comes to Bond.

I saw those interviews and I think his comments were based on an understanding that Craig was out (and I firmly believe Craig was indeed out at one point).

To me, he never seemed as definite about it after SP as he was after SF, and we know how that turned out.
    ---

I wonder if the Comcast/Fox deal (if it goes through) means that Universal is out of the running for B25 distribution, given they are owned by Comcast. If they get Fox's entertainment assets, they will own some superhero entries and may not need Bond.
