@RC7 seriously, what’s more pretentious is that you assume just because someone loves QOS that it’s a “wrong” opinion somehow. There’s nothing pretentious about preferring something less popular over something else more popular.

I didn’t say it was a “wrong” opinion, I don’t dislike QoS, but the idea that Forster represents the best of the era, so much so he should return, is laughable to me. Shouldn’t we be wanting to move forward? Boyle is a far more exciting proposition.

So to be clear, I’m not calling out QoS fans as pretentious, I’m suggesting those who position it as some sort of creative zenith are. Just my opinion, of course (no need to throw a hissy if this is you).

QoS it’s my favorite as well. By a wide margin! Especially compared to the last two.

Ah man if only they could get Marc Forster back

This opinion always smacks of pretentiousness, far more than that apportioned to appreciating SF. A bit like lauding what is obviously a band’s most mediocre album as their misunderstood classic.

There are also those who appreciate them both. Are they extra pretentious?

    See above.

    I'm with you mate.

I'm afraid I can't buy into this revisionist thinking that QOS is somehow now an undisputed classic, which seems to me only to have come about through people's disillusion with the bloated and self indulgent Mendes era.

Back at the time everyone was were smashing it for its lack of plot and unfinished script (not really EON's fault but nonetheless), its terrible editing and its constant, incoherent action scenes (see the flying boat thread) that never give the story a chance to breathe. And let's not forget it also has arguably the worst title song and opening credits and by far the worst henchman and gunbarrel.

But now its apparently an absolute gem of a film because of, largely it seems, its short run time, to the point where some people are now suggesting its actually better than CR itself (which only has about an hour of pure Fleming material in its locker so how could it even hope to compete)?

In the last decade I've walked out of the cinema feeling extremely deflated twice. Once was with the shambles that was SP and the other time was when I went in pumped for the follow up to the stunning CR and came out after watching QOS.

Dont' get me wrong - it has improved on repeat viewings and it is better on a small screen but still needs another 20-30 mins of story and plot to separate the relentless action, most of which seems to be there just for the sake of it. Craig is very good in it but its not that good a film and doesn't really deliver a worthy follow up to CR, more of a final coda.

I also really cannot fathom the notion that what the series needs is Forster back at all.

Anyone who sees a lack of plot in QoS might be better served with watching Bonanza.

As a QOS supporter I can never pretend that it is better than Casino, Skyfall or any of the early Connery Bond's, Majesty's etc etc.

*But* on the other hand it does not deserve the absolute slaughtering it has gotten from the fanbase.

It is not a stone cold classic, nor is it the worst Bond film ever.

There is a lot to love in it
    - Craig is brilliant with IMO his best Bond performance, possibly the best Arnold score, a great Bond girl in Camille with a Moonraker (the novel) like ending for them, beautiful locations, the opera house scene, the Siena scenes, The fantastic location for the climax, the emotional closure of Vesper's death for Bond, amazing clothes for Bond, and a Fleming like story but updated to fears of the modern day)

But there is a lot to not love too
    - editing is too frenetic, a villain who is really the henchman, henchmen who aren't really henchmen, a story that needed one more act to really flesh it out.

I would watch QOS over all the Brosnan's and Moore's any day of the week.

The Craig trilogy of CR, QoS and SF are all distinct and bring something new to the table. I think after that, people had there fill of digging into the characters psyche, and wished for a return to formula. In that respect, SP does at least make an effort to satisfy those fans, but the results are left wanting.

Did the Eon executives move to Pinewood yet? They were supposed to begin pre-production sometime in May 2018.
I notice your pertinent question hasn't been answered yet. I'm curious to know as well.

I recall reading somewhere (and again, it must have been here) that they were ready to start in April.

I don’t think QOS is Better than Casino Royale but it’s certainly close. I like the direction it was taking the series so yes i would be excited if Forster was directing because I think he gave us an interesting bond film and I don’t care much for the mendes films myself.

I don't see any of the Craig films as undisputed classics and my liking QOS isn't remotely revisionist as I enjoyed it from day 1.

I appreciate the Craig era for being a vast improvement on what came immediately prior. But as a fan I still find it wanting. I don't find myself particularly drawn to rewatching any of them.

As for belatedly finding fault with Mendes, I think I've been pretty consistent in saying since SF came out that he was taking the Craig era down a dead end.

However, once travelling that road to nowhere I'd rather be watching Spectre than Skyfall.

I will be intrigued to see in years to come how these films are enjoyed. It's entirely possible that reputation at the time of release sticks. In which case QOS may always be seen as rubbish by the casual fans. Bit like OHMSS and TLD - not that I think QOS matches up To either of them.

I certainly find much higher rewatch value in the classics pre-1989. I'm not sure why that is, but I think it's the light adventure element which keeps me coming back. They have a breezy 'feel good' quality.

I'll add GE to that from the Babs era.

Again, when I’m stating that QoS has a real and valid plot I am not expressing gut feeling. It is their obvious to see for anyone and if somebody is not able to do so he actually might not be into the right movie franchise.
And my I feel sorry statement was squarely directed at Panchito for his statement that the movie has no plot hole at all.

Personally I like the water plot in QOS,the way they are planning to sneak in and control all of S.America's water supply intrigues me.
As does the very real situation that water is the world's most precious resource, not oil.

Add in Greene,Beam,Elvis,Medrano et al,and it makes a great film to me.
    Nice and grounded.

But they do nothing with it. They don’t sell it in any way, it’s just background noise. We get several generic images of native Bolivians and an arty shot of a tap.

QoS certainly has a plot. Whether it was properly fleshed out or realized is a different conversation. Could it have done with a bit more exposition? Definitely, but there is a plot there.

It is indeed grounded and more adult than the slightly more larger than life and cartoonesque approaches of the two Mendes films.

Having said that, the box office numbers speak for themselves. In this era of superhero fare, perhaps this sort of grounded and realpolitik driven thriller isn't what the public wants. Certainly not at $200M+ a pop. If it was made for $50M, then it would be a different conversation, like the following year's The International (highly recommended by the way).

Absolutely! Even if I encounter an evening here and there when I have a hard time getting into a Bond film, I can clearly feel the next morning that it did something good to my unconscious. The combination of beautiful holiday locations and adventure is unbeatable for me.

They do a lot with it, just in an artsy way that isn´t for everyone. QoS is like a remix of a traditional Bond film.

Do you find it hard to sympathize with people feeling thirsty and then not being able to get water because it costs an arm and a leg?

Its a fantastic modern day spy plot that makes sense and feels threatening

I don’t agree. The idea might be good in principle, but the ‘threat’ isn’t translated to the screen effectively.

    Quite.

Objectively it's better than most of them but that indescribable Rog factor elevates his era to a level QOS can't quite get to.

It's probably better than LALD, TMWTGG and AVTAK but struggling against the rest.

All day long Sir. Sheer, unadulterated entertainment. If you don't have fun watching MR you are probably dead.

LALD used to be a favourite when I was a kid but I just find it rather meh these days. Everything about it just doesn't seem as good as it used to be.
