Wasn't a fan of the art on #5. Only one more to go, thankfully.

I think the art was the least of its problems, but rather the writing and especially the characterisation of Bond.
In 1-4 there wasn't even much characterization at all, especially in 2 & 4 he felt like a supporting character in his own story. In 5 it was all about him and his thoughts, and oh Boy... The less we talk about it the better

Getting back to the Casino Royale adaptation, I notice a lengthy interview with Van Jensen has been posted online from the International Journal of James Bond Studies. The IJJBS is the first academic publication I know of that is devoted exclusively to all things Bondian.

Just read The Body #5. Wow, this title is really dragging down my enthusiasm for Bond comics.
    What are Dynamite doing?

    Apparently.
Unfortunately they still have not announced a next series after The Body. Lets just Hope The Body is not the last of them. That would be one ugly final nail in the coffin.

I hope IDW Publishing gets it after them if this is indeed their last.

I hope IMAGE gets to do Bond some day, rather than IDW.

IMAGE has constantly delivered quality work by people like Ed Brubaker and Mark Millar. Currently, my favourite comics are in their hands.

Haven't read that many of the recent Bond comics (those early titles were good), but an Image published Bond comic with Ed Brubaker writing and Sean Phillips illustrating would be interesting. Also, if such a thing was to happen, Philips would be perfect for the covers:

I like Mark Millar, don't get me wrong. But, I don't think I'd like him to do Bond. He'd be doing what Warren Ellis would do on a large dose of cocaine. Lots of blood, super-vulgarity and might even include highly exploited pornographic elements, so no... I don't want Millar doing Bond.

Any word on a Felix Leiter Vol 2? I really enjoyed the first volume.

Millar did do Bond. He called it Kingsman and whilst I enjoyed the films and the first trade paperback of comics, I'm quite fine with him not touching Bond proper.

Yes, I know. And I enjoyed the comic a lot back when it was just called The Secret Service but I don’t want Bond to be like that at all. Kingsman as a film franchise is great and all, but I don’t want Bond to be like it in the slightest. That’s what the Spy Kids movies are for.
  • I read Vargr upon it's release but I really didn't know what to think of it. I don't know if it was because I found it strange to see a Bond-adventure in pictures instead of moving visuals and audio, or if I didn't like the story. I did however recently buy CR hoping to appreciate that one more. Since it's my favourite book I think I will.

I thought you might. Millar seems to be heavily in favour of deconstruction, too, and forcing characters to act out of character for the sake of plot (Civil War).

Not Dynamite, but Bond-comic related...if anyone wants to buy original panels illustrated by John McLusky for the Daily Express Bond strip, here's your opportunity.

Wish I could spend £200 on a McLusky original! One of my favourite illustrators.

I'm beginning to think that the Dynamite Comics James Bond is cancelled. Think about it. We haven't gotten any news for a while. The sales have been going down. Where's the Bond Origins series that we were supposed to get last fall?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Live and Let Die and Moonraker from them with Van Jensen and Dennis Calero. However, I think we'll get lucky as Dynamite has the license from Ian Fleming Publications for 10 years since 2014/2015. Hang on everyone, always have hope!

It's not helped by the fact that there hasn't been a Bond movie in cinemas since 2015. Big comic sales nowadays are helped tremendously by their movie counterparts. If Bond went back to a 2 year release schedule, or even 3 years, then the Dynamite comic sales would be flourishing.

I have the very same suspicions, @MaxCasino. And The Body feels like a rebellious flip of a finger at IFP for some reason. Who knows what's taking place behind the scenes? I mean, think about it, we were supposed to get a new series set during World War II that explores the beginning of Bond's spy career within the Naval Intelligence. They delayed it from Fall 2017 to Spring 2018, and now we're way past the date.

It's a bit upsetting to be honest. I have so far enjoyed pretty much all of Dynamite's Bond comics. They hold up well amidst a lot of other output from, say, Marvel or Image or Titan. I too have hopes for LALD, MR, ... adaptations. CR was good stuff. But I guess that comics will remain "niche". And Bond comics maybe even more than anything else. Shame. Star Wars has since 2015 gotten 200 or so issues published through Marvel and IDW, and is still going very strong. But, as pointed out by @TR007, we have also seen four Star Wars movies released since 2015, versus only one Bond.

Ooh. I am enormously tempted by the final Casino Royale one. Love the way he draws Bond.

(The trick is to tell yourself it's an 'investment' even if you'd obviously never sell it on...)

I haven't read it yet, but I have observed that lot of people strongly dislike The Body serie. So what is/are the main issues(s) you have with/against the Kot's story ?

Ales Kot has apparently never read Fleming. He has no understanding of the character of Bond or what he means to his fans.
There is zero Bond Flair, or style in his writing, no trace of formula. This is just a feminists or Millenials wet dream of how to deconstruct Bond. The whole time Bond just feels like a victim of his circumstances (typical millenial thinking)

Also the whole book Deals with characters that have no place in a Bond story, Nazis, Suicidal feminists, plus anti british sentiments and overall bleakness.
And mostly it's just boring as hell.

This is the most tonally off Bond story i have ever read. He could not have missed the Mark more. If this had been an EoN Movie, the franchise would be dead right after.

I'm not sure that Néo-Nazis haven't a place with Bond, but thanks for the answer. Can I ask you what he "not understanding of the character of Bond" ?

Bond usually is a Symbol of masculinity as we are all aware. There should be a coolness about him, a guy you would want to be like, or have his confidence. I don't mind an occasional darkness or edgyness, i actually embrace it.
But Kots Bond has none of that, he comes off like an idiot who gets outsmarted by everybody, is an emotional and weak wreck who is not in control of his life or the circumstances he's in and
pretty much becomes Suicidal in the 5th issue.

By the way, i agree that Nazis should not necesserily be off topic for Bond. Diggle used Nazis in Kill Switch to great effect.
But in The Body the Nazis become center stage and the whole issue feels like a completely unnecessery political lecture (the message of which every Person with half a brain could figure out for himself)

The whole thing with The Body baffles me how Dynamite and IFP granted it. Adding to that we don't have a new announcement made for the franchise, the only thing I could suspect is this conspiracy theory that does seem real to me - Some arguments and conflicts have been made behind the scenes between Dynamite and IFP, and this was their way of hitting back at IFP without the latter having the ability to do anything about it. I mean, it might seem stupid and far-fetched on the surface, but would you have any other explanation?

Methinks Dynamite's license is revoked. And The Body was a last flip of the middle finger at IFP.
