Craig looked great with the gloves, and with the dinner jacket.

Every tenure has an expiration date. I feel like they could have squeezed a fifth Craig film in 2018, but if there is another delay, and we don't get Bond 25 until summer 2020, then they should just recast. 2019 is already pushing it as it is.

To me, this felt like a very natural ending of an era, and I think they could (or should) have recast after SP. Craig has simply not been "my Bond", just like other people here feel about Brosnan.

This is how bad SP is, I don't buy Craig wearing those driving gloves as something his Bond would wear. His predecessors, sure but him? Nope. It just feels inauthentic and forced.

One of the reasons why I don't buy into the common thinking that the ending of SP was a good/natural send off for him. It's mediocre at best and plagued with odd touches that negatively distract from an already disappointing narrative. Craig deserves a better send off than that - the same way Brosnan deserved a better final film than Die Another Day.

you can't always get what you want

    Rarely, in fact.

I can’t believe we’re really griping over Craig wearing driving gloves. Good God...

Have these auditions taken place since Boyle left the movie? Are they seriously casting without a director?

Might be that EON just want to do all the casting decisions themselves, and that the director they hire will just have to work with what he gets…?

That's not one of the things that's way up on my list of SP issues, to be honest. What I've never understood though, is the point with driving gloves in general (unless you're a race car driver or something).

I wear them. It aids grip and also protects the steering wheel.

Why are they doing casting without a director? Surely they would like some input in that.

Craig is my Bond and I'm 44 so grew up in the Moore era. I just can't get excited at the minute for the post- Craig era. I just hope the theory of delay means more time to polish the script pays off. I stand by my wish for Craig's Bond to be seemingly killed off. It's only a film so characters can be resuscitated! Holmes and Reichenback falls anyone?

Casino Royale would have been a good finale for Craig. Quantum of Solace, same.
Skyfall would have been a good finale for Craig.
Spectre would have been a good finale for Craig. They're all really organized that way so far.

    Predictions:
BOND 25 will be a good finale for Craig.
BOND 26 will be a good finale for Craig.

Regarding dislike for Craig Bond with driving gloves, in a white dinner jacket, or driving a DB5: I don't have those limitations. They can do all those in the next one, fine with me.

I hope we see the DB5 AND a new Aston in Bond 25. I don't mind Bond having the classic DB5 as his personal vehicle and I'm not quite sure why the furor exists on these boards for it. Every time I saw Skyfall in the theater (4 times) it got applause, even when I saw it two months after its release!

James Bond cliffhanger ending teased for next 007 movie after Danny Boyle quits

The article states that filming was originally scheduled to begin in December but it is now expected to commence in January. It seems the plan is still to stick to 2019.

Also, despite the large festival presence, Yann Demange's latest film is getting tepid to poor reviews:

I assume he may not be the 'frontrunner' we expected.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Metro isn’t the most reliable, right?

Protects the steering wheel how? Stupid question, but I have to ask.

The thought of having any fabric between the hands and the steering wheel feels uncomfortable to me. It mirrors my preference in shoes when driving, come to think of it. I usually prefer shoes with a thinner sole, just to get a better feel of the pedals.

If you have an older style classic with a wood or plastic steering then gloves prevent hand oils from getting on the wheel. Over time, it can impact its appearance. Similarly with a leather wheel, gloves can protect the finish over time. I have a classic car which I drive occasionally, and it has a thin leather wheel which looks like new still, so it must work.

I see. I can see the issue with hand oils against wood/leather steering wheels. I drive a Honda myself with a plastic steering wheel, so the need for driving gloves aren't necessarily there at all. All I know is I would feel uncomfortable doing so!

Demange won't get it at this point, it's going to be a British unknown imo.

What British unknowns are likely candidates?

why would they willingly give it to an unknown? they need a safe pair of hands at this stage

Which option do you think is most likely:

    A. They have a director already locked down, just waiting for a good time to announce.

    B. They have someone in negotiations, will soon be a done deal.

    C. They have a shortlist of names which they are pursuing with interest from candidates.

    D. They are still searching for candidates.

    My guess is on B.

I think A or B, myself. They could at least had someone in negotiations at the time the Boyle announcement was released, and the continued casting rumours could lead us to believe that too. Only speculation of course, but it wouldn't surprise me if EON got things a lot more covered than many here thinks.

Perhaps they decided to be the safe pair of hands themselves this time? The lack of information that is getting spread suggests that in any case they keep it a little closer to the chest than in recent years. The whole affair with Boyle proves that quite a lot was proceeding without getting published. They could very well arrange some castings and then contract a director who´s going to work with what they put in front of him. Not every film production runs the same checklist. Of course any director would probably prefer to have a say in casting, but that by no means has to mean that a good director can´t work with an already existent cast.

Would it be technically possible for them to make BOND 25 without a director?
  • I can’t understand why folks are going nuts over this new director Yann something. Because of some new film called WHITE BOY RICK? I never heard of it but just looked it up and I have zero interest in it (and I’m actually a huge fan of the 80s). But what does this film have to do with Bond anyway? What else has he done??? Why would this guy fit the Bond mold anymore so than any number of other non-high profile directors out there??? Is it because he’s the only one who’s willing to touch this franchise at this point? Seems to me if they’re looking for a “drama” director (any kind of drama) then they could just start alphabetically and work their way down the list of drama directors. What makes this guy so special?

Just offer Campbell an obscene amount of money to make something as good as ge or cr & be done with it already.

I don't recall anyone going nuts about him or saying that he was special. He was on their list on account of his flick '71, which was a very sharply directed, tension filled piece of work. On the surface, there's nothing particularly special. He's just a fresh face who happens to have a very efficient directing style, and is classed as an up-and-comer. We could do with a bit of that energy, I think.
