How should Skyfall reference 50 years of Bond movie heritage?

Mendes has said the film will make a few references or homages to past movies. It is not clear what this means yet and I expect most people don't want to see DUD style references, or another Agent Fields covered in oil... I am hoping the references will be more about tone and style. The images of Bond in Scotland with his DB5 are obviously a ref to Sean in Goldfinger. Hopefully the homage doesn't go any further than these publicity shots though.

They have already done it? They are subtle ones and not in ya face as awas the case with DAD.

If by "few references" he means having the other 5 Bonds in a quick cameo, I'm all for that. Otherwise, the less the better.

EPIC YES!!! I would die a happy man if they did that...

Obviously I'm in the minority but said it before any inclusion of past James Bonds in this years release just doesn't sit right, I know it's the half century celebrations and a big event etc but bringing Lazenby, Dalton, Moore etc into this in a cameo capacity just seems not advisable, they should remain in the past and out of Skyfall, feel safe enough though that I'll get my way, as there's little to no chance of this even seeing the light of day later this year

Been through this before and 'homages and recognition to past Bond films' for anniversary etc, but if they keep it to a minimum and not go overboard like previous I think that will be sufficient. But please, and I emplore them, no Bond girl coming out of the sea like in Doctor No, Halle Berry almost killed the series with that, it's Honey who is the star of that, it should never have been tried again, they failed dismally.. :-<

am i the only one who liked that nod to goldfinger? - i mean, if nothing else, i thought the imagery of her covered in oil, in a room decorated in black and white was pretty powerful... from a style standpoint.... anyways..

i like subtle nods - ie: the business card that Bond hands the guard in QOS has R. Sterling on it - a nod to TSWLM.... nods or homages that are a little more 'blatant' are okay, but used sparingly - as in, maybe only doing it once.... if you do it too much, it becomes distracting (i'm looking at you Lee Tamahori)

Only if it's subtle. R.Sterling was ok, but everything else in DAD and QOS was lazy

Having the gunbarrel at the beginning would be a good start to reference them. But apart from that subtle references please

Well, what can we think of, scene wise that would be ok? Like the business card .. what else?
I just had a thought: would it be too much for Bond and Q (since we know Q is in this one) to have a brief scene like this : After Q explains something, Bond glances at the counter, sees a sandwich and reaches for it slightly then just brings his hand back like he's remembering the former Q (which scene is that referencing, with Pierce??) and gives the slilghtest of smiles, then moves on (no dialog about it though). I'd like something like that. It's subtle enough for me and would make me smile.

But it would imply this was not the first Q Bond has met. Would that make sense (maybe) ... he might have met Q before he became a 00.

as far as a scene with Q... i would like to hear a line close to Desmond's classic "I never joke about my work double-o-seven." ... that would be a nice little call back IMO... they did it with Cleese (in a way) in DAD, so why not again..

Yes, that would be nice, too.

As SF is the 50th anniversary of Dr. No, I would like to see Ursulla Andress in a bit part, like someine sitting at a casino table or bar or something.

Yes! She is still recognizable and that would be nice for me to see, too.

Hmm. I'd like to see how creative our forum members would be for showing Lee Tamahori: In the background, like outside we see thru a cafe window - have him dragged through the streets and then lynched by a mob of Asian schoolgirls (in school uniforms)?

Or him in the background asking a policeman for directions...dressed as an asian schoolgirl ;-)

They should honor the past 50 years of Bond films by making a bloody good movie. Not more and not less.

No, I appreciated the idea but like different things in QOS, it had no particular impact because Fields went from "I'm so sorry" for tripping Elvis to covered in oil. In Goldfinger you knew Oddjob was in the room. In this scene, if let's say the viewer had seen Greene sneaking up on her and later Fields in a predicament being questioned by him it would have gone a lot better. I don't want to digress any further into the QOS script deficiencies, it's an open book.

Better yet, Tamahori getting tips from Martin Campbell and the ghost of Terence Young on how to direct a Bond movie
    :D

Here's the best way to pay tribute- let DC be the Bond we all know. We've got Major Boothroyd back (Wishaw will have to earn the Q moniker before I'll call him that)- no need to introduce them. It should be like they know each other already. Bond will now get gadgets again, maybe one he's used before would be a nice nod. They seem to have him involved with different women- check. If one of these actresses named is Moneypenny, same deal with Q, carry on, I just PRAY their exchanges don't resemble those of Brosnan and Sam Bond, just awful dialogue that is better suited for Austin Powers and not a Bond movie. Otherwise, I haven't given a lot of thought to the subject, most likely because of the overall result the lat time they tried to get cute about an anniversary while nearly everything else went horribly wrong.

=D> Exactly. They don't really need to throw in referrences and nods. I don't even think the DB5 should return.

I prefer no references at all.

That said, we already have a thread covering this and the funny thing is, @Getafix, you actually commented in that one. ;-)

Sorry folks! See you over there. ;-)
