MICKEY MOUSE-A MYSTERIOUS MELODY (2016) by Cosey. Very enjoyable read, even if it involves a manuscript about a trip to Pluto, written before the planet was officially discovered.

I'm currently reading DETECTIVE COMICS #1000, backed up pieces of the Dark Knight's history from the hardcover collection, DETECTIVE COMICS: 80 YEARS OF BATMAN. Much of DC 1000 is top rate stuff, including new stories illustrated by Neal Adams, Steve Epting, Kelly Jones, Tony Daniel and others...with new stories written by Denny O'Neill, Paul Dini, Scott Snyder and Brian Michael Bendis. The theme throughout much of this volume is Bruce Wayne's ongoing attempts to forge a new family for himself in the aftermath of his parents' murder by a petty criminal. This is of course one of the classic heroic origins in all of comics...and the single page illustration by Amanda Conner, portraying the Batman perched on a rooftop gargoyle, watching over the city, while the ghostly forms of his parents strive vainly to touch him one last time, is for mr one of the most moving images in the whole issue. I went for the Steve Rude '30s style cover, but it was a tough choice. I could have gone with the variant covers by Bruce Timm, Steranko, Frank Miller and many others....

But as rich an offering as DC 1000 may be, the 80 YEARS OF BATMAN hardcover is an even meatier publication, with the first appearances of Batman himself, Robin, Two Face, the Riddler, Clayface, Batwoman, Bat-Mite, the Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl, and many other landmark stories as well. Just about everybody who's contributed to the Bat mythos in any substantial way is here: Bob Kane, Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson, Shelly Moldoff, Dick Sprang, Carmine Infantino, Denny O'Neill, Neal Adams, Frank Robbins, Dick Giordano, even an entry by the Steve Englehart/Marshall Rogers team and a long-promised, long delayed tale by legendary science-fiction/fantasy scribe Harlan Ellison.. But perhaps MY favorite aspect of this book is the substantial slices offered of the title's various back-up features. The Crimson Avenger -- from before Batman was even created! Slam Bradley -- by Superman's creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster! The Boy Commandos -- by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby! Air Wave, Pow-wow Smith, John Jones (soon to be known as J'onn J'onzz) the Manhunter from Mars, and even the Paul Kirk Manhunter by Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson. Believe me, if you'd like a compressed history of comics in one volume, you could do worse than to pick up 80 YEARS OF BATMAN.
