I recently bought the Humble Bundle collection, what would folks say is generally seen as the best of these Bond comics?

    Dunno, what's in it?

    The files I have are:
    Origin 12
    Origin 11
    Origin 10
    Origin 9
    Origin 8
    Origin issue 7
    Case files Vol 1
    Live and Let Die
    The Body Vol 1
    Vol 2 Eiolon
    Issue 12
    Issue 11
    Issue 10
    Hammerhead
    Issue 7
    Issue 9
    Issue 8
    Casino Royale
    Felix Leiter
    Origin Vol 1
    Vargr
    Kill Chain

Bit random, not sure what the orphan issues are about.
  • "The Body" was pretty uniformly panned by everybody on this forum so I wouldn't recommend starting there. I personally enjoyed the "Origin" series so I'd recommend checking those out. "Casino Royale" and "Live & Let Die" are pretty faithful adaptations of the Ian Fleming novels, and hey -- you can't go wrong with Fleming!

@mtm I view both Hammerhead and Kill Chain to be the perfect melding between Connery-Bond and Brosnan-Bond, so I would recommend starting there if that appeals to you.
  • Personally, I really loved the Felix Leiter miniseries, both narratively and aesthetically. Unfortunately it's not directly a Bond story, so not really a good starting point. If I put forward the quality of the artwork, it is because this is one of the flaws of other publications, often for lack of regularity on the part of the artist, as in the case of the Casino Royale graphic novel that, otherwise, is very good because of its faithfulness to Fleming. Eiolon remains a possible and good introduction to this continuity.

Fanatical are selling a digital Dynamite collection. Only one Bond comic in this one and it's the Casino Royale graphical novel adaptation. £11.89 for all comics in the collection including CR.

    Here is the link:

    https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/dynamite-action-bundle

Not a great saving if you're only getting it for CR. On Amazon it seems the digital version is about £12.40

Vita Ayala would make a great name for a Bond character.

After the fantastic issue #4, this was a damn long wait.
And again we have switched artists, but in my opinion Brent Peeples does a great job picking up from Erica D'Urso. Great eye for detail, Bond looks cool and slick, theres glamour and sexappeal, maybe with a harder edge this time around. Overall i enjoyed this issue, and Mr. Big is just as charismatic as he was in the LALD graphic novel (from what we got so far). I think this series has massively improved and for once i'm really intrigued to see where this keeps going.

Agreed, this issue was a huge step up!

I'm glad to hear this series is improving. I've only read the first issue and wasn't that impressed with it, but it's great to see Dynamite get back on track. I'm still waiting patiently for the second volume of Origin to be released in hardback as that has been my favourite Dynamite-Bond since the 'glory days' ended with Kill Chain.

The end of James Bond #6 who change (again, and still without any reason given) from July 8th to 29th... Very very appreciable...

BTW, I don't know if someone noticed copies of these old foreign (and pretty rare) Semic comics of JB that became aviable theses last months...

THe LALD comic finally arrived. I've only read a few pages so far but I love the drawings and the colours are so much better than in CR. Good that you guys motivated me to buy this one. :-bd

What is it that people dialiked about "The Body"?

I'm new to this forum and the Bond comics (and in a way comics in general) and I enjoyed that one. Or at least I wouldn't put it last out of the ones I've read (more or less all since Vargr) .
So could you maybe give a tl;dr of the problems people had with it?

Well i can only speak for myself here, first of all Ales Kot the writer (the name was a dead giveaway, since you're german you'll get it ;) ) is a deeply unpleasant, raging SJW, if you've been following him on twitter...

As for the story, he wasn't even attempting to use any recognizable Bond Forumula (of which there are plenty of variations by now) instead he used it as a springboard for his "opinions", and finally completely mischaracterized James Bond by giving him his own millenial angst in some misguided attempt to "characterize" him...

I love deeper characterization in my Bond stories, Daniel Craig has done a better job than anybody at this imho... But Kot missed the point entirely. My bigger concern is why the hell did IFP and Dynamite approve of him?

Great news and looking forward to it, even though the inclusion of Greg Pak makes me a bit nervous to be honest.

    Thanks for the answer.

I felt it was nice to have a change to the "formula".

Especially in the serialized comics I sometimes feel the stories are a bit "by the numbers". (This might be because I mostly read omnibuses, so there isn't a break between issues. Or because I read most of the Dynamite Bond series in a rather short span of time.) And I think the comics would be the place among the "official publications" for some experimentation.

But I get that a) people don't necessarily feel that way and b) can think that "The Body" failed in executing that change. I am certainly not saying it's the greatest, but I don't have as negative an opinion as you and others seem to have.

I mean the lack of formula is the smaller of my concerns.
It's true that these 6 issue story arcs tend to feel a bit formulaic at times.
Personally i wish, for the sake of variety, that we could go back to the model from Serpent's Tooth and Permission to die, which was 3 issues each, with app. 48 pages.
Somehow that "reads" and flows better.

As for the Body i just felt that Bond was grossly mischaracterized. I did like issue 1 and 6 though. But between that everything about it felt off, and the art was pretty subpar too.

    Got you.

And we're on the same page concerning #1 and #6.

I'm currently reading the LALD adaptation and am a bit on the fence about it. The story is good, but I haven't read the novel, so can't speak on the adaptation. I don't really love the art and sometimes feel it's a bit out of synch with the text, which is strange.

The adaption is as close to the book as you can get. Honestly, it's so text heavy that i would assume it's probably 80% of the novel in there.

Did you read the CR adaption? Art is subjective of course, but i find it much better than the CR adaption, and it really makes the comic come alive. From what i read on this thread so far, most people seem to agree. Maybe wait and see how you feel about it once you finished it. It might be a slow burn for some.

In case anyone was wondering what the hell is happening with the rumored Origins Vol. 3,
You are not alone. So is the writer/artist behind it.

Waiting for Dynamite to make up their minds on where to take James Bond is as depressing as waiting for NTTD.
