So far I'm not convinced however I say someone starring in from what I understand fairly obscure sports dramas and historical series has more chances to be noticed by the people that matter than some car advert.
He lacks something, that I can't put my finger on.
He is ugly.
Let’s be honest though, the next Bond will get some sort of initial criticism about their looks regardless of who they are and what they look like!
That's not an excuse for bad casting.
Are you an authority on that?
True. But I think that’s not necessarily something we here can truly get a sense of before we’ve actually seen these actors play Bond. But ultimately yes, you need to get the right actor (obvious as it sounds).
I don't think the general public will care. I honestly don't think they care. I could be wrong but history would suggest I'm correct. The 'Craig not Bond' 2005/2006 fraternity were small in number and didn't galvanise enough support to wreck Craig's Bond career. People went to see his Bond films. Skyfall made over a billion dollars and Craig looked kinda rough in some scenes:
...but people accepted his appearance. I doubt the next actor's appearance will be a problem for film goers. Fans argue over the look of Bond but the average Joe doesn't care. Barbara Broccoli took a calculated gamble people wouldn't be too bothered by a shorter, less good looking Bond actor and her gamble paid off. If it worked for Craig it can work for any actor that may seem too blokeish or unconventional for the role (assuming he is a decent actor and can act the part to an acceptable standard).
“It’s a fun character. Whether I’m ruled out of Bond because of this or not is up to Barbara Broccoli and Mr. Wilson.”
He needn’t worry. There are many other reasons why he’ll be ruled out.
I do vaguely remember when Craig was first announced back in 2005. It did come as a bit of a shock seeing someone who looks-wise came across as very different to Brosnan (the craggy face, being under 6’2 and blonde etc.)
I do remember his eyes really being the thing that sold me on him initially though (I honestly don’t think you can get closer to the novel Bond’s ‘cold grey blue’ eyes than Craig’s) and then later when the trailer came out it was his voice. It all fell into place by the time I saw the film, even if on first glance/when those initial publicity photos came out it wasn’t something I could see. For me when he was onscreen he was James Bond. I’d even argue it was that ‘rough around the edges’ quality to him mixed with that natural suaveness/charisma which helped sell me on him (I’d argue it’s the same story with Connery).
No doubt there’s always an element of the actor needing to be distinctive looking in some way, and they’ll always need to ‘win over’ audiences with their performance. Still though, it’s not something we always can see initially.
I think Bond became monogamous because of Craig's ugliness. You can see the difference between Casino Royale and the rest of his movies.
They were playing to his strengths.
How old are you Deke? I'm guessing under 25? The age where the brain is hopefully still developing?
Older than you, I guess.
Then that makes me weep.
I have been wondering the same…
“ Bond became monogamous because of Craig's ugliness”? What a bizarre thought.
Ok 😂
Weirdly I thought that too mate
True. And maybe from me too. I wasn't sold on Daniel Craig when he was cast. But this time I don't think there's many presumptive heirs. There were none either when Craig became Bond, but some actors had a rather important fanbase: Clive Owen, James Purefoy, Gerard Butler, etc. We don't have the same phenomenon now, at least I don't think so.
Exactly!!! You've got it!
It's funny you should say that mate, because it always reminds me of that James Bond illustration commissioned while Fleming was still alive.
Yes, he looked awkward. I noticed this too.
He was the grumpy Bond for a reason.
Yes! True! There's also a certain shot of Dalton in TLD that also looks like this.
Are you saying he looked grumpy in that shot? How?
No, he looked weird here. He looked better as the grumpy Bond. ;)
Casino Royale was not written with him in mind.
