Well, someone just said on another thread that the James Bond character becomes public domain in 2035, just 19 years away.

If this is the case, then EON don't have long left as exclusive producers of Bond movies. And at their current rate of output, the next Bond might only get four movies out before its curtains for EON.

I heard it's more complicated than that. If they extend the license and the copyright ownership, they might exclusively own it for as long as it goes... I think...

Ah, so it's not so straight forward?

But in Canada they're already working on a period TV series or something aren't they because their copyright law lapses after 50 years.

Not straightforward. No. But, a friend of mine who works in the film industry told me that by 2040s someone can make a film adaptation of Casino Royale and even use James Bond in it with the condition the film shouldn't be advertised as a James Bond film.

In Canada, however, the character is in public domain in every format, whether literature or film. I heard they were working on a film inspired by For Your Eyes Only and wanted to strike a deal with China for box office gross and purpose and whatnot...

I'm still hopeful that Bond 25 can improve the franchise and propel it forward into a new era, if they can find the right actor.

It will, and they will find the right actor. I'm certain of it. I'm also certain we will have a directional change back to a more traditional Bond style film, but without the overemphasis on tropes. EON learns from past mistakes, and the most recent effort is still fresh.

The role of Bond has, not once, been miscast in the history of the franchise. I trust EON will choose the right man for the job.

A taste of things to come. Within a couple of decades we'll be awash with 'new' Bond actors. Everyone will be able to have a crack at it.

I really hope Campbell returns. He's the only guy to introduce a new Bond since 1987. There's no doubt in my mind that he could work his magic and revolutionise the franchise for a third time, especially when you consider how different CR and GE are from each other.

Introducing a new Bond is a completely different task from merely continuing an already successful run of films. I'm not sure I really trust anyone else with it.

Well, like everything before him, Bond will be joining Sherlock Holmes and the other iconic heroes, too...

What fascinates me, though, on a separate subject is that Simon Templar/The Saint is still owned by the Leslie Charteris estate... Perhaps they pulled that license and copyright extension act... :-?? Perhaps Eon are willing to do that, too?

Honestly the prospect of that is actually really exciting to me. We could see some really cool, radically different interpretations of the character (disillusioned old man Bond? Maybe a drama about a corrupt manipulative Bond who's selling secrets? 50s period piece or maybe even WW2 Bond? The possibilities are endless) while still having the EON films with all the traditional elements that we know and love (gunbarrel, title sequence, all the iconography). And the extra competition would keep EON on their toes too.

Bond wouldn't sell secrets and be corrupted... It's not his character... That's only Alan Moore's propaganda and his hatred of the character.

Yes, but there is 70 million different brands of fake Coca-cola. People still buy the real stuff.

Yes, but would EON be able to afford to carry on making big budget Bond movies? I doubt the numbers would stack up if there were alternative franchises popping up left right and centre. The exclusivity would be lost and there'd be huge competition for BO.

We might get a brief burst of lots of Bond films but then I fear it might in the long term lead to even fewer.

Perhaps EON would reemerge triumphant as the true guardians of Bond, but I think something would be lost as well.

I don't think the issue is as cut and dried as some people are suggesting. Copyright and intellectual property laws are constantly evolving and changing. In the grand scheme of things visual media in particular is a an absolute minefield. I have colleagues and friends involved in all sorts of legal disputes re. ideas, formats, concepts etc. Having produced the films for over 50 years stands EON in pretty good legal stead in what is, as I said above, a minefield. It certainly isn't going to be the case that it will lapse and any Tom, Dick and Harry can start releasing Bond content, very far from it imo.

I hope you're right and I tend to agree. Older characters such as Batman and Sherlock Holmes I believe have remained protected.

Mass Bondage would simply cheapen the franchise since everybody and his dog could make a Bond film.

I obviously do not have a clue about the legality of it all. Not claiming I do.

UPDATE: I can't get the link to copy on my phone but go to copyright/Cornell.edu or Google copyright and public domain. It summarizes the conditions. It's not that easy.

Still think Luke Thompson could pull it off but he would need more experience onscreen as he's mainly a thespian and a few more years. I know I am among the ones who suggested him last year but I'm less and less convinced about Turner. He has the look but not sure about his acting skills.

No, we need a Thespian like Lazenby and Moore.
Lazenby's lack of acting skills would have cost him in the long run. Moore was an experienced actor. And there is nothing wrong to be a thespian: that's how you learn. Many actors who played in Bond movies had careers on stage.
  • The case for Tom Hiddleston solidifies.....

I've always been a tad hesitant about him in the role.....but I'm liking his look in this film.

It's out in March, so expect TH's publicity-hungry team to gear up the Bond rumours around that time....maybe we'll actually know if Craig will return by then.

I think he's too nicey nice for Bond. Need someome of a bit more brawn who can play mean and assertive. If Hiddleston shouted at you, you would just laugh.

That's why Aidan Turner is perfect. I'd say he is capable of lightening things up from the current Craig Bond, but keep the intensity and the edge. I think if their is a downside to Turner, he is slightly too slim at the moment. But who knows what will happen in the next few years...

Turner has the look but does he have anything else?
