Nice!!
- Regardless of his race, he's worked with numerous top tier talents (the kind of directors most Bond actors get to work with once they get connected to the franchise),
- he's a genuine A-list star
- he produces his own films
-he's directing his own movies
- has his own hit TV series,
- he's a televison personality and fronts his owns documentaries-
- he's starred in numerous big-budget Hollywood movies
- he's addressed Parliament on diversity matters
- he has an OBE
I think Bond needs Idris elba a lot more than Idris needs it.
Regardless of age, if Eon were to recruit him, it be a very smart move. They'd be guaranteed a big box office, especially considering the public support and momentum to see him cast.
So just like Sean Connery and Roger Moore? It's called being a movie star. Why's that a problem now?
Bond wasn't really Connery's personality, wasn't he trained by Terence Young? Dismissed as a brick layer and stuntman? (Note: that's not me dismissing anything)
Surely Moore's personality was Bond though? Since he used an almost identical one in the Saint (just slightly tougher that time).
My opinion though is that Elba's personality is Idris Elba, not Bond.
If only that ended the conversation.
It's coming too, and sooner than you think. Forget OO7. Soon we'll have 355 (no idea where they come up with that number), a female fronted spy franchise (coincidentally distributed by Universal) which will be headlined by Jessica Chastain. It will also star Fan Bingbing, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz and Lupita Nyong'o as spies from different countries who all team up.
This has been proposed and is a great idea; a hero needs a worth opponent. Picture an Elba/Craig fight, as well as the two of them verbally sparring.
Chastain, Cotillard and Cruz in a spy film? I'll watch that!
I agree. He has “it” - whatever “it” is. If he was younger he’d have been the obvious choice.
Interesting point but Fleming actually wrote Bond at a time when the empire was coming to the end. Bond doesn’t represent the heyday of empire but it’s twilight - Britain refusing to go meekly into the night etc.
I’m sure this is true and a good thing too. Just as Hollywood is waking up to the fact you can have strong female centred leads and stories about women, so it’s realising that black actors can be popular at the box office - shock horror!!
Not wrong. Comparing anyone to Connery is always risky but Elba definitely has the animal grace that made Sean such a magnetic screen presence.
And that at the end of the day is all that ultimately needs to be said. As with so many other past hopefuls, he’s now too old.
If you can justify this for artistic reasons and in a way that he was the best person that they auditioned fine but otherwise I don't see the point and for the record I'm left leaning and not anywhere near the right.
I think most people on here agree with you.
Tokenism and casting a black actor for the sake of it in this context would be self defeating.
I think what I and most people on here are saying is that if there’s a black actor who’s the best for the role then the time would now be right to cast them.
We had a female M, black Felix, black Moneypenny, blond Bond. We’ve even had Rory Kinnear as Tanner.
We can deal with a black Bond.
Nobody goes into a Bond movie wanting to watch it just to see Felix, Moneypenny or Tanner even. So changing them is fine since they are minor characters. Bond is the main course and shouldn't be changed for the sake of it.
I do actually think Elba would have made a good Bond but the timing means it’s not to be.
In theory it sounds great, in reality it got a huge amount of hype when it didn't have a script or even a writer.
I am, uh, Bond. [Sniff]
James Bond, in all his Hegelian glory. [Sniff, sniff]
