Hamilton is only as good as the material he’s given. If he directed as originally planned for SUPERMAN and worked with the Mankiewicz re-writes, it probably would have been about as good as LIVE AND LET DIE.
Now if Hamilton ultimately directed with the Newman & Benton draft*… it probably would have been as big of a mess as TMWTGG That draft is the infamous one that included the Telly Savalas cameo telling Superman “who loves ya baby!” Here it is:

Very true. And much of that magic is lost in later scores that recycled Williams' themes but didn't manage to use them as effectively. I tear up all the time, listening to Williams. E.T., STM, and the SW scores have some of the most emotional musical cues I've ever heard.
Absolutely.
Many, many composers with us and not have contributed to the magic of films, really too many to list here quickly, but John Williams and the late Jerry Goldsmith were like the two titans of musical scores. We are blessed that John is still with us!!!
I think his Superman score may be my favorite of his. Which sucks that he never returned to do a full score. But oh well.
I bought that set it is fantastic, worth every penny to me in any case. Superman 3 and 4 remasters are excellent and elevate the films.
I bought the Steelbook version of the set.
III is another very uneven film, IMO. I'll start with the good stuff: the opening titles. Whatever film we're in, the comedic timing of every gag is spot-on! Seriously, it's like Buster Keaton oversaw the whole thing. Brilliant.
And then things go wrong. On the one hand, we are given a somewhat serious, somewhat romantic film that takes place in Smallville and eventually shows Superman fighting his dark side. On the other hand, we are given Richard Pryor, a ditsy blonde, and an evil supercomputer. That's not about balance, that's about lumping two different films together. I don't really have a particularly high opinion of The Salkinds, but when Warner Bros people creatively interfere with a DC property, you just know it's going to be bad.
Overdosing on Pryor and his particular brand of comedy was the wrong move IMO. A good comedian though he was, I doubt this was the type of film to include so much of him. Imagine if Jim Carry had taken over half of GE, or if James Corden had taken over half of SF.
I used to equate this film to Batman Forever (and IV to Batman And Robin), but I have since re-evaluated those Batman films while my issues with Superman III and Quest For Peace have only grown larger.
We should probably be thankful that WB rejected Salkind's original pitch that involved introducing Supergirl to be a new love interest for Superman.
This blog entry gets into great detail about that version of SUPERMAN III.

But yeah, the III that we got is basically what we could have gotten with the first film if Donner and Mankiewicz hadn't come in and straightened things out. I do like the Smallville stuff with Clark reconnecting with Lana, but it has no bearing with the rest of the film.
There's one bit of humor at the end where Perry congratulates Lois for exposing corruption in the Caribbean, and Lois says "You know, I knew I was onto something when that taxi driver kidnapped me." That actually sounds more like a fun movie than SUPERMAN III.
It does, doesn't it? :-D
I like elements of 3 despite its issues, I blame WB for the way the film turned out, WB thinking it was a bad idea for DC villains to feature in 3 as they thought main stream audiences would not care for foolish.
Despite what Salkind claims, I highly doubt that’s why WB rejected his pitch.
I have seen some reviews of the 4K set that mention some picture and audio defects is that true? Apparently the final shot of Superman 2 is misframed and the audio track for Superman 4 has the wrong score?
Also, odd they didn’t include Superman Returns this time like they did for the Blu ray set ( possibly of all the crazy stuff that’s come out because of Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey maybe? ).
They messed up the ATMOS audio mix for Superman IV, Superman The Movie is the same as the previously released 4K version which I also own. some have complained abut a couple of things with the set, overall I am happy.
I have that many versions of the films I am not too fussed, if they improve the first movie further I will buy it.
Impressive! Was that created using A.I?
No, CGI.
Really excited for these!
Cool, one of the items that was included in the 4K Christopher Reeve Superman steelbook Fortress boxset I purchased was a mini version of Superman 78 comic.
It's pretty much a universal thread for all things Superman. At this point, by the end of the year, the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny thread should go back to being just Indiana Jones for the time being. Maybe when Superman Legacy gets closer, they will change the thread title.
From the illustrator Kerry Callen.
There’s a guy on YouTube called APRICEPRODUCTIONS who has taken it upon himself to remaster and redo the bad fx shots from Superman IV.It’s such good work that a lot of fans have called upon WB to let him remaster and re-edit the whole film.
Some examples..
They have done a great job there.
But you never know.
Yeah, so much better than the final film's muddled ending.
