Making the choice to put Jones in a big film now would just be distracting.

I think it’s time to get back on topic, please. I’m just as guilty of going off on weird things. This thread is about Superman, not questionable human beings.

Sticking to Superman, I wonder how much casting has been done for Legacy. It would be a shame if the strikes canceled the movie. Or if just Lex Luthor or General Zod are the only villain again. It has a lot going for it. I think that some of Superman’s supporting cast outside of Smallville and the Daily Planet.

I think it’s easier to watch movies with Kevin Spacey as he most often plays a villain anyway so it doesn’t make much difference as to what he’s done in real life ( Although wasn’t he recently cleared of all charges in the UK? )

With Miller,he is supposed to be playing a SUPERHERO.There is a responsibility to be a good role model for young people with that and after everything he’s done,it’s hard to ignore.

He wasn’t particularly good as The Flash anyway. They should have fired him as soon as that incident arose where he attempted to strangle someone ( This was before filming on the movie began I think )

    Fair enough.
Yes, as with Batman, I would love to see some of the lesser-known villains show up too.

Brainiac would be a terrific villain to use.Even though he’s probably a Justice League level threat.

The best incarnation of him in my opinion was the one voiced by Jeffrey Combs in the Injustice 2 video game

I agree, Brainiac in Injustice 2 is one of the great comic book villains in gaming. Up there with Arkham Joker or Spider-Man PS4 Doc Ock. As for an Injustice 3, I could go either way. It's a great 2-part story/game. However, there is great potential for more greatness in a third game.

I feel that James Gunn will surprise us (for better or worse) with the villain(s) of Legacy. I remember being disappointed when Zod was announced as a villain for MOS, and then being arguably the only one. Also, for the longest time it seemed that Zack Snyder was lying about him, when the word was already out. That being said, Michael Shannon did a great job, both in MOS and The Flash. Snyder honestly did some great castings (Most of MOS, BVS, and a lot of the DCEU in general). The writing material often let them down.

Yesterday, Batman The Animated Series celebrated its anniversary of airing for the first time. Today, Superman The Animated Series celebrates its anniversary of airing for the first time. Probably one of the more underrated DCAU series, I think WB should really look at STAS when adapting Superman in live action movies. There’s a lot of great material (particularly with its villains) to look at for influence.

Glad you brought this one up too! I loved marathoning this series and need to do it again sometime. So many great villains not named Lex Luthor just dying to get used for new movies! That being said, Clancy Brown’s Lex is just as definitive as Mark Hamill’s Joker - superb.

Yes those two are immortalized as their character’s voices. Never get tired of hearing them.

That was pretty good, I would have included Gerard Christopher.

I looked at the channel and also watched CHRISTOPHER REEVE Restores the SNYDER CUT that was funny.

I'm honestly surprised that The Adventures of Superman (1952-1958) didn't ever use Lex Luthor and the Toyman as villains in the show. They could have been easy to adapt on a TV Budget. Maybe even as recurring villains.

Censorship was pretty harsh back in the 50s. TV execs didn’t want to scare off sponsors by featuring a rogues gallery of fantastical supervillains that might potentially scare kids. That’s why villains were often relegated to simple crooks, corrupt politicians, and mad scientists. This is from the same era where Lucille Ball’s pregnancy being addressed at all on her show was considered taboo.

Obviously that all changed by 1966 when a big part of the appeal of Batman was his rogues gallery. I always wondered if George Reeves had been alive in the 60s would they have been able to have him make a special guest appearance teaming up with the dynamic duo. Just a fun what if.

A lot of comic book fans and myself are begging DC to have a crossover between Batman 66 and a version of Superman. It can't be the Christopher Reeve version, as his version has been confirmed to be in Michael Keaton's Batman universe. Earth-789 is that world. Superman 50s would be the best bet. Please let it happen DC!

Batman doesn't look happy with Superman, in that picture.

Also, this would have been interesting, it's sad he probably wouldn't have lived to see it.

    No surprise.

The Blu-Ray of Superman: The Complete Animated Series is currently $20 at Amazon. That's $3.33 a disc!

So I don't know if this will be interesting to anyone, but I recently watched the Reeve Superman films for the first time and wanted to write down my thoughts.

I had never had any interest in Superman, because he always sounded a bit lame: he has every power there is, just keep him away from those magic rocks. My only exposure to the character was Batman V. Superman, and that wasn't promising.

I ended up watching the classic series because I'm a big fan of Gene Hackman, and good god were they fun! I had no idea Christopher Reeve was so good either.

    I'd rank them as such:

    Superman II
    Superman: The Movie/Superman III
    Superman IV
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut

The first three movies are all wonderful, but on the whole I think I like Richard Lester's slightly less epic and more comical approach. Superman is a great movie, but I'm not sure that tone could have been kept up for long. It's not fair to treat the reassembled Donner Cut as the film he would have made 40 years ago, but it was dull in comparison to Lester's film, and didn't seem to promise that things would have been better if it'd been made in the first place. (Incidentally, I'm one of presumably very few people who saw this before Superman II, so I definitely gave it more than a fair shot!)

Superman III was surprsingly good in my opinion, and had the potential to be my personal favorite, but when Gus designs an omnipotent computer on a napkin, they kind of lose me. If it had been Hackman's Luthor, I could roll with it, but Gus was introduced as a barely employable slacker at the start of the film, so it was too ridiculous. But everything else up to that, including Reeve's fantastic performance as Jerk Superman, was outstanding.

Superman IV was not good. But absolutely nowhere near as bad as I'd been told. The worst thing is the flying effects (which is a pretty big deal), but Reeve and Hackman make it worthwhile, and the production value was better than expected, with some of the non-optical effects even proving decent. But the film is nowhere near the first three, obviously.

Anyway, great series on the whole, and I can't believe I missed out all those years! Will definitely check out Superman Returns (it's in the box, after all), but I'm still in no rush to experience Man of Steel....

Tied for second with III. Probably not a popular opinion, but I really enjoyed (most of) III....

SUPERMAN RETURNS was one of the few films in my life that I was absolutely OBSESSED with before it had come out. I grew up with the Reeve films, and the idea of it being a sequel to the first two sounded promising. It’s absolutely one of those films I wanted to like more than I actually did, convincing myself that maybe I’ll like it better if I watch it more, and that maybe the sequel will enhance what was set up. This was all due to having been so invested in the movie that I couldn’t just let myself be disappointed.

Now I’d probably rank it on the very bottom of the first five films because I just find it miserable to watch. SUPERMAN IV is very bad, but it at least has Reeve and it’s mercifully shorter.

The Donner Cut absolutely does not work as its own film, and it doesn’t even work as a sequel to the first film.

I actually made my own hybrid cut of the film. The way I see it, neither version of the film is perfect, but I do believe there’s a better film between them. One of the big issues of the Donner cut is that it deleted way too much Lester footage that was crucial. For example, we see Lois and Clark being brought to the entrance of their honeymoon suite, but just as they enter the door we cut away!

Another issue is the that Superman never makes an appearance until 40 mins in when the boy is rescued at Niagara Falls. So in my cut I actually keep the Paris sequence because it at least serves as a reintroduction of both Superman and Lois as characters and as a couple. After the villains are freed from the phantom zone, THEN we jump forward to the Daily Planet with Lois realizing Clark is Superman.

As for the ending, I actually stuck with the memory wipe scene not just because turning the world backwards was already done in the first, but also because the sequence was never finished. As it is in the Donner Cut, the time reversal actually comes out of nowhere and doesn’t make sense in context. If Donner had completed II as intended, we would have seen the super villains making a grand world tour. We see them destroy the Eiffel Tower with their heat vision. The skylines of Tokyo and Moscow are engulfed in flames. The world is practically decimated. Superman decides to reverse time as a way of restoring the world, but that also means losing the time he spent with Lois as a result. But in the cut it never feels earned. We don’t even get that moment of Superman deciding to reverse time, because it was never filmed!

But another reason I kept the memory wipe scene is beside I think Margot Kidder is doing some really great acting there, and the chemistry between her and Reeve is absolutely palpable.

Which means I absolutely keep the last scene with Superman arriving at the White House with a new roof, apologizing to the president, and vowing to never let him down again. It’s a great ending.

    3) S2 (Donner Cut)

I’d actually put II as the best of the bunch, but only for my hybrid cut.
