It is difficult to say, a lot of people jumping to the conclusion it will be a slow number. But Sam Smith does two very different style, slower Dirgy soul ballads like "you know i'm not the only one" but then he does more upbeat stuff like "Money on my mind" at his live shows he covers a whole range of songs from Whitney Houston to Nirvana. He's a Tenor Vocal Range is key range is G#2. As a fan of the themes I would suspect it will be something brassy with Strings and free standing bass. Reckon he will take a real classic approach. My only issue with the title is having the word wall, he may use words like fall, crumble, stumble and stand tall to flow in to the line writings on the wall
=))
hah yea :))
Music is more divisive than anything else (even film posters!). One man's classic is another man's 3 minutes of torture.
Music video confirmed too - also "I wanted to make the most classic, timeless Bond song...and an epic love song"
Love song? We haven't had one of those for a while.
Didn't we hear a similar remark back in 2012 when Paul Epworth and Adele were saying they finished the song in...about an hour :-P?
;)
Says nothing about today. says 25th sep
I really don't like any of his songs. And I don't like the way he sings either which is why I can't figure how he can fit with what I've seen so far from Spectre. But IF he delivers the right Bondian tune for the movie I'll be fine with him.
Exactly.
do in 20 minutes. ;)
Well said, Ed Sheeren wrote "thinking out loud" in 20 minutes it's been a massive hit for him. If you have the talent you know your music structure Verse, Verse, Bridge Chorus Verse, Verse, alternative bridge bigger chorus for finale BOOM! WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!
At 2 mins 18 seconds:
;)
scrawled on the monument to fallen agents, seen in the trailer ?

The entire writing process of "Writing's On The Wall" seems very similar to "Skyfall". Both Adele/Paul Epworth and Sam Smith/Jimmy Napes got involved in the writing process of the film very early. I wouldn't be surprised that Smith/Napes really started brainstorming with the cast/crew already back in November. So that they could go ahead with the song in a very early stage. Hence the link between the song title and the memorial wall on the destroyed MI6-building.
I expect a similar breathtaking crooner/soul-ballad as well. I sincerely hope so.
There's also quite a weird comparison I just made:
The 1960's:
--> "DOCTOR NO"s song "Three Blind Mice": Not a hit at all. Used throughout the film.
--> "FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE"s song "From Russia With Love": Forgettable crooner/Eurovision-esque song. Still no hit.
--> "GOLDFINGER"s song "Goldfinger": Instant hit! Memorable melody, event song
--> "THUNDERBALL"s song "Thunderball": Going down the Bassey road with this time a male version of a Goldfinger-esque song.
The 2010's:
--> "CASINO ROYALE"s song "You Know My Name": Not a hit at all. Used throughout the film
--> "QUANTUM OF SOLACE"s song "Another Way To Die": Forgettable rock song. Still no real hit.
--> "SKYFALL"s song "Skyfall": Instant hit! Memorable melody, Oscar winner.
--> "SPECTRE"s song "Writing's On The Wall": Let's see, Sam Smith confirmed it's a..love song? Going down the Adele road, with this time a male version of a Skyfall-esque song?
I agree with everything you say apart from this, @Gustuv. Forgettable crooner! His song for Born Free won an Oscar! I know how you love the Oscars so I'm surprised by your oversight on his film song legacy. Also a FRWL song that peaked in the UK Top 20 is hardly a flop, especially as Bond wasn't known back in 1963 for its title song, or end credits song in Matt Monro's case. Bond had yet to catch on Stateside so a single record release was unlikely at the time.
The fact that George Martin also wanted to work with Monro, alongside John Barry on four seperate musical score occasions, plus Quincy Jones (The Italian Job) elevates him higher than your withering dismisal. I don't think Monro deserves this.
Agreed. This is one of my all time favourite songs on film.
Yep! FRWL is a great song and Matt Monro was far from forgettable!
Here's to hoping it's a great song and that he can put it over. Far from reassured, but happy to be surprised. [-O<
Thank you.
I am so fed up with people losing their shit based on what they think a song/film/tvshow/video game/'insert product of choice' is going to be before actually seeing or hearing it. I understand the notion that we can only base ourselves on what we know of the artist, but just wait a couple weeks before it's released. And if you still don't like it after listening to the tune, then fine, go ape shit.
I personally like TLD, but not so much because of AHA (anyone could have really sung that song), but because of Barry's music behind it.
So if they have a really good hook with some serious Bondian smooth flair (rather than the cringeworthy eardrum scratching/scraping on AWTD) then I think this can elevate an ordinary (but certainly not a sub-par) vocal imho.
