i prefer the "lunatic" angle to him, i must say... removing all of that i feel hurts the presence of his character on screen - that he's capable of doing anything to anyone whenever he feels like it.. i really got that sense about him in the Oct draft - so now, seeing as how they removed all of that upsets me a little because now, it seems like they just turned him into a brat that is all grown up..
no.. i loved that - in my head, it made the imagery creepy and cult like.
I'm disappointed too. I absolutely love that masked orgy scene at the big house in Eyes Wide Shut and the similar meeting of the zealots in the Ninth Gate. Both scenes had rich farts with too much time on their hands getting up to no good in big mansions and both scenes were suitably creepy. It would have been really great if they'd kept that in. Oh well.
The Nine Eyes angle reminds me somewhat of The Summit Five Affair, the first episode of The Man From UNCLE's final season. The plot involves a conspiracy to turn UNCLE "into a useful subdivision of Thrush," as the episode's villain puts it. That's not exactly what's going on in SPECTRE, but it's fairly close.
And with the disapperance of the masks, we won't have Bond escaping with his wits (by instantly pointing to another masked man "It's him !" to cause a few seconds of confusion), we will have Bond escaping because he runs fast.. But as all this happens just before the "Roger Moore chase scene", maybe it was deemed to be too much fun in two consecutive scenes - in stark contrast with the introduction of Mr Hinx just before ?
And well, I'm not a native Englih speaker, but do the Mickey Mouse "joke" work to an English hear ? With or without the masks ??
It works better with the masks than without. It also works better if the line is actually delivered in Italian and one just see's the translation text in subtitles in English on the screen (which is what was planned I think).
@$" bit was dropped it would be more suitable.
it's really a line that they could do without...
IMO, and i am going to give my own little bit of revision to this scene.... they could've kept the mask deal - have it be given to Bond by Lucia as "the way to get into the meeting" - that it was her husband's.... or..... have Bond pull up to the meeting, he sees people putting on masks and entering the building - so he then quietly and quickly, knocks out someone who was on their way in - hides the body - assumes his mask - and enters..... someone wearing a mask should not be further checked by bouncers at the door - if they have a mask, and are wearing it, then they obviously belong..... thus, this negates the purpose of the dumb mickey mouse line - it helps keep the tension building, instead of (IMO) deflating it a little with a stupid line.. and we get masks back.
- Gunbarrel at the start, already in your face about announcing the return of 'traditional, classic' Bond
- Day of the Dead PTS also screams 'classic Bond,' including Bond's exit to the window ledge followed by his response of "Won't be long."
- Day of the Dead PTS is a massive opening for Bond film, nodding to Thunderball and Moonraker's festival scenes as well as providing intense action.
- Can't wait to see how they handle Sciarra's demise on film, shocked me upon reading it.
- The MTS and its running theme of both the past and the octopus sound amazing.
- The first scene with M and Bond is hilariously delicious. I like Fienne's M already. Bond's sarcasm is also a plus. Brings out shades of Connery.
- The shared friendship/camaraderie between the new-age Bond and Moneypenny is a nice new spin on an old classic.
- The cameo, brief as it is, is a nice call back to tie events together.
- Q scene is up to scratch. I have a feeling this new, improved take on Q will work quite well. Also, nice reference to Casino Royale during Q scene.
- Note: Perhaps the DB5 from Royale was taken into MI6 custody like the winnings from the poker game and is not his personal car as we believed it to be? Would explain how it keeps popping up and explains it being in Q's possession.
- Q leading Bond up to disappointment over the DB-10 is hilarious. The budding relationship of Bond and Q is everything I wanted it to be.
- Rome starts out fantastic. The "Bond. James Bond." line is greatly used.
- The character call out after Bond seduces Lucia is a sight for sore eyes. Hopefully it stays.
- During the meeting, the Leader in shadow = excellent throwback.
- Entrance of Mister Hinx = Classic Bond henchman.
- The Palazzo scene in its entirety is fantastic as is the chase scene between Bond and Hinx. As with the shades of Connery before, the Fiat bit is pure Moore.
- End of the chase sequence = Mind. Blown. Such a classic Bond moment. Have a feeling I'll be using the word 'Classic' a lot.
- Bond/White reunion; a little bit of a letdown after all of the hubbub from Royale and Solace, but a loose end closed none-the-less.
- Hinx always smiling = creepy.
- OHMSS throwback = Clinic in a snowbound area
- Swann/Bond meeting dialogue is cold, reminds me of Fleming.
- Hinx taking Swann instantly made me think of Vesper's abduction taken to the next level.
- Bond chase/Q scene are tense, incredibly tense. Love the back and forth as well as the conclusion.
- The big reveal; Le Chiffre, Silva and Quantum were all tentacles of Spectre. As wonky as it sounded off the bat, in the sense of the script, I feel it works. Helps give the grand feel of just how big this organization really is and how far it reaches.
- Scene between Moneypenny/M is a game-changer. M is coming into his own, learning the hard way how the people he works with deal and trust. I get a sense of how M could've been handled as a possible traitor but as of now, this character arc fits the script better. M will always be good, no matter who is in the position. That never should have been debated.
- Bond and Swann in Tangiers - Swann is really beginning to remind me of a rebooted Tracy for the new generation; daddy issues, becomes involved with an evil organization, father and Bond make a pact involving her, Bond and Swann begin to attract each other... it's all too clear.
- Back at Whitehall, M is finally coming into his own. LOVE it.
- Swann/Bond in dinning carriage; Bond deflects her advances about a normal life but Madeleine's point is clear; Bond decided his fate by choosing the assassin life. However, they drink to new beginnings. New beginnings, indeed.
- Classic train fight, harkens back to FRWL, LALD and TSWLM with a modern twist. But Hinx? I think depending on crowd reaction, he may be back. He seems to be a bit of an extreme survivalist.
- Villain lair; of course! What a nice throw back to classic Bond.
- The plan reveal and the TVs are used to great effect.
- Oberhauser comes off as slightly deranged yet polite and highly intelligent, a scary classic Bond villain characteristic.
- Oberhauser's past is revealed during card game; definitely a shake up but I think I like it. His own tragic childhood to match Bond's.
- Destruction of the lair is swift. A little too fast, I think.
- Silva's actual connection to Spectre is revealed; interesting.
- M finally breaks down and admits he trusts Bond. The MI6 brigade is finally a team.
- Bond asks M how retirement was, I notice its in the past tense. Bigger things to come for the MI6 crew.
- Confrontation with C is too fleeting.
- Oberhauser's scars are revealed in full from forehead to mouth, that eye gone, a new take on the classic character.
- The escape from the MI6 building, the explosion, the final chase and the confrontation with our villain hits home. Bond tossing his gun, in my opinion based on reading this, feels more like he's risen above killing the man. He has overcome his demons and his past, Vesper's betrayal, Silva's destruction of MI6 and M's death... He is finally willing to put it behind him. I don't see it as him quitting, I see it as him putting those demons that haunted him finally to bed so that he can just get on with it.
- Q saying "I thought you'd gone" could honestly refer to anything from retirement to Fleming's old trademark of a fortnights leave. It's left ambiguous for a reason. It's an open-ended ending leading us into the final line of dialogue...
- ...which is yet another homage to OHMSS. Threw me for a loop, that's for sure. Didn't see it coming.
In my opinion, James Bond... and Blofeld, will return. MI6 is pretty clearly on the mend and in the clear with C being taken care of, Bond as a Double-O once again proved his usefulness despite the section being disbanded. Blofeld's operatives are never caught (that we see), he still has many bases as told to us by C, there are still plenty of tentacles lingering in the shadows that could've survived the aftermath of Bond's intrusion, Hinx (if still alive) could easily break Blofeld out... I think what we have here is the end of a story arc, but the beginnings of a return to Classic Bond with his Classic Villain. I don't think for a second all these homages that seem to be leading up to something bigger are only there for us as winks and nods.
if it turns into another critical and financial success like SF, no doubt EON will want to bring back the same crew yet again.... if they want Mendes back, and he wants to come back - it'll have to depend on his schedule again - he may want to do something else, to get away from Bond before jumping right back in... i think EON would love to have B25 out in 2017 - but if it means releasing it in 2018 to get who they want, then they'll wait, just like they did between SF and SP..
i personally am hoping for 2017 as well.
Could the PTS of Bond 25 be Blofeld escaping and exacting his revenge while Bond and MS on Honeymoon or vacation and she is killed? Forcing Bond back to MI6 to look for revenge properly playing out Blofeld killing Bond's Wife/Lover and he going after him like in the Blofeld trilogy that Fleming wrote with maybe Bond 25 ending in a way that the introduction of a new actor would be just right?
It strikes me having C mention about many other tentacles out there suggests this is setting things up for many entries in, even if Bond does kill ESB in a few films, no reason why Spectre can't continue to exist yes?
As for it arriving in 2017, would be nice but I think we are more looking like 2018, yes Mendes shouldn't be able to dictate his shooting schedule and hold it back but if SP does the billion as predicted BB & MGW will give him anything he wants to return and possibly end the Craig era.
they already did it with SP after the success of SF - thats really the only reason they held off until 2015 for SP.. they wanted Mendes back, and were willing to work around his schedule in order to make that happen.
and if Bond 25 is another success, i think EON will throw whatever they can at Craig to come back for a 6th film...
Based on my assumption, yes. This script, while closing off a story arc and ending many loose ends, still leaves a dangling thread. Especially for us Bond fans who know the original tales, who know OHMSS by heart. This is a straight-up modernized, alternate universe style re-telling of the Blofeld trilogy where as instead of 3 stories, we have 4 now; Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and the beginning of this film essentially equal to Thunderball in terms of the organizations slow reveal, the middle and latter half of this film is essentially the majority of OHMSS which leaves us requiring an ending. Shall it come with Bond 25 or later with another actor is the only question but they definitely kept Blofeld around and alive for a reason. They just got the rights to this character back, they aren't going to immediately kill him. The whole point of Blofeld is that he is Bond's Lex Luthor, his Joker, his Moriarty... to be rid of him so suddenly is simply outrageous.
But for all intents and purposes, I whole-heartedly believe they would never remake the classic films so this is as close as we are getting; Spectre = OHMSS, Swann = Tracy, Bond getting married = falling in love an seemingly driving off into the sunset which leaves us with that dangling thread....
I also wouldnt be surprised if Mr. Hinx returned (a la Jaws in TSWLM/MR) and Madeleine as well (although probably for brief moments, having the same fate as Tracy).
My interpretation of the finale is that Bond really intendes to leave the servisse .. so it has to happen something importante for him to come back (enters OHMSS ending ... Bond 25 beguiining).
Would have been perfect if Irma Bunt was still in the film.
Hopefully she'll be in Bond 25!
I agree with Hinx. He is likely to be back. While I agree that Madeleine is likely to have an unfortunate event at the start of B25 (it's the most likely scenario) I hope I am not the only one who hopes this does not happen. After all, it would then be much more like a remake of OHMSS, and I think I'd prefer it not be so. I'd prefer if they just forgot about her in B25, like they did with Natalya and all of Bond's babes from prior movies.
What could happen at the end of SP (and I think it would be great) is if there is a shot at the end of the movie, the Aston careens out of control and crashes. Then you are shown the final shot of the film. A bullet hole through glass (the SP poster shot). However, they don't go any further, so you don't know what happened or who bit it if at all. Now that would really increase anticipation and speculation for B25, don't you think! A real who shot JR cliffhanger........
They way the new films are set up though and how they keep referring back to themselves, especially in this one, it wouldn't at all surprise me if Bond 25 begins and we see Swann and Bond together, several months later, maybe even a year, and she meets a tragic end due to either Blofeld or one of Blofelds hired assassins with the PTS concluding with Bond either killing the assassin or extracting that Blofeld hired the hit; then the MTS theme could revolve around that. In fact, yes, I love that idea.
Sample: this 2012 story in the Los Angeles Times:
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/nov/14/entertainment/la-et-mn-skyfall-next-james-bond-movie-20121113
Quote:
"Sometimes there are external pressures from a studio who want you to make it in a certain time frame or for their own benefit, and sometimes we’ve given into that," Broccoli said. "But following what we hope will be a tremendous success with 'Skyfall,' we have to try to keep the deadlines within our own time limits and not cave in to external pressures."
Also, both Wilson and Broccoli like doing things other than Bond movies.
I think Bond 25 won't be out until 2018. Also, if their Edward Snowden project materializes, that could affect things as well.

The producers need to understand that the screenplay is the single most important aspect of just about every mainstream movie. They can have a great director and an amazing cast and crew on board, if the script sucks, then the whole movie will fail. I'm pretty sure Sam Mendes regrets signing up for a second Bond film, but I can not really feel sorry for him. He is a huge part of the reason 3 writers still had to be working on the script just weeks before the start of filming.
I don't expect greatness from Spectre and I'm hoping they will hire Chris Nolan to direct AND write the next one. He would show them how to deliver a great script on time.
That would be mazing. She would be percect! Let's start lobbying for her!!
