I even think Rosamund Pike falls into that category. She has a rather wide eyed expression on her face for most of DAD, and she is constantly overemphasising her lines:

"Hope it doesn't SHRINK when it gets WET."

"has Mr Bond been explaining his BIG BANG theory?"

But again is that the direction (and the classic P&W script)? It was her big break so a bit disingenuous to be looking down her nose at it.

I think ANYONE would be looking down their nose reading the script for DAD. She was probably just glad of the work.

Whatever happened, it worked. She has somehow managed to dodge the millions of cream pies hurled at Hallie Berry over the years, even though I would say their performances are about equal all things considered. Sometimes being sexy girl number 2 is a blessing in disguise.

Youre right I suppose in that she is pretty hammy although that's totally down to the script and direction I think.

I'm reminded of a single shot when Bond is escaping in the ice sled of Graves, Miranda and Vlad that looks like an episode of James Bond Jnr come to life (although I have to confess to a guilty pleasure in enjoying the look Graves gives to Vlad when he says 'he beat your time').

Its interesting just how often the secondary Bond girl or femme fatale Bond girl is more memorable than the main one.

Jill: Not saying she's overall more memorable than Pussy but for 3 minutes screen time she makes an impact (well painting her gold does).

Fiona: Blows dull Domino out of the water. Even if Domino took her bikini top off right in front of me I think I'd struggle to stay awake she's so personality free.

Aki: Has a bit more about her than innocent Kissy (although let's never forget it's Kissy's heroic swim that saves the world).

Andrea: A far more interesting character than gormless Mary and with better writing they could have had her as the main Bond girl with the final act Scaramanga killing her and Bond confronting him on the island to get revenge.

May Day: Struggle to count her as a Bond girl but he does shag her (braver man than me) so I guess she counts. Again a far better character than bog standard damsel in distress Stacey.

Xenia: I love Natalya but it has to be said that Xenia steals the show.

Yeah, I guess being the secondary Bond girl relieves you of all the responsibility and allows you to just kick back and have fun. I would much rather be Xenia shooting sh%t up and speeding around in fast cars, than be Natalya and have to sit and mope on a beach.

@TheWizardOfIce Fiona steals the show, but Domino as the 'kept woman' had me going from the start. She does kill Largo as well, saving Bond's ass.

As for Andrea you're right. However after the recent events of OHMSS's tragic ending, they wouldn't have gone with such a finale.

Something that bugs me are actors who seem to think that Bond is some kind of pantomime (perhaps because they look down on the franchise) and produce silly OTT performances that IMHO help to undermine the film. Obvious examples for me would be Alan Cumming and John Cleese. I am sure there are more..give me time.

    Jonathan Pryce?

I know for a fact Steven Berkoff felt this way and only did Bond and Rambo to fund his obscure theatre work but I can't bring myself to criticise him as his performance as Orlov is, to quote the aforementioned Mr Pryce, just too 'delicious'.

I would add Toby Stephens to this if it wasn't for the fact I'm sure his ham was under direction from cretin Tanahori. He's clearly a Bond fan as evidenced by his numerous radio plays of the Fleming novels.

Do we think Chris Walken felt this way? He's quite OTT (but fantastically so) but the 'star bracket' on the poster is an odd stipulation.

It always felt like Bardem was pretty pantomime villain esque but more because he thought that was the genre rather than any disdain for the series which he always came across as loving in interviews.

I guess being over the top doesn't mean you hate the franchise or see it as something less worthy than an oscar film.
For some actors its just they way they do their job and its their acting style like Al Pacino( who i think would make a great Bond Villain ).
His acting style is very theatrical over the top very much like Pryce and that doesn't mean he hated doing scent of a woman or the devil's advocate his two coolest most fun performances from him.

The more i write about it the more id love to see him( Al Pacino) as Bond Villain maybe not for Criag but for the Next actor definitely yes.

but it's funny how the biggest fans of the franchise and the least pretentious are the ones end up doing their best.
Example Izabella Scourpco she said she would have been more than happy just running ina bikini because being a Bond girl was an honor and she many fans favorite Bond girl.

Actually she said in an interview at first she was slightly disappointed that she wasnt the glamourous and always sexy Bond girl bit latter liked her role.

And well even though he is not my favorite Bond Roger Moore. Who ive read he felt the Bond Sean played was too pretentious and serious and by not taking the character seriously at all really left his mark.
Ive said it many times if we talk about being original as Bond no one did it better than Moore. He is the only who doesn't resemble any of the other 5.
Pierce had some of his sense of humor but still was much more like an action hero, Moore is the only one who made films pure comedies and that's truly original.

Connery is overweight and scruffy in DAF. He looks better in NSNA!

Her certainly does. Particular in that potentially
excellent opening scene, which is only marred by that horrendous title song and the "twist" that it's only a training exercise.

The song was one of the best things in that film IMHO.

TWINE might get a little too dramatic at times, but it's nowhere near the worst the series has to offer. I enjoyed seeing it on the big screen back in 1999, and I don't feel that different towards it in 2016.

TWINE is one of the most underrated Bonds in the series. Really can't understand the disdain for it.

Fantastic PTS, good solid plot, excellent score and a wonderful and sexy villainess!

    What's not to like?!!

Agreed. It's a rock solid entry and beats the crap out of QOS or SP. I know Denise Richards doesn't work but Robbie Coltrane and the fabulous Sophie Marceau more than make up for that.

    MR and DAD get a 4/10 but I don't hate them. If I hate a film I'd give it a 1, a 4 is just below average.

I blame Guy Hamilton. His 4 films rank quite poorly for me, the highest is Diamonds are Forever at 12 (I have a soft spot for it...it would be higher but I like 11 films more).

Reasons are similar to what you list for LALD but swap character names and action scenes
The Hamilton films are a bit eccentric. I subjectively enjoy TMWTGG the most, followed by DAF & LALD. Controversially, it is GF that I find dull as ever, apart from a few iconic moments here and there.

GF is pretty dull...it's kept afloat by its iconic moments

In TMWTGG I really love the moment (and the score) when Bond and Hip scramble out of the car when Goodnight says "I've got the solex too"
Agreed. Barry's score for TMWTGG is also quite eccentric, like the film, but similarly charismatic. Lots of great suspenseful bits in this score. Some of my favourites are:

    1. The score when Bond is waiting outside the Bottom's Up Club, including first seeing NicNac
    2. the bit when Andrea returns to Scaramanga's to put her jewelry back
    3. the part when Bond hides Goodnight in the closet with the lights out just before Andrea returns from the bathroom.

I don't get the hate the score receives. If this is Barry's rushed effort, he must be a genius because as a whole it's still better than any of the non-Barry scores, and even non-Bond scores

I think Barry was a genius, full stop.

As I've said before, my only real issue with the villains was that Kananga's death felt rushed so that we could get to the train fight. Barely a minute after Kananga bursts Bond is on the train.

Would you have preferred seeing them flee the island instead? His death still comes at the end of the movie during the finale, I don't see it being rushed at all. But, that's just me. If we're talking awkward segues, lately it has bothered me that we get the incredibly emotional finale that OHMSS offers...just for it to quickly and awkwardly cut to the upbeat theme song as Bond still holds his dear-departed wife's body.

LALD just had a cheap feel to it, like too much was done on set.

I agree about OHMSS (my favorite Bond film). And they fixed it with CR, when they added more scenes for the film to breathe before launching into the Bond theme.
  • I don't like how Craig's era doesn't feel like an era. Each film is radically different and there is no level of constancy in the general feel.

That isn't what bothers me. Each of the first three films does have their own feel, and I admire and enjoy that. What bothers me is that in the fourth outing, which also has a decidedly different feel, we are being asked to see them as one extended narrative. They work best in isolation (the exception possibly being CR and QOS, they can work as a unit).

Yes I don't appreciate that either.

I love both but nooo, that wont happen till the next Bond is in. Craig is the king of the world till the next bond is officially beloved in the character.
Sure there will always be Craig and Brosnan fans, all the actors get their solid fan bases which will love them unconditionally and won't be jumping into bandwagons but no Bond actor gets teh big backlash till they leave.

Pierce was generally thought as the second best to Sean till he left and Craig was succesful with Casino Royale.
So will see how Craig does after Bond 7 is in, till that happens he is still the king of the world

Well, I have noticed an increasing level of Craig criticism for a while now. All the Craig defenders have of course tried their best to qwell these, but the tides are turning on him quickly. After SPECTRE, a lot of fan reviews were calling for Craig to have his license to kill revoked permanently.

    Don't see it myself.

Craig is going to be a hard act to follow. Personally he had everything. The charm, the arrogance, the toughness. He was realistic in the action scenes and is a bloody good actor. I think he brought Bond to life and injected a much needed shot in the arm for the series.

Although I'm writing in the past tense I am hopeful he'll do just one more.

I think we'll probably see the support behind Craig disappear like we did with Brosnan. It's the natural progression of things - the shifting sands of Bondom.
