I agree completely @Villiers53. That particular shot only serves to show off the Omega, which is too thick and large for Craig's wrist IMO. The look he had in London in SF was 'ok' apart from the suit appearing a little snug. Some of it has to do with Craig's build as well. I don't think they did a very good job of making him look good in a suit in SF (I always thought the collars in particular looked a size too tight, and his neck veins were poppiing out of his collar). I say get the guy/gal back who dressed him for that final shot in CR with White. Pure 100% perfection in that scene, right down to the hair. The haircut is a shambles in above photo (it looks to have been fixed for SP based on early location shots).
While there's nothing wrong with wearing cuffs with a suit, or even without a tie (people do it all the time these days - it's a bit of a fashion statement), I believe Bond should showcase classic English style, and so personally would prefer cuffs with dinner jackets and barrel cuffs turnbacks with suits during the 2.5 hr or so movie. Just IMHO.
I've always said, when in doubt, rent North by Northwest or To Catch A Thief and watch Cary Grant, or of course early Connery. The gold standards. Can't go wrong.
Wont make it to the film, this is from his personal wardrobe and he was wearing this in New Zeland back in October/November. There are only two casual outwhere jackets set aside for the film both are by Tom Ford - one of which is a suede type leather with a fluffy collar.
I don't recall that. He could have worn commando pants instead!
The shirt fit, while definitely off, doesn't really make any point one way or another on wearing cufflinks.
Connery doesn't wear barrel cuffs in Dr. No, he has on turnbacks.
You are correct. That is a great look that I would like to return. Not sure if it would suit Craig though.
That is correct the Tom Ford relationship did not start until QOS. What actually happend was Tom Ford provided the casual wear in QOS i.e the polo shirt, the Harrington. When it came to Skyfall production needed so many of the same suite made in shorter space of time, they approached Bironi and they were struggling to commit. Jany Temime contacted Tom Ford with her dilema and he stood up to the plate. Tom himself got involved in the process, the rest is history as they say.
It disappeared for me as well, but yes that is the one. It is Brioni, they did all the CR suits, as well as shirts I believe. Note that this suit is actually a little of in fit as well, though not terribly. Also note french cuffs ;)
I quite like this look, it's one I use quite often, though I'd go for a button two and not three.
Thx. Then those Brioni suits are pretty impressive. He looked good on the Montenegro train ride as well.
Is it showing now?
That is an absolutely brilliant site btw. I had not seen that before. I'm going to be spending some time on there as there's some great info.
Something funny was happening, the first link I put up went blank on me too. Not sure what happened.
Yes, Matt is very, very good. Always a fun site to mess around with and he brings an overall knowledgeable perspective, not just a James Bond fanboy take.
The aesthetics of the brunch suit were pretty goodm though it had some of the fit issues the three piece did.
I have heard that part of the reason of the shift to TF over Brioni was lack of engagement on Brioni's part (ie, attention to fits, amount of suits, etc..)
The 1953 Rolex Oyster Perpetual might look good on a man older than 50, but it's a watch that would look ridiculous on anyone under the age of 40. As for the cigarette case and the lighter, smoking is simply not as cool anymore as it used to be.
I agree with you re: Craig's physique looking better in casual gear.
I think that the designers have to be a little more careful when working on the suit cut for him, or else he could come across looking more like a bouncer. Suits in general do tend to look better on the longer, leaner but still athetic body types without too much bulging muscle IMO. Ironically though, to me Craig looked best in CR, and that's where he had the most body bulk.
If he's wearing a suit in any action scenes next to that Bautista, I'm sure Craig will look better, because that guy looks like Hulk and will make Craig look very lean in comparison.
Precisely my point (as highlighted above). I don't think they've quite got it right with Craig yet. It's certainly easier if you have a certain height and build (not too built). However it's not impossible to correct for with another body type, it just requires some effort on the tailor's part.
There's a reason imo why those who model suits have a certain build. It's easier to make the suit look good on them.
Agree.
And to the follow on reply after yours, the one thing people always seem to really forget about, is that when it come to making someone look good, the physique is always number one. A well proportioned in shape person will always have a better look for a given outfit. People spend inordinate amounts of money on clothes and then can't comprehend why the still don't look like a model even though they have a gut and no chest.
This isn't about Craig per se, he's in shape, that's just a generality.
Actually @doghouse, we are both wrong the Dr.No cuff is called "a cocktail cuff" and was specially created by T&A for the movie specifically because Young thought links too chintzy.
He had a point!
Cocktail cuff is another name for turnback cuff.
