I would have personally thought it was a given that you have a full HD TV, I will confess due to my budget that to start with I had a HD ready set and I saw an upgrade from DVD but it is only with a full HD set can you truly appreciate this format which for me is the definitive format to enjoy cinema in your home.

I seriously think that due to the fact that you can play DVD's on Blu ray players that manufacturers should phase out the bog standard DVD players and only produce Blu ray players it would be the definitive way to make sure that people convert when they need a new player and you can pick up a new BR player so cheap, I just bought a multi region full ABC free LG player on Ebay for £75, a player without the upgrade can be purchased for as cheap as £30 without too much shopping around, anyone who said they had a player and then said they went back to their DVD as they didn't see the point clearly need an education in the format.

dvds play on blu ray players because they upscale them. Its not enough to hd quality, but they supposed to make your dvd better quality. The only way you can experience the best of blu ray is to get a new film. Casino Royale is amazing on blu ray. its crisp, and i cannot even see any grain on my tv. its stunning. I have a LD LED 37".

Some blu rays might look poor, But thats because they was transfered poor. So that might be why some say they cannot tell any difference. They are many blu ray films out there with a bad transfer. I cannot stand dvds anymore. The grain is unbarable. Its like watching a dodgy pirate copy or something. I am just used to blu ray, thats why.

It's not grain that makes a bad blu-ray, the best blu-rays maintain the original grain structure. The problem with DVDs is the poor resolution and colour reproduction.

Also grain on blu ray's is not such a bad thing, on older films it gives them a more authentic feel, I couldn't believe the amount of criticism that the Godfather Blu rays got when they were released because some utter morons were disappointed they weren't seeing Transformers like clarity.

Blu ray has been wrongly interpreted by so many, as seasoned film makers have said it has allowed them to go back and restore a film to look as good or better then it was on the original release, check out the comparisons for Raiders here and tell me the format isn't worth it, if you truly appreciate cinema DVD just don't cut it anymore.

I know, but what i mean is. if you get a newish film , theres hardly any grain to be seen on them. Like with Casino Royale, because it was made for blu ray. but if you go to the dvd version, you see loads of grain.

If you get what i mean.

It wasn't "made" for blu ray, it was shot on 35mm film like the vast majority of films from the last 90 years. The reason modern films like Casino Royale look so good is that their film prints are so fresh that they haven't had time to deteriorate like old film prints, meaning the digital scan is pristine. A digital scan is made immediately after filming for post production, so there's no damage done to the print. Older films have had to go through years of wear and tear before going digital.

Yes, but what im saying is, newer films look better on bluray than dvd, even with new films. you can see loads of grain even on a new dvd. But yes, you are correct about the 35mm film .

  • On another note: does anybody know if there is ever going to be a European release of Never Say Never Again? Because I was looking up some comparisons and the US BluRay looks a lot better than the DVD

Am I the only one to ask why would someone go into a shop and do that? Its an empty box that you havent even bought.

I can understand if it was the actual Holy Grail - but this lacklustre box set is a long way from that.

Ouch! Haha! I too saw the dummy box in HMV, much smaller than I thought, so thankfully, it won't be cluttering my other Blu's too much! I just got the confirmation from HMV today too, which is odd considering the last three online purchases they completely screwed up and didn't recieve my items until months later. That place has gone way downhill, so nice to know I may actually get it on time this time round!

Theyve been on the brink of going under for years havent they?

What with music downloads and likes of Amazon who is going to pay over £10 for a CD or DVD these days?

Yeah, the only reason Im buying from them is for some odd reason, my account seems to knock 10% off everything I buy online, I have no idea why, as I'm not a student or anything, so I'm getting the set for a cool £81! But I once bought the Persuaders! Blu-ray box set from them, which arrived a month late, and the Sherlock tv soundtrack and Captain America Blu Ray didn't arrive at all, so I had to cancel! I would be sad to see HMV go, as its been a big part of my 'shopping life', but they really are absolutely useless!

That's why I'm not sure how places in the States here like FYE are still afloat. I refuse to spend $35 on a blu-ray I can pick up online for $15-$20 with shipping. Even Barnes & Noble that's barely close to me sells certain films, such as the amazing 'La Piel Que Habito (The Skin I Live In)' on blu-ray for $45. $45, that isn't a typo.

People complain about the Rockys due to the grain but with Predator blu they went too far , removing *all* the grain :/

Most of all I want obscure fu's like Enter Fat Dragon on blu but that also depends on the orig negative , it it's bad....well :/

Some transfers like Horror Express and Dracula PoD aren't the best though......

Grain is inherent in film, it is the structure of the medium, with out grain there would be no picture. How this is dealt with on transfer is what matters. DVDs may look grainier but this is due to the lower resolution of DVD, blu-ray tends to make the actual grain more noticeable because it is rendered better. If the grain is softened, despeckled or whatever you get a waxy looking picture. Give me grain but give me a good transfer too. I had Die Hards on DVD, awful transfers and I hope the blu-ray transfer is better, whereas Dire Another Day the DVD transfer is absolutely spot on, a great picture for DVD. I know its a newer film but look at Dr No blu-ray the image is absolutely fantastic. The film looks like it was shot in the last 5 years it is that good.
  • While its a nice Bluray set...I am slightly disappointed that its just not the 22 films in individual cases with original artwork covers. I think that would have been better. I already have all the films that have already been released on bluray and have had this set on order since January...I hate to double dip...(or triple dip...quadruple did if you count VHS-DVD-ULTIMATE DVD...etc!!!) but I don't think I can wait around for individual releases to become available......also...I dont usually buy bluray discs until I have read a review on bluray.com or dvdbeaver.com or highdefdigest.com but if the remaining films look anything as great as the previous releases there shouldn't be any worries...So looking forward to watching OHMSS projected in HD...!

The problem with dvd and cd had the same issue. That when both were new formats some studio rushed to get discs out to capitilise. In quite a few cases the quality of the product put out was sub standard. For cd Led Zep's first issues were shocking and not even mastered from the orginal source.

The same has happened and is still happening, check out the uk issue of The Game, it is very poor but compare to the soon released Criterion version and the difference is night.& day.

Poor transfers will do the format no favours and like some have already said grain will be more noticable due to the process, some studios will remove this and create an unatural picture. Yes the likes of more modern films won't have this but I want Jaws, frwl and raider with their grain, blu does not make everything look grainless and it is a common misconception of the format.

They are released individually as well, with original artwork covers. Don't need to buy the box.

I have bought a load of Amaray cases and printed all 22 designs incorporating the original cinema artwork as sleeves - including 50th anniversary bonus disc sleeve...this way I can save the box set nice and clean and transfer the discs into an individual title blu ray display...they look superb if I do say so myself...
    :D

Just one thing, How can I upload a photo to show you how they look? never uploaded a pic before. I tried from my phone but it wont let me :-(
  • Oh I get you now. Bad mistake of mine :P

    Go check!

I did -- no joy here. Maybe, the shots were taken of a Swiss box. Judging from a review on the German Amazon site, the box is already available there. Strange . . .

Whatever: I was recently having second thoughts regarding the box anyway. I would like to quote this:
I already have all the films that have already been released on bluray and have had this set on order since January...I hate to double dip...(or triple dip...quadruple did if you count VHS-DVD-ULTIMATE DVD...etc!!!) but I don't think I can wait around for individual releases to become available......

    . . . and also that:

Well, the British Amazon has a great price, a real bargain -- and that is, why I, too, had originally ordered the box on their site back in January. Basically, no severe financial loss would be made due to unvoluntarily buying redundant discs with that box. However, I realized that from the yet-unreleased nine films, I only wanted five or six (and really disliked three) . . .

I tell You what: Silly as it may seem, I canceled my order. I settled with instead buying the Brosnan box from France, as I really look foreward to "Goldeneye" and "Tomorrow never dies" on Blu-ray -- and want to have some Blu-ray excitement NOW, even if it is not with the Bond 50 box . . !

    ;)

Later, I will add "The spy who loved me" and other titles to my collection and be done with it. That's the plan for me. I end up with only two redundant discs and do not have to throw away the treasured Bond blu-rays I already own.

Really?...Where? I have not seen any individual releases available to buy...Even buying the discs that I don't already have would cost more than the box set so that is why I am just going to get the box set. I could wait around and wait for the individual price to drop (there was a time when the current blurays cost €5 each brand new here in France)...and get the ones I need 1 at a time. (A Bond Fan needs to have them all - even the not great ones!)

They fixed the colours on YOLT too. Shame they didn't give so much attention to the Moore or Dalton films, but it probably wasn't cost effective to give them all the 4k treatment. The OHMSS PTS doesn't look as blue anymore either.

Some big upgrades, judging largely from OHMSS, DAF, TND, and GE. The others are in the sun so it is harder to spot the difference without the shadows. These seem to be high quality work.

  • I love it when older films get the quality treatment they deserve. Some of the best lookin blurays I have are films that were made in the 60's / 70's...It drives me mad when I read or hear people say...but a film from the 1960's wasn't made in HD!!! ...

Films in the 50s and 60s generally used more expensive, higher quality film than in the 70s and 80s, so they normally turn out looking better on blu-ray.

The quality really looks phenomenal. I cannot wait for as many of these to ship as I can purchase from Wal-Mart in October.
