Bond stopped being a spy in 1953:

"But now he would attack the arm that held the whip and the gun. The business of espionage could be left to the white-collar boys. They could spy, and catch the spies. He would go after the threat behind the spies, the threat that made them spy."

    Casino Royale
I love that paragraph on the last page of the novel!

According to The List, Daniel Craig has expressed a desire for Monica Bellucci to reprise her role as Lucia Sciarra, for his upcoming and final appearance as James Bond.

If true that suggests the script is still in an elementary stage.

No issues with that but I‘d rather want to see Camille return.

Instead of Madeleine, I'd rather Bond be with Lucia.

I don't have an issue with Bond being labelled an assassin, because he is. But he's not just an assassin. I think the issue is when he's made out to be just an assassin and nothing more, like in SP when he says "I kill people" for his job description. I mean yeah, he does, but that's not all he does. He's more than just a killing machine.
This is the key point in my view.

The original rumour came from that "shatterhand" nonsense, so I wouldn't look into it.

If true? And it does happen? Do you really believe their will be no Blofeld at all?

I still think Waltz will be in it to be honest.

My understanding of the definition of a spy is someone who secretly extracts information from an otherwise closed source. The only instance that applies to Bond in the novels is the beginning of YOLT, correct me if I´m mistaken.
Bond is an investigator, a detective. His license to kill makes him more dangerous to opponents, but I don´t recall any mention in the novels beside Bond´s first two kills (which could easily qualify as a means to evaluate him regarding suitability for the 00 section) where Bond is directly ordered to kill someone.

I'd define spy more as "obtaining information that one couldn't receive as one self, for a different cause" or simply being professionally disingenuous for an opposite motive. If you think of it that way Bond is definitely a spy. Casino Royale instantly fits that description.

Bond was very much a spy in MR as well,at Drax's chateaux.

    Unfortunately it got Corinne murdered.

The first half of it is excellent and very serious...it then just goes off the rails a bit.

I agree that MR is near perfection at what it does and what it wants to be. Tonally it's spot on. I was reminded of it recently when I viewed Thor Ragnarok. The same light playfulness pervades that Marvel entry too, and everyone just seemed to be having a similar blast making it.

If we cut the Jaws/Dolly romance and neutralize the henchman's comedic behaviour, and tone down the humour at the Venetian bits, the film will be granted access to perfection, in my opinion.

If Le Carré really thought Bond had the aspects of a "gangster", then the man is indeed delusional.

    A Scooby gangster, then?

MR feels like an underrated classic compared to much of what we've had since 1989. Gilbert knew what he was doing alright. It does all get a bit silly but the space stuff is actually quite beautifully designed and shot.

Got to see a 35 mm print of MR on the big screen a few years ago as part of a Bond marathon. In the cinema with an audience, it really does work. MR is a lot of fun.

I bet the boat chase right before Bond arrives at Drax's/the space finale look stunning in theaters.

Besides the pts, and the clock tower fight, the best sequence in the film.

I just can't get into MR. It's a real epic for sure and has some brilliant scenes but it just feels like a bit of a slog to get through to me because I find it so by the numbers. One of the only Bond films that I actually find boring.

    ?????

Its sheer entertainment. The film of the series where you really can see every penny up on the screen. A joyous romp.

Now, that, my friend, is an oddity. :))

MR is many things, but boring is certainly not one of them.
