Unless I’m mistaken, Luke Evans is gay, which would prove an interesting dynamic for the press to navigate.

Ok. I'm not sure being gay or straight is a qualication for playing a fictional role. At least not any more and not for the majority of modern cinema goers in the 21st century. Straight actors play gay parts and vice versa. Is it really an issue? Whoever thinks and says it is is in the wrong century. Prejudice ain't in fashion any more. This is 2018 not 1918.

I couldn’t give two tits, but when you say ‘Is it really an issue?’, of course it is. The press will tie itself in knots, sad as that may be.

well if he were the first gay actor to play Bond then it might be news for a week or two like it was with James Blond and then it would be all about his acting.

frankly until these 'boundaries are broken it always seems like a big deal until the week after and then it's 'what was that absurd fuss about'?

how many of the Hollywood legends of yesteryear were gay or at the very least bisexuals? it didn't stop millions of women (and men of course) swooning over them.

Cary Grant and Clark Gable to name just two.

I understand why some actors still choose to remain in the closet but it is a pretty sad situation that they feel they need to.

I think Bond being played by a gay actor should be something fans just take in their stride. it's 2018 - Bond and the fans can deal with it. the fact is we've been watching gay actor's play straight characters since the dawn of acting so pretending anything else is the case is just kidding ourselves.

    .

I agree with your comments 100%. Also, pretend it was revealled that Roger Moore or Daniel Craig had once been in a gay relationship. Would that change the way you feel about the actor? Would it make you not want to watch Casino Royale or Spy Who Loved Me ever again? No. Of course not. Fans are more interested in what happens on screen not what happens in an actors private life.

The point isn’t so much what the fans think, but how the media play the story. Of course, nobody here thinks it’s even worthy of discussion, it’s ‘acting’ after all, but bear in mind we live in climate of identity politics where acting isn’t just acting anymore.

Precisely. I'm unconcerned about what someone gets up to beneath the sheets, but I don't want any further distractions than is necessary. We've endured quite enough over the past few years imho. Furthermore, this discussion is moot because Evans is already 40 or thereabouts.

    CashleyPersia update:

Supposedly, the big roles in the script are the female villain and Bond's understudy (another female role). I hear Sophie Rundle, Lily James, Ella Purnell and Antonia Thomas have auditioned/met with Boyle (though this list is not exhaustive). The role is not a "love interest" however is the co-lead of the film. I've also heard that Boyle isn't adverse to discovering a new name and possibly someone who isn't an actress. Though it sounds like a moronic suggestion, I've heard the singer Dua Lipa is high on the list.
Finally, the main villain has been written with Angelina Jolie in mind. I've heard this name for a very long while. I never quite trusted it but Boyle has wanted her since day 1 and it looks as though she's keen. They are now actively courting her and the script is being adjusted accordingly.
I've heard that the film is very British-based and the tone will be lighter than the last few movies. However, it is written as Craig's final Bond film and I hear Logan being used as a comparison often still....

Sad to say that none of those ideas or suggestions excites me, but I do like Sophie Rundle and am all for a lighter tone.

    Thanks for the update.

None of this interests me at present either, especially the thought of Jolie of all people. There are better choices imho. RE: A lighter tone - I just wish they would leave that for the next actor. I'd rather Craig be a bad 'a' which is more suitable for his iteration.

Oh well, I hope they just get on with it and deliver this film on time so we can move on.

That's pretty much where I'm at currently and have been for some time: I want the movie to be good, but either way, I'm ready for a new era.

Jolie has already starred with Craig in Tomb Raider, so this is not outside the realm of possibilities.

As an aside, if I'm not mistaken, Ella Purnell was recently linked to the ex- Mr. Jolie (Brad Pitt).

"Co-lead" and "very British-based" meaning that Craig will have less screen time, and his child will be born/raised in the UK?

The last actress I ever wanted to see in a Bond film is bloody Jolie. Bond 25 : Tomb Raider 2.0. I didn't even think they were that good together in it either.

The whole "understudy" story line is really turning me off Bond 25 altogether if true. It would have made more sense for that story line to occur in SF when Bond was injured, not now.

I have been dreaming about a Bond movie with a female understudy + a female main villain for ages! These rumours are really exciting! Not a huge fan of Jolie, but she is a decent actress.

It's all your fault @PanchitoPistoles!! You willed it so.

I hope you can please have dreams about Nolan reinventing Bond successfully for B26, preferably in 2021.

    It's happening. With
    Harry Styles
    as Bond.

If that’s the film they are going for with no “love interest” or holding Logan as the template, my excitement is further plunged. Seems to me with this “co-lead” they’re just going down the route of Mad Max: Fury Road where the story is about the women rather than Max, and here we have the story centering on the “co-lead” protege rather than Bond.

Whenever I see 'co-lead' I'm reminded uncomfortably of DAD. I can't wait for the 'double trouble' equal billing poster.

While I don´t feel particularly excited (it sounds a bit like the MP-Bond relationship at the beginning of SF, just for a whole movie), I think lighter tone doesn´t have to mean that Craig attempts some Rogering again. The film can be light of tone even with Craig being fierce, in fact I could imagine that a pretty attractive combination.

I’m starting to get really worried and it might end up being another Skyfall situation/entry for me. Well, if that’s it, count me out.

It could work, although I'm not hopeful. It will all come down to the writing, which has to be top notch.

I have a feeling they will try to incorporate elements from MI:RN. That wasn't a protege/mentor relationship, but the film had a light touch and a bit of playful rivalry which I wouldn't be surprised if they emulate.

Sigh: I was just thinking earlier today that with Boyle's colourful approach perhaps we would be in store for another eccentric and stylish film like LALD. Something flamboyant and zany, which would have been perfect to introduce someone new. Pity.

I hope these rumours are false. Don't like the understudy idea at all. Wouldn't mind a female villain, but Jolie? We have already discussed plenty of good female actresses as good villain candidates. All of them better options.

No matter what happens from now on, with Hodge writing and Boyle directing, a lot of fans will HATE Bond 25. Mark my words, this will be the least tradational Bond movie yet.
  • edited May 2018 Posts: 6,601
Jolie is a terrible idea, she somehow looks less and less lkle a normal human being.

But what exactly means understudy in this context.

And lighter? Still lighter? Sp was very light already in the vain of the Moore and Brosman films.

I really, really wonder why - if some people are so dissatisfied with the concept of bond movies in itself - they don’t go and look for another franchise ( or better yet invent their own ).
This all sounds so terrible and wanabe inventive and, and ... fill in whatever expressions for disappointment you know

As many others too, I´m rather appalled by the appearance of the term co-lead. Top notch writing required indeed.

All we can hope for at present perhaps is that some 'insider' is feeding b/s to Cashley, knowing he will keep the gossip mills churning & Bond in the media.
